SFGate: In Lowry, Giants are looking out for No. 3

Cue Jay-Z opening Rihanna’s “Umbrella” by going “uh-huh uh-huh”.

There is more to the story of why the Giants named Barry Zito their Opening Day starter, and it has to do with who will be slotted third in the rotation - the team leader in wins last year.

The micromanaging of the rotation in a manner similar to the 1985 edition is eerie. That team led off the year by pitching Atlee Hammaker and Dave LaPoint against the Padres so that they could send three righties against LA - Mike Krukow, Bill Laskey and Jim Gott. The strategy led to a 3-2 start, but the rest of the season was a disaster.

I really think they should have flipped Lowry for a young bat... Zito is more than serviceable as a number three pitcher and they've got talent enough to fill the other spots.

There seems to have been little interest. Another mediocre infield or outfield bat does the team little good at this point.

Even if they threw Sanchez into the deal?

Don't know...just remember reading Sabean said there had been very little interest in him. Then again, Sabean's an idiot, so who knows.

They should really work on getting Joe Crede to fill their third base need. Brandon Inge could also be another option.

Isn't a shame to pay a pitcher like Zito that much money, only to fill a lineup with sub par offensive players? What a mistake it was.

Of course, we should be optimistic, Molina said they need to win 95 games and that they don't necessarily need home runs to achieve that total.

Wow....

Crede makes no sense. He's a one year player, and the Giants aren't going to compete this year. Inge would make more sense, so long as Detroit ate some money.

Really they should have signed Dallas McPherson and given him a shot. Or trade for Andy Marte and see what he can do.

I also saw on rotoworld that Fred Lewis, Raj Davis and Dan Ortmeier are all out of options, meaning Nate Schierholtz won't make the team. The Giants are going to be awesome.

#3, the last time Sabean used a throwin to make a trade happen, it was Liriano in the Pierzynski deal. I mean, if you're a Twins fan, good on you, but a sell-low throwin into a buy-high trade for a hitter is precisely the last thing I'd recommend for the team. Sanchez might flame out, and if he does, you lose essentially nothing. If he doesn't, you feel *even stupider* than Sabean. That, let it be said, is pretty freaking stupid.

#5, Crede is basically Pedro Feliz, except without the best-in-the-majors glove. I'd give him league minimum, sure. He's a real major-leaguer, unlike half the Giants lineup. That said, I wouldn't trade so much as a bucket of balls for him. Well, maybe one bucket of really badly scuffed balls. But not more. Crikey, you mention 'sub par offensive players?' This is a man whose Eqa tops out in the .260s when he's completely healthy. And he probably isn't healthy any more.

#6, it's a given that the only reason to watch the Giants is to watch pitching. Sanchez is no star, but throws 93mph from the left. Might as well give the fans something worth tuning in for.

Don't forget his bad back!

What is the reasoning behind not pitching two left-handed starters in a row?

I don't believe there is any beyond "Conventional Baseball Wisdom". But these are the Giants we're talking about.
