SCHILLING RIPS NEW YORK FANS—AGAIN (RR)

Rarer than a Oswald Higginbottom radio appearance…it’s Curt Schilling!

On his radio appearance today, the injured Red Sox pitcher blasted New York fans for their joy over Brady’s impending knee surgery.

“The euphoria in New York is palpable,” Schilling said. “The Yankees suck this year and they are bitter and mad and making excuses over that. Now they got Tom going down so New York’s excited. It’s unfortunate, but when you crawl to the top of the pile you will have people trying to knock you down.”

...After blasting New York fans for being enthused over Brady’s injury, Schilling took the time to remind fans that he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks when they beat the Yankees in the 2001 World Series.

“I was front row and center when their ‘dynasty’ ended,” Schilling said.

Schilling then praised the fans of Boston, who have long been known for respecting the Yankees and rooting for nothing but good health for their stars.

“They want us to be as bitter and mad as they are,” Schilling said. “Unfortunately, it’s not going to happen.”

Boston fans have never shown bitterness? Is Schilling delusional or stupid?
   2. Big Train Posted: September 09, 2008 at 08:07 PM (#2934255)
why would Giants fans be happy Tom Brady got hurt? Patriots were just one of the four the Giant mandhandled on the way to victory.

As for Jets fans, I can't speak for them, but as soon as they learn to turn on their computers, they will speak up.

where does he say this?

And it's not surprising, then, that they get bitter; they cling to guns or Jeter as a way to explain their frustrations.

Hahaha! Not sure if this was a sarcastic sentence written by the writer or if this was what Schilling actually said. It's hilarious nonetheless. I guess if Curt knew that the majority of the Jets fans are also Mets fans who probably were cheering the second loudest when the 2004 ALCS was over, he'd probably think twice before opening his mouth.
   7. robinred Posted: September 09, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2934274)
I think this means Schilling is going to try to unseat Remy as President of Red Sox Nation. It was a campaign speech.

Schilling was publicly supporting McCain even when people were writing McCain off, so what I am waiting for is a link to a story in which Schilling slams Obama. That could be a jumping-off point for a new post record.

I'm not under the impression that most Mets fans can read, so it shouldn't really be a problem.

I seem to remember Schilling vacillating during primary season between the two of them (and this was well before it was at all clear either would be the eventual nominee.) So he is probably well-disposed towards both.

Then again, maybe it's changed, he was born in Alaska...

The Giants beat the hell out of Brady, and eeked out a win. They caught some breaks, so what?
The only chance they had to win was to get consistent pressure on Brady, and get lucky here and there.
Give 'em credit--nobody else was able to put Brady on his as$ with regularity all year long except the
Giants.

Yep. In short, they've been shooting fish in a barrel ever since the 20's, all the while

To manhandle another team, you have to win by a margin greater than having to pull a lucky play out of your ass with 2 minutes left. OK?

You can't possibly disagree with the fact that for that one game, the Giants D outplayed Pat's O line, can you?
   33. Big Train Posted: September 09, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2934327)
SJ, I'll say this one time and one time only. To manhandle another team, you have to win by a margin greater than having to pull a lucky play out of your ass with 2 minutes left. OK?

The Giant offense, of course, did not manhandle the Patriot defense, they moved the ball well at times, they got a little unlucky in the first half, a little lucky in the second half.

The manhandling was all done on the other side of the ball, it was extermely impressive. The O Line was frequently confused by the Giants blitzing. Twice Mitchell came in untouched. Even when they tried screens Tuck, Alford and the rest of the D line would sniff them out. Antonio Pierce beat two patriots OL and stopped Faulk (or Maroney, can't remember) short of a first down on a big third down in the second quarter.

They were handled.

I'm similar, although I liked the old Steve Grogan era Pats better. Red unis, Sam Bam Cunningham, Steve Nelson, Russ Francis, Hog Hannah, et al. I still don't like the way they used Hartford as a bargaining chip, so my enthusiasm for them has dampened somewhat. I *am* somewhat fascinated by their organization and this year, I am Sammy Morris's #1 fan. And Stephen Gostkoski's.

   36. Gonfalon Bubble Posted: September 09, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2934334)
Kevin, I'll say this one time and one time only. To manhandle another team, you have to win by a margin greater than having to pull a throwing error and a broken bat single out of your ass with 2 outs left. OK?
   37. tfbg9 Posted: September 09, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2934336)
Didn't the original Pats head coach nearly get accidentally electrocuted at the team's first presser, something like that?

Your point is valid up until the last sentence - that was an evenly matched game - equal time of possession, Giants had a few more total yards, Pats had a few more first downs, both teams were 50/50 on 3rd downs - the Pats even had three sacks of their own.

You can't say the Giants were the better team that day, nor can you say the Patriots we're demonstrably better - it was too close to call. The Giants caught the breaks (2 fumbles but neither lost, the helmet catch, the missed Samuel intercenption on te last drive that bounced off his chest). The team that wins an evenly matched game is the one that catches the breaks. Both teams played well enough to win, and the Giants were the lucky ones.

/I'm a Dolphins fan, FYI.

No, in Football a blowout win means a blowout win

"manhandle" means one team physically pushed another around- which is what the Giants did to the Patriots...

being a Jets fan I was kind of torn, but decided that Belichoke was far more evil than the Jints so decided to enjoy it.

