Shaun Marcum out for season

Mets lose a starting pitcher (albeit one they were probably going to remove from the rotation soon).

New York Mets right-hander Shaun Marcum will undergo surgery next Monday in St. Louis to address numbness and coldness in his pitching hand and will miss the remainder of the season, assistant general manager John Ricco said Tuesday.

The Mets will save on his incentives this season.

• $250,000 apiece for reaching 120, 140, 160 and 170 innings.

• $375,000 apiece for reaching 180 and 190 innings.

• $500,000 for reaching 200 innings.

• $375,000 apiece for 90 and 120 days on active roster, or on disabled list for injury unrelated to his right arm.

• $500,000 apiece for being on active roster or DL for injury unrelated to right arm for 150 and 170 days. (The major league season is 183 days.)

Since the injury is right arm related, the active roster incentives shouldn’t come into play. And since he only has 78.1 innings this year, then he’s not going to make any of the innings incentives.

I wish Marcum well. he did some fine things with the brewers and it's tough to watch him these days.

the one suggestion I have for the guy is to learn to throw a major league strike at 72 mph. because if your fastball has dipped from 89 to 84, which it has for Marcum, then you need a corresponding drop in the changeup. not seeing that delta.

know it's tough. wish him the best. but if you are going to be a fastball changeup guy then if you really don't have a fastball then you better scrounge up a really, really slow changeup.

can Marcum be a righthanded Jamie moyer?

I thought this was a good signing at the time (low enough base salary, guy with a good track record), but what a disaster. On the plus side, his 8-inning, 7 strikeout outing last month was fun.

In the "things no one expected" category, Marlon Byrd's up to a 126 OPS+.

Marcum was a lot of fun to watch with the Jays. He didn't have any outstanding pitches, but had good control with all of them. It would be nice if he could recover from this, but it's probably more realistic to think he's done as an effective pitcher - the guy has already had a ton of arm injuries over the years.
