SB Nation: Horsehide fiend: The best (and worst) platoons in baseball

Derek Norris + John Jaso = Jorek Norso

Combined numbers: .283/.382/.465, 12 HR, 45 RBI, .374 wOBA, 142 wRC+, 2.6 fWAR

Only the Brewers’ Jonathan Lucroy has been more valuable than the A’s catching combination of Norris and Jaso—and every team carries a backup catcher, right? Pretty effective. The A’s mix Jaso in at designated hitter occasionally as well, but in games where one of these two has started behind the plate, Oakland has had the best catcher in the American League this season.

It also doesn’t hurt that, when combined, “Norso” looks and sounds like a Tolkien character. The Scherzer eyes really drive home the Middle Earth motif.

So true.

The Norris/Jaso combo looks like Joba Chamberlain.

or reynolds/overbay. it doesn't look pretty at first glance but they are better than the average bear

Not exactly sure how they decided the cut-off points (there are 3 "best" combos listed, but 6 "worst"), but they seem to be ranking by fWAR. Scoockie Genneeks is at 2.1 which would be just behind Chreth Sminorfia at 2.2. Markyle Reynoverbay is only at 0.8 due to Overbay's negative contribution.

usually love the charts but given that last season the brewers had the equivalent of a drugged walrus playing first base defense cannot be ignored

so while not thrilled with the first base platoon it is not a train wreck to me

Yikes! It's hard to imagine someone being 3.2 wins below replacement at 1B. Does Mike Jacobs not wear a glove or something?

And Price Fielder is, apparently, a terrible, terrible, defensive player.

Slow as hell. Even though he can cover 1B and 2B and still keep his foot on the bag...by the time he figures out where the ball that just bounced off his head is, the runner will be safe.

Well, Claymation can be tricky, one second he's there and 2 frames later he's got his fist around you. Regardless, him trying top pick up the ball would be like trying to pick up a flea.

Wow, yeah, he dominates that list. One of the more ironic names in baseball. At least he's not King.

I was a little surprised to see Rico Brogna up there. I thought he had a reputation as a good fielder. (But I see his seasonal dWARs are consistently negative.) Mark Grace, too -- four-time Gold Glove winner but he has a season over (under) -2 dWAR. Whoa! J.T. Snow too?
   23. Cooper Nielson Posted: June 22, 2014 at 12:37 AM (#4732574)
So, J.T. Snow's -2 dWAR season was 1995, the year he won the first of 6 consecutive Gold Gloves. In every single one of those years he had a negative dWAR.

Obviously Snow had a good defensive reputation, and I remember him at least looking like a really good defensive player. So I'm wondering;

1. Was Snow's defense ridiculously overrated? (If so, why? What did the stats reveal that our eyes missed?)

or

2. Are there some built-in problems with dWAR's evaluations at 1B? Most of the guys on bobm's list are famous for being awful. But a few of them are not. I suppose it could just be an off-year here and there.

It's nearly impossible for a first baseman to post a positive dWar. You have to look are rField to rate a player. dWar is about one of the most useless stats you will ever see. (for the record, Keith Hernandez was .6 dWar over his career, but was 117 rField over his career.)

Having said that, JT Snow gold glove years rField was
-13
-2
-4
2
2
-4
so it was probably overrated.

When comparing players at the same position, dWAR and Rfield are essentially identical. The only difference is variation in the positional adjustments across eras. For the expansion era, these tend to be pretty small. In the early-mid 70s, George Scott got whacked to the tune of 8-9 runs per seasoon; in the early-mid 90s, Palmeiro got whacked at -9; in the 2010s, Fielder gets whacked at -10.

When comparing players across positions, you have to incorporate positional differences.

The Iannetta/Conger platoon is pretty effective -- .258/.355/.423, sOPS+ of 123, 2.1 WAR.
