Schulman: Giants sign Renteria?

WFAN, a radio station in New York, is reporting the Giants have signed shortstop Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18 million deal. When I called the Giants to ask, they said not true, but I’m checking further.

I got off the phone five minutes ago with Paul Kinzer, the agent for Rafael Furcal, who said he and the Giants are still talking. In fact, they talked an hour ago, which seems to throw cold water on the notion that the Giants and Renteria have a deal.

So it goes in the Internet era. Kinzer had to spend the morning denying a report that the A’s have offered Furcal a four-year, $48 million deal and the Mets have offered Furcal a job at second base.

They're buying out his contract for $300K. Wow -- there's a big difference between Furcal and Renteria. I hope this isn't true.

If this is true, I think Dan may need to change his lede. Sabean has NOT done a good job..

Renteria's a few months younger than I am. It makes me feel old that the Giants are signing guys who were born after me.

I'm not sure that this one would tip the balance after the Nathan, Liriano and Bonser for Pierszynski trade. And the signings of Edgardo Alfonzo. And Neifi (which cost a first-round draft pick). And Michael Tucker (which cost another first-round draft pick). And Mike Matheny (which cost another first-round pick). And that Zito thing.

I think you need to read Dan's ZIPS projections first to get my point.

in who's favor? furcal had a pretty bad back injury last year, they have same career OPS+. okay, four years difference in age, but those back injuries are scary.

A radio station reports a signing that both parties deny and the internet gets blamed?

Wasn't Renteria's back hurt during his year in Boston?

And I thought Renteria had become a serious defensive liability, but that Furcal was still pretty good in the field. If that's right, then the four-year age difference and equal career OPS+ would mean there is, in fact, a big difference between the two players.

Only because Albert Belle had an airtight alibi.

wasn't aware renteria had been hurt, hadn't been following him that closely. carry on.

Yes, Renteria has been a defensive liability , though maybe not a "serious defensive liability", aside from the one disgusting season in Boston.

Can the return of Ray Durham be far behind?

So...

The Giants were unhappy with the 19 headed Emmavan Veldencock monster they employed up the middle when Omar wasn't sucking up at-bats?
