Scott recounts days in Negro Leagues with Black Yankees | mycentraljersey.com

Buck Leonard. Couldn’t get him out. He’d get up at four in the morning, before he washed his face, and hit two home runs,’’ Scott said with a raucous laugh. “I ain’t kiddin’ you, brother. You couldn’t get nothin’ by him. You couldn’t get nothin’ by him at all. He hit a couple off me and I don’t think they’ve stopped fallin’ yet. That man was rough.

“Satchel, by the time I would start my swing, the catcher would already be throwing the ball back. But hey, I wasn’t the only one he did that to.’‘

I wish I'd known about this event beforehand. Robert's a great guy. Met him in Cooperstown on induction weekend a few times. Last time, we talked not about baseball but about his excellent taste and wisdom in setting up his table right next to where they were selling the sausage sandwiches.

Hopefully he'll be in C-Town in July, as I'm thinking of heading up for induction Saturday (lotsa players roaming around) and driving home early on Sunday to catch the ceremony on TV. (That field at the Clark Sports Center is brutal, man. Any of you who were there the year of Dave Winfield's speech know exactly what I'm talking about.)
