San Diego 4, Philadelphia 3, Brett Myers 2 (IQ)

Brett Myers…punching the developmental delay switch.

After the game, Myers got into a shouting match with a reporter and had to be restrained by teammate Pat Burrell.

When Myers was asked about the two home runs, he said they were really “just pop ups.”

A reporter from the Philadelphia Inquirer questioned whether Myers really thought they were pop ups, and Myers got angry.

“You’re not even a beat reporter, you’re a fill-in, you don’t know anything about baseball,” said Myers, who then called the reporter “retarded.”

The Inquirer reporter asked if Myers could spell retarded, and Myers stood up. Burrell then restrained Myers, and Myers refused to speak any further.

The Inquirer reporter asked if Myers could spell retarded, and Myers stood up.

That's actually a pretty good line.

I thought Brett only picked fights with girls.

When I first heard about this, I assumed the reporter replied, "I'm retarded? Isn't retarded beating your wife in the middle of a busy Boston sidewalk?"
   4. jamcadbury Posted: August 26, 2007 at 06:34 AM (#2499912)
And so it begins.

Also entertaining from this story:

"I'm just having fun," Bradley said. "They're telling me I'm no good, I'm telling them I am that good. It feels good to come through and help this team win. I'm not trying to entice the crowd."

Did he say "entice" or did the reporter blow the quote?

Only 15 pitchers have won fewer games than Brett Myers and given up more "pop ups."

Brett Myers is a piece of ####, and I thought that long before the wife-beating incident.
   8. Justin 'The Cespedobear' T Posted: August 26, 2007 at 07:16 AM (#2499918)
It's a good line if the reporter asked of Myers, "Can you spell it?" Then after Myers spelled retarded, he said "No, it is spelled I-T, dummy."
   9. Hang down your head, Tom Foley Posted: August 26, 2007 at 07:19 AM (#2499919)
I bet "retarted" is in Brett's Google history now.
   10. Matt Waters Posted: August 26, 2007 at 07:24 AM (#2499921)
Oh man, that reporter is so lucky he isn't a girl. Myers would have kicked his ass.

Milton Bradley is absolutely destroying everything in his path right now. 1.139 OPS as a Padre.

Yeah, well Kotsay's hit .184/.248/.243 since Bradley got DFAed, so it's not like the A's have missed him.

I'm sure the A's are pretty happy with Andrew Brown... but why the #### did they have to trade Bradley to the Padres? ####

Ah, Rob Base is back...

Russlan, I agreed with you at the time that the Mets should have gone after Bradley. But that ship has sailed now. You've got to get over it.

Instead we need to focus on getting Flores back from the Expos.

I don't know if it will ever reach "Operation Shutdown" levels of fame, but "The Inquirer reporter asked if Myers could spell retarded" is such a good line it might live on a while, especially using the following formula:

"The Inquirer reporter asked if (insert player being irritating/evil/stupid here) could spell (insert easily spelled word that is somehow connected)

as in:

"The Inquirer reporter asked if Truby could spell Satan-worship"

Depodesta asked Plaschke if he could statistically prove a high level of correlation between the use of a pocket protector and poor on-field performance.

I hate it when players like Brett Myers and Albert Belle can't spell "retarded"

If Michael Barrett even on the Padres any more? He hasn't played in over two weeks. Either he's injured, cut, or played his way into a third string role behind Josh Bard and Pete LaForest.

Since the trade:
Barrett: 231/238/288
Bowen: 185/286/315

Not only has Barrett been outhit by Jason Kendall, but he's been outhit by Rob Bowen
   21. Mister High Standards Posted: August 26, 2007 at 03:53 PM (#2499992)
Cubs fans are definitly overly concerned with Michael Barrett.
   22. Howie Menckel Posted: August 26, 2007 at 03:54 PM (#2499993)
Barrett is on the DL with a concussion, might be back in early Sept.

Man, this thread + the Papelbon pitching thread down in Threapy has provided some of the best Comedy in Primer this summer.

Did he say "entice" or did the reporter blow the quote?

I'm goign to assume he can spell the word, but does Myers actually know the definition?
   24. Hello Rusty Kuntz, Goodbye Rusty Cars Posted: August 26, 2007 at 03:57 PM (#2499996)
Blogger Curt Schilling asked pitcher Curt Schilling if he could spell "bacon."

You’re not even a beat reporter

I love how he sticks the word "even" in there. Beat reporters everywhere will no doubt dig it.

Actually Matt, it's mostly just me, not all Cubs fans.

Cubs fans are definitly overly concerned with Michael Barrett.

Not this one. I'm just glad he's no longer a Cubs. Now, if you're saying I was concerned with him when he was still in Chicago, you might have a point. And I was, IMNSHO, completely justified.
   28. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2007 at 12:50 PM (#2500698)
Not only has Barrett been outhit by Jason Kendall, but he's been outhit by Rob Bowen.

That's pretty funny, especially considering that Bowen's continued to hit about as well with the A's as he did with the Cubs.
