Shaikin: Frank McCourt appears close to agreeing he’ll sell Dodgers

After a two-year battle to keep the Dodgers through a bruising divorce and a bankruptcy filing, owner Frank McCourt appears close to agreement with Major League Baseball on a bankruptcy settlement in which he would agree to sell the team.

McCourt would get some control over the sale, people familiar with the negotiations said Monday. The purchase probably would include Dodger Stadium and the surrounding parking lots in a package that could command a record price of $1 billion or more.

The negotiations are fluid, and settlement talks could fall apart at any time, said the people, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the confidential discussions. McCourt has not reached any final decision to sell, another person cautioned.

Dodgers spokesman Robert Siegfried, asked Monday whether a settlement appears close, said the team had no comment “to such kinds of inquiries.” MLB spokesman Pat Courtney also declined to comment.

Thanks to Barnald Ravine.

Either his signature or his brains will be on the bill of sale.

Perhaps Jim Crane told Bud "Sure, I'll move to the AL -- but first, I need you to lop off El Caballo's head and dispose of it."

Get in the boat, Fredo.

I'm assuming a shortage of worthy candidates led to McCourt's ownership, but I don't see how MLB can do worse this time.

i don't have a lot of confidence. look at jim crane. besides, i have yet to be talked out of my belief that beelzebud likes to bring in inherently weak ownership, especially in a franchise with a big upside like the dodgers.

Are we convinced that he's capable of providing the latter, if it becomes necessary?

I'm surprised that a big oil company doesn't scoop up a major sports franchise.
They make billions in profit every quarter, and I have to think there would be some marketing/goodwill aspect to picking up a sports franchise.

They can buy their own naming rights and call the stadium Oil Field.

Fox is really worried about losing the tv rights to the Dodgers. Wouldn't be surprised if they buy the team again.

yankee clapper

bud is approving jim crane, so he already IS doing worse than mccourt. bud doesn't care about future money troubles as long as he gets another DH team NOW

Well, I don't think Jim Crane will try to steal all the equity of the Astros like the McCourts tried to do out of the Dodgers.

Perhaps a power company could buy an NFL team and call the stadium the Electrical Grid.

tripon

crane CAN'T steal ALL the equity because he can't get his hands on the stadium or the few parking lots. he's already put the franchise deeply in debt and is getting rid of any player he can who makes more than minimum

once he HAS the franchise, he can otherwise mccourt all he wants to. bud has ALREADY shown he don't care one bit about the astros

he's buying a (former) major league franchise to the total price of 25 million dollars out of pocket.

he won't have to put in another penny and he has made it plain he is not going to.

nobody cares except a few remaining astros fans and nobody is GOING to care unless he is stupid enough to refuse to get some crappy cheap FA every year (as loria forgot to do)

I really doubt the judiciary can buy an NBA team and call the arena the Supreme Court.

Didn't the NBA quash the Memphis Grizzlies' idea of renaming the team the Express and calling the arena The Hub?
