seattlePI.com: Buhner ‘still bleeds Mariners blue’

When Jay Buhner learned in 1988 he was being traded to the Seattle Mariners, his first thought was, “Oh, crap!”

It was a reasonable reaction. Buhner was a New York Yankee, and while the Yankees were wandering baseball’s desert at the time, Buhner knew pinstripe tradition would eventually lift them out of the sand.

...

A power hitter and a good outfielder, Buhner figured he’d make his mark and parlay it into a sweet deal somewhere else. But he never left Seattle. His heyday—1995-97—coincided with the Mariners’ emergence as a contender. He is one of only three players in the Mariners Hall of Fame, and he still draws a crowd eight years after his battered body told him it was time to quit the game.

man… Jay Buhner is only 44.

Yanks were 85-76, just 3.5 games out in a tight AL East. I take it there's no qualifying exam to become a sportswriter or blogger or whatever the hell this person is.

count da (lack of) ringz....even though the yankees won more games in the 80s than any one else, they were a dismal, dismal failure.

That is one weird color scheme he's wearing in the photo. Did they still have that light blue and yellow color scheme when he was traded there?

And there's only three players in the Mariners Hall of Fame?

He likes the pitching, especially the bullpen, and can't wait to see what else springs from the mind of general manager Jack Zduriencik, whom he considers "a genius."

That's a good sign.

I thought only Dodger faithful can 'bleed blue.' I don't like them qualifying it by saying that Buhner bleeds 'Mariners blue.' They should have their own color.

Teal. He bleeds 'Mariners teal.'

I remember reading a Sports Illustrated (I think) story from Buhner's era in which he was able and willing to barf on command in the dugout. Lou Pinella, with a weak stomach, would then follow by tossing his cookies as well. So there'd be all sorts of hurling going on in the Mariner's dugout.

Three players:

Alvin Davis
Jay Buhner
Edgar Martinez

and one broadcaster:

Dave Niehaus.

That's it.

Not quite worthy of the word "hall" then. More like a Nook of Fame.

This story could not be better. I can imagine a young Ken Griffey Jr dying from laughter watching this happen. In the background, Edgar Martinez looks on in mild disgust.

It was little more than a nook for many years, when Davis and Niehaus were the only members. At that time, it was a single glass case in the entrance to the Mariners team store. Now, there's a large exhibit on the first level of Safeco Field that's actually quite good. It has displays for the four members, and on Mariners history, but it also has a nice section on significant major leagers who came from the Northwest, and the history of Northwest baseball in general, with quite a few items about early 20th century minor league ball out here. A few years ago, I was looking at the display and talking to an elderly gentleman, who mentioned that his father was in several of the photos. Turned out to be Earl Averill Jr, the son of the Hall of Famer, and a major-leager himself.

What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?!

My baseball people kept telling me "Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps!"

From that link I saw the Frank Costanza Irabu outburst. Didn't remember that one. That finale has really aged well.

Hey, you leave Mr. Logan out of this.

The last I knew (and still to this day, per Wikipedia), the Mavericks 'Hall of Fame', meaning retired numbers, consists of one Mr. Rolando Blackman and one Mr. Brad Davis. I'm surprised Harper hasn't gone up considering they last retired a number well over a decade ago. Dantley and Tarpley aren't for obvious reasons. And then you have a bunch of guys that will go in when they retire, and a couple of questionables. Nash, Dirk, and Kidd are all locks. Jimmy Jackson is a dark horse, I don't Jamal will happen.
