Scott Carroll earns win for White Sox in his MLB debut; Abreu adds 4 RBIs

Two great stories.  First, Scott Carroll makes good.  But second…holy cow, Jose Abreu is awesome.  Leading the bigs in HRs and RBIs, setting “rookie” records left and right, etc. His ABs are quickly becoming appointment viewing.

Yeah. Jose Abreu is clearly everything that he looked like he could be in the Cuban leagues. Dude can mash.

He signed for me and a bunch of other people when I saw him in Glendale. He's an easy fan favorite for the offense starved Sox. Something interesting is happening on the South Side, but I'm not exactly sure what. The pitching is in shambles, but the offense is far and away MLB's most potent through the first 15% or so of the year.

Abreu is must see TV right now, even if he struggles with off speed stuff on occasion his ability to hit with extreme power to all fields is clearly legit. He'll probably never be a 400 OBP monster like Frank Thomas, but a next 5 years of 280/350/560 is not at all out of the question. He's solid enough at 1B and appears healthy, so that's more than earning his contract.

Abreu's been a monster. He hit a game-winning grand slam that Hawk practically lost his mind calling.

The Sale injury sucks and Erik Johnson's complete ineffectiveness has been disappointing but overall a very pleasant start to the season.

I can't figure out a way to link from here, but Carroll had a great post-game interview. And this video now makes him my second-favorite pitcher on the club. Fastball!

2: the word on abreu was that he mashes offspeed stuff (smart, reactive hitter) but could struggle w plus velocity (iffy bat speed).

What has impressed me most about Abreu is his plate coverage. Seems like he can get to everything, then put it somewhere with a bit of juice on it (or a whole orchard).

Semien belongs, Alexei's been productive, even Dayan Viciedo appears to be waking up. If the pitching staff could find the plate once in awhile it could be a special season.

Abreu's been awesome with hardly a peep from the media. At least the Billy Hamilton buzz has come back to something more commensurate with his numbers. He has 9 SBs, which is great for someone with a .253 OBP, but he's been caught 4 times already.

You aren't kidding. I feel like I've got baseball on the TV every day and only after looking up the clip mentioned in post #3 did I realize Abreu is a righty.

He would have to show up to the ballpark 20 minutes late one afternoon for the media to utter a sound.

Once the media peeps, doesn't everybody get riled up that he's overhyped???

#2:

MV, how long has it been since we had some good, young mashers? ca. 2000 with The Kids Can Play? And give me Abreu, Semien, Eaton, and (sigh) Garcia over Maggs, Lee, and Konerko any day. Even though it's a mediocre team, it's a good time to be a White Sox fan in this humble horsemaster's opinion.

I remember a year or so ago thinking that this team had absolutely no one to build around besides Sale. I feel a lot better about the organization today.
