Schmuck: Phony controversy over “An Evening with Brooks”

Or as flamethrowing Radhames Liz Smith always says…“Only in Baltimore kids, only in Baltimore…”

It’s a petty little tempest in a teapot, but I still have to respond to the post-Brooks-bash “controversy” over how many current Orioles showed up at last night’s event at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. There were 1,500 people there, including myself, and there were at least a dozen people who were definitely in attendance that I looked for and never saw, so I couldn’t say with certainty who was or wasn’t there.

Frankly, I think it’s terribly disrespectful to Brooks to shift the focus from his great night to some opportunistic Orioles axe-grinding. I didn’t see any current O’s there, but I didn’t see any current Ravens there either (doesn’t mean there weren’t any, just that I didn’t see one), and—if we’re going to get technical about this—doesn’t Brooks transcend baseball as one of the most important sports figures in the history of Baltimore?

...And one more thing, to compare this to the Elrod Hendricks funeral is just plain wrong. The criticism of the current Orioles roster at the time—which was represented at the memorial only by Melvin Mora—was legitimate, because Elrod was a major figure in the Orioles clubhouse and a friend to every one of those guys.

The “Evening with Brooks” was a trip down memory lane for all of the long-time Baltimore fans and sports figures, so I don’t know if you can expect the players who don’t have any personal or nostalgic link to Brooks to fly across country just to be seen.

I got to do a one-on-one interview with Brooks Robinson back in my sportswriting days. I spent about two hours talking nothing but baseball with him, including a lot of talk about the players active at the time. He couldn't have been a more gracious, more pleasant and genuinely enthusiastic about all things baseball. It was one of the highlights of my career as a know-nothing hack. The fact that he was my dad's favorite player during his time only made it more memorable.

That is all.

Back when she was a first-time teenaged bride, my 2nd wife's first landlord back in Little Rock was supposedly Brooks Robinson. Since the place was near the School for the Deaf, which I've seen Brooks mention in interviews, I tend to believe that account.

That is also all.

I don't have a Brooks Robinson story.

That is all as well.

Brooks Robinson once put a flaming bag of poo on my front porch, and when I tried to put it out, he flung racial epithets at me while drinking a can of Natural Light (still connected to the other five in a ring-sixer) on my front lawn.

That is all.

I once met Brooks Kieschnick.

That is all.

Like Brooks Robinson, I am commonly referred to by others as "The Human Vacuum Cleaner." However, it is not meant as a compliment.

That is all.

Years ago...Tom Tresh, who was once tagged out by Brooks Robinson, was making an appearance at a clothing store in my town. A small riot broke out and we Beatle-chased him to the roof.

That is all.

I used to have a Brooks Brothers shirt.

That is all.

There were several brooks running through the neighborhood where I used to live, but now I live in the desert.

That is all.

Brooks was here.

Sheepishly, that is all.

I used to have a Brooke Burke calendar.

That is all.

I used to know a guy back in Little Rock named Brooks who was neither the former 3B nor (afaik) a baseball fan, period. Since he would've been born in the early to mid-'60s, though, I suppose he could've been named for Robinson.

That is all.

Actually, if my non-poltergeist identity is any indication, it's entirely possible you were named after me, Szym. God only knows what got into your parents ...

Thus reminding me for the millionth time why it's silly to read the comments on internet newspaper articles.

I totally think those three players would net 25 more wins.

35, even.

I lived by a brook once.

That is all.

My mother's maiden name was Robinson.

That is all.

I'm real happy for ya Brooks, and imma let you finish, but Jackie was the greatest Robinson of all time. OF ALL TIME!

That is all.
