Shakin:  Chipper Jones a July fit for Dodgers or Angels?

You’ve heard this story from the Dodgers and Angels in many previous summers, and you’ll probably hear it from them again this summer: We’d like to trade for a big bat.

How about Chipper Jones? The idea was floated by none other than Jones himself, in a revealing interview today with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Jones, incensed that the Braves did not match the Red Sox offer for franchise icon John Smoltz, said he might be the next one out the Atlanta door:

The Braves traded Mark Teixeira to the Angels last July, with the Angels sending Casey Kotchman—a young first baseman to replace Teixeira—and a minor league relief pitcher in return. The comparable position player for the Angels this time would be third baseman Brandon Wood, but the Angels had Kendry Morales and Mark Trumbo lined up behind Kotchman at first base. The line at third base has yet to form.

Jones has 10-5 rights, veterans like him hate being traded in the middle of a season, he's the only big bat the Braves really have, and if they got rid of him at this point in his career -- unlike Smoltz he's still probably got a couple of productive years ahead of him -- the entire city would turn its back on the organization. His comments yesterday were likely 45% genuine frustration at being the last guy around who remembers what it's like to win in Atlanta and 55% lobbying the Braves for a contract extension. Finally, even if the Braves were going to consider trading Jones to the Dodgers, the package they would demand in return would probably start with Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp, but by no means end there. In other words, they'd demand that the Dodgers give up their very future for a half season of a player who, while fabulous when he plays, is very likely to get hurt at some point. Unless the person making the decisions for the Dodgers thinks like I do when I'm mismanaging a fantasy team, they'd hang up the phone within 11 seconds of Frank Wren voicing his demands.

Other than that, sure, great idea.

Seems like an apt description of Colletti.

Word. Although the Dodgers just signed Casey Blake to a multiyear deal, so they don't likely don't perceive 3B to be a hole (although they should). Although moving Jones to 1B might be a worthwhile attempt to keep him healthy and his bat in the lineup.

I think the Angels would be fine at third if they traded Brandon. He's not even a starter yet, Figgins is. Having SeanRod, Matt Brown, and Freddy Sandoval gives the team at least as much depth as they had at first.

Of course the Angels could avoid the need for a misummer bat trade by just signing Adam Dunn to be their one lefty bat.

[1] Except the Braves traded Texieria for a slightly below average first baseman, and a young power arm that may or may not even make it to the Majors. Teams already know what the price of a Chipper Jones would be, and for the Dodgers, it would be something like Ivan DeJesus Jr. and Elbert.

That's because everyone knew that Teixeira was going to be a FA and leave the Braves. Whereas the team would likely be able to resign Chipper, so the Braves are in a stronger bargaining position.

Of course, the whole premise of this article is that Chipper wouldn't want to re-sign, and if that were to be the case and known to other teams, the Braves would not be in prime position.
