SF Gate: Torres’ nightmare is becoming a Giant again

Now I know the Cardiff Giant was a scary sight…but this Pirate if Giant story is even worse!

Salomon Torres back to the Giants? Maybe not a hot idea. In an interview before Friday night’s game, the Pirates reliever said he shuddered when he heard San Francisco had asked about him because he has such bad memories of being a Giant, particularly being bullied by Barry Bonds, and because he dislikes manager Felipe Alou.

“If I could beg, I would beg. Send me where you want, but not to San Francisco,” said Torres, who stressed he loves the city and people. He even made peace with Bonds and they chatted Friday. But Torres had such a rotten time in San Francisco, from 1993-95, the idea of going back revolts him.

...“I don’t want to relive what I went through, especially in ‘97 with the Expos with Felipe. I have the utmost respect for him, but if I stay away from him, it’s better. I’m just looking for my future sanity.”

I've always thought of Felipe Alou as a strong players' advocate. Old-school yes, but paternal.

The thought of Torres back in the orange and black makes me shudder too. I'm glad that he's managed to salvage something of a career for himself, but it's best for everyone if he winds up somewheere else.

I have no idea what went on between Felipe Alou and Torress nine years ago in Montreal. But Alou is an odd bird when it comes to his doghouse (apologies for the mixed metaphor). Once a player winds up there, he seldom is able to redeem himself. My personal misgivings about Torres aside, there's no point in the Giants acquiring him if Alou is reluctant to use him in key situations.

Boy, this ought to do wonders for his trade value.

particularly being bullied by Barry Bonds

Careful Salomen. Around these parts if you have anything negative to say about Barry Bonds, people will just say that you are a jerk.

Torres sounds like a delicate little flower.

Torres sounds like a delicate little flower.

He's anything but. He pitches often, he pitches well and he pitches hurt.

This is nothing new in Pgh. He has been quoted as saying this stuff before. He may have been too young at the time to handle the guff Alou and Bonds dished out to him but the old saying still applies, "fool me once . . ."

Of course, Torres also said that he and Bonds have kissed and made up.

Boy, this ought to do wonders for his trade value.

He doesn't WANT to get traded from Pittsburgh.

He was mentioning a few days ago how he's about ready to close on a new house in the area, and he's also got a family member undergoing medical treatments in one of the area medical facilities.

I have never heard an active player express so clearly exactly WHY he doesn't want to go to a particular team. I really respect Salomon Torres; I always have, but I don't know why (I hope it isn't because of the Sosa helmet shattering). He just seems like a hard worker and a serious thinker.
