Shaikin: Angels’ attention shifts from Mark Teixeira to CC Sabathia (RR)

The Angels, unwilling to meet Mark Teixeira’s desire for a 10-year contract, are in discussions with CC Sabathia and could offer him a contract that approaches the $140-million bid extended to him by the New York Yankees.

The Angels appear reluctant to guarantee more than seven years in a contract for Teixeira, said a source familiar with the club’s thinking. They appear more likely at this time to pursue Sabathia, with an offer in the range of Johan Santana’s six-year, $137.5-million contract with the New York Mets.

Teixeira remains the Angels’ top priority—the club would sign him but does not want to miss out on Sabathia while waiting to see whether Teixeira’s asking price falls. The Angels are not believed to have made a formal offer to either player.

General Manager Tony Reagins said the club has not ruled out retaining Teixeira.

“We’ve had discussions about what the potential framework of a deal might be,” Reagins said. “At this time, I would say we still have interest at a high level. We understood going into this that it was going to take some time to accomplish.”

Thanks to L.A. Barnald of L.A..

How high will Hal go?

10 years? I wouldn't go there.

In ten years:

Chelsea Clinton will be midway through her first term
"Chinese Democracy Part II" will be released
Julio Franco will attempt a comeback

10 years?! You've got to be high to have interest at that level.

So what you are saying is that Axl is going to work at a break-neck pace on his next album?

Wouldn't the Angels have to beat the Yankees by a decent margin to make up for the difference in state taxes?

This is sort what I have been trying to say about Teixeira all along. He's really good, but an 8 or 10-year deal for a guy who is not Albert Pujols and plays 1b? I think Teixeira is worth about 6/115 to the Angels or perhaps the Yankees. Other than that, it is hard for me to see it.

?

As a NYC resident, I can tell you, I play plenty of state and local income tax (yes, local income tax, too!). I can't imagine that's going to hurt the Angels in negotiations though I haven't lived in Calif. in a long time now, so maybe I'm wrong on this point.

I really want the Angels to keep Teixiera, but 10 years is way too long. After 2011, they will be wishing they had some money freed up to pursue an upgrade at first - Pujols.

Yeah. I think the Angels are the team that could get the most marginal value out of his presence in the lineup. But he's not Mickey Mantle, so I just can't see a 10-year deal.

This is my thinking too. There is nary a team in MLB that is as competitive as the Halos with as glaring a hole at 1st base and an offense that would REALLY be bolstered by a .400/.550 guy. He is their holy grail, IMO. I have been thinking crazy things about Teix - such as...

Offer him a choice on contract:

4 years/$112 million

5 years/$130 million

6 years/$145 million

7 years/$160 million

Something like this gives him the opportunity to get another big contract in 4 years and the Halos pay a premium for his peak but don't have to worry about his decline. This might be a crazy thought, but I really think the Halos need to keep Teix in the fold as Vlad's decline looks to be real and fabulous.

Also, I have thought about giving him an opt-out clause if the team finishes below .500 with the caveat that he would have had to play at least 120 games to be able to opt out.

Anyway, I am thinking outside the box on this one and really hoping that something gets done because the Halos have holes to fill offensively and Teix does a great job of meeting a HUGE need on this team.

I advocated in another thread that a GM of a big budget club should sign the top guy available whatever the price. That said there is no way I would sign Teixiera to a 10/200 million contract.

He's not the same hitter as he was winning the 2004 MVP, and his value is all in the bat these days, he can limp around RF but not necessarily in a way that makes you want him out there.

But I think there's a lot of life left in that bat. His 130 OPS+ last year was the worst since his rookie year, but still a damn good hitter.

I think my "leave it" point would be around 7 years and 150 million.

I guess if the last three years or so see a nosedive in AAV, I'd consider it. But at the AAV they're talking about, I don't think it's reponsible in any way to give out that kind of contract to a great-but-not-excellent baseballer.

That's about what I was thinking too - but I think the Halos are really uniquely in need of someone like Teix. Just my craziness, probably.

With one calculation, assuming (falsely) no creative tax schemes, Sabathia would take home about $73M over six years living in NYC (of $140M), assuming no tax changes. He would take home about $75M living in L.A. meanwhile.
   17. TVerik Posted: November 25, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#3015839)
...and this assumes that he's going to spend the whole contract toiling for that one club, and he's going to be a resident of that state.

Most of the Yankees, for instance, live in New Jersey in-season.

I'm surprised everyone seems to be taking this report at face value. We have

-story whose sourcing appears to be entirely from within the Angels organization
-report of contract demands that border on extortionary
-report of newfound interest in another big FA
-statement from GM that refuses to close the door on future negotiations with Teixeira and Boras

The Angels are negotiating through the media. That's totally cool - though it's a little pathetic the way local writers are constantly willing to play stenographer in these situations - but it shouldn't be taken for more than it is. They're still the favorites with Teixeira.

Something in the range of 7/160 or 8/180 sounds about right.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the Angels only need to come close to the Yankees deal to land CC if the rumors about his wanting to play close to home are true.

Hee, hee, hee. Yeah, like people making in excess of $10mil per are paying nearly 50% in taxes. Your assumption of creative tax schemes and off shore addresses(my assumption) is spot on. It's been mentioned in publications here in Aus. that the wealthiest people end up paying about 20cents on the dollar.