Yep, just checked the boxscore, it's not quite how I remember the game, my impression was that the Giants were physically manhandling the Patriots- they just weren't getting points on the board.
However NE had 69 plays to the Giants 63- the Giants averaged 1.4 more yards per play- and those extra yards were pretty evenly distributed - the Giants had a 6.7 to 4.3 yard edge per passing play, and a 3.5 to 2.8 yard edge per running play. (which works out to a 1.4 yard edge overall since the {Patriots had many more passing plays than the Jints, whereas the Jints had more running plays)

many times an "even" game is a back and forth game- this really wasn't a back and forth game, the Giants had a definite edge and applied the pressure throughout.

yeah the metaphor FRONT ROW AND CENTER really implies active participation, it cant be implying FRONT ROW AND CENTER like a spectator, like watching from the front row of the dugout. jesus. and he's selling himself short the way he pitched that series.

edit: ok, i see how it could be a mixing of 2 metaphors: "Front Row" (spectator) and "Front and Center" (participant)

My purpose was not to question the seating arrangements, but to tweak Schilling's forgotten near-failure. But if I know my playoff broadcasts, I'm sure the people who were REALLY "front and center" at the game were the primary cast of the new laugh-out-loud hit comedy "Greg the Bunny," 9 o'clock Tuesdays, 8 Central, only on Fox.

Am I missing something? Curt Schilling was co-WS MVP with Randy Johnson in 2001. He pitched brilliantly in that series.

He gave up the homer to Soriano to give the Yankees the lead, which is what he is speaking of. Schilling did pitch well in that series, but the Diamondbacks were a throwing error away from losing 2 of the 3 games he started.

The myth that will never die. In a few years Eli will have lobbed the ball underhand to Samuel, like you do with a toddler.

And he still would have had to come down in bounds. It was a tough play.

Unusual for a Superbowl... A lot of the games suck as games, I think the teams get too pumped up, and when things break one way or the other usually the team on the short end will implode and play like complete crap from then on.
   57. Big Train Posted: September 09, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2934386)
I think, for the most part, the superbowls sucked because the NFC was a beast in the 80s/90s, and the AFC was king in the 70s.

Since the Green Bay/New England super bowl (that was really closer than the score indicatied) there have only been a couple of terrible games.

What the #### is it with this site? You all are talking about the comments about a football game made by a baseball player who hasn't pitched a single inning this year, uttered on a reprehensible, #### stirring sportstalk radio program.

Who the #### cares?

To everybody who hates Curt Schilling:

We get it. He is a blowhard Republican. You made your point clear on every other thread over the last six months that he HAS NOT BEEN PLAYING BASEBALL.

To everybody who has some political beef with another poster:

We get it. You strongly disagree to the point of intense dislike. You made your point clear in every other post that evolves/degenerates into some political debate.

I realize the thread turned away from my gross characterization (there were some funny posts), but the point stands. Regardless of what he says, Curt ####### Schilling is not news in September of 2008. Who the #### cares about the SB XLII in the middle of some interesting playoff races?

Late to the party, but I didn't recall that AS "missed interception" at all until mentioned here. Respecting the posters here, I had assumed it was something that slipped my mind - that goodness for that YouTube clip.

Getting past the fact that it wasn't thrown into his chest, I think that even if he did make the catch, which would have been a great play, it's no lock that he comes down inbounds.

The INT Eli threw was more of a lucky break for the Pats than the missed INT by Samuel.

Nothing like over-the-top bigotry (73, 79) to make kevin's machine-gun style of commentary look sympathetic. Cheers all around.

Over the top bigotry? Over the top? C'mon. Bit hyperbolic, no?
How about middle of the pack stupidity?

Is it bigotry? If we were on a women's tennis board, Ryan could have easily substituted Serena Williams and Ana Ivanovic for Brady and Schilling and those posts would be essentailly the same. This thread just happens to be about male sports.

I thought it was rather anti-gay. And doesn't that make it bigotry?

Not that kevin throwing around schizophrenia is much better.

It was meant to be insulting. It's only insulting based on the notion that wanting to have sex with a man is ipso facto a bad thing - the use of such graphic language was meant to heighten the effect.

Do you really think that Ryan would have made an equivalent post about the Williams sisters to an equivalent effect?

Holy crap. My girlfriend is a bigot!

On the contrary, I think we'd all agree that she's not the least bit discriminating.

Nah. Too stupid.

Yeah, that's weird. I like Gonfalon Bubble. He makes me laugh. I wonder why kevin doesn't care for him. I'm sure there's some backstory in one of those megathreads that I blew off.

B-O-N-D-S is my guess.

Is GB a Giants fan? My dossiers need updating.

I see the way that the non-funny joke in these types of cracks actually break down as this:

You're such a total fanboy for male individual A that you'd even "hold your nose", so to speak,
and perform a sex act on A, even though you'd never perform such an act under any other circumstances,
not being ordinarily attracted to other men. See, that's how little perspective on the matter the
object of my clever ridicule is! Ha ha ha! Get it?

Thanks, maybe you can be my new imaginary friend.

I'm sure there's some backstory in one of those megathreads that I blew off.

Post #103 nails it. More recently, I was teasing the guy about fleeing a Game Chatter as the Red Sox horrifically blew a 10-run lead, then returning 90 minutes later at *precisely* at the moment Boston tied it back up. I was also in the mob jeering at his "Manny is killing the Dodgers!" theory.

Mostly, though, it's the scientific fact that I'm a crazy insane idiot whose every post is a schizophrenic's incoherent cry for help. The good fight to squash our kind never ends.

Funny that kevin finds this "gay talk" offensive when a couple of minutes later he's enjoying "Piazza, Wood and two dongs" humor in the last posts of this thread. It's true that schizophrenia talk is much classier.
