I’ll give you black sensations up and down your spine “I’m not buying into it,” Hoffman said last night. “I feel good, and I feel stuff-wise that I’m as good as I’ve ever been.”
.. If the hitters are telling Hoffman anything, it is that they still haven’t figured him out after all of these years.
.. Opposing hitters are batting .215 with Hoffman on the mound
.. Hoffman’s 2.70 earned-run average is narrowly better than his career 2.71, and his 37 saves augur a ninth 40-save season.
.. Between April 28 and Aug. 5, Hoffman converted 25 straight save opportunities while compiling an 0.84 ERA.
.. Given Hoffman’s fanaticism about fitness, his financial incentives to keep pitching and his continued command of a paralyzing change-up, his record save total of 519 might easily reach 600 or 650.
.. By finishing 40 games this season, Hoffman triggered a clause in his contract that ensures a $7.5 million salary for 2008. Beyond that, who knows? Knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm saved 132 games after his 40th birthday; Dennis Eckersley 96. Nolan Ryan pitched his seventh no-hitter at age 44.
7.5 Million for the Greatest Closer EVER! and he is not close to being done!

1. catomi01 Posted: September 14, 2007 at 12:07 PM (#2523914)really? I would think having excellent command and one consistently nasty pitch that isn't a straight fastball would be exactly what you'd want your closer to be.
Ok - let's take him out of Petco. For the last three years his home ERA is 2.58, his road ERA 2.99 (Weathers hasn't had an ERA this low since 2002, and his career era is well over a run higher). His sOPS+ split for each of the last 3 years:
2005 Home - 75, Away 51
2006 Home - 54, Away 41
2007 Home - 41, Away 79
Hoffman's numbers are better at home this year than on the road for the first time in a few years, but he does only have 19 IP away from Petco for the season.
I mean,
You've got probably the 2nd best closer ever, who just happens to have the misfortune to be playing at the same time as the best closer ever. Plus he's got the save record.
How often do you get YOUR hometown guy THAT close to all time best status?
In the same way, if a Brave fan in the 70s were to say Aaron was the best power hitter ever, I wouldn't agree, but I'd certainly understand where he's coming from
Not to mention, Hoffman has a better career save percentage too.
thats their job. To close games. Between the two, Hoffman is clearly better.
The funny thing is, if these roles were reversed, whereas Hoffman had ended up in NY and Rivera on any west coast team, all the Yankee fan boys would be singing a different tune.
that tune?
well Hells Bells of course.
Hoffman might have an argument in the regular season but Rivera's postseason history is just so great that Hoffman can't compare.
