Sherman: Yankees should bat Jeter at bottom of order

Jeter is a concept
By which we can measure

There are many ways to think about a lineup, but there is one inarguable concept when constructing a batting order: You want your best hitters to bat most frequently.

So why does Derek Jeter continue to hit in one of the top two spots in the order?

The short answer is because he is Derek Jeter.

At this moment, Jeter is the weakest link in the everyday lineup, which means he should be batting eighth or ninth.

...But this is not about removing Jeter from the 2010 everyday lineup. Pressure games are coming and the Yankees know Jeter will not be unnerved in those situations. This is about recognizing that there is no meritocracy when it comes to Jeter. When, for example, Javier Vazquez lost his fastball, he lost his rotation spot. Jeter has metaphorically lost his fastball as a hitter, becoming a groundball metronome who hardly ever strikes the ball with authority. Yet he not only does not lose playing time, he continues to bat more frequently than more deserving teammates.

I directly asked Girardi whether, if Jeter’s name were Joe Smith, he still would be hitting atop the lineup.

“Yes,” the manager said. “I don’t know if a change would bring shockwaves [to the clubhouse]. All I know is that I believe in Derek.”

I don’t believe in Fat Elvis…

Sherman is right. Jeter should lead off against lefties and hit eighth or ninth against right-handed pitchers.

Jeter needs boats, Jeter needs boats.

Fat Elvis still toured constantly and could sing the #### out of anything when he felt like it (his late version of "Unchained Melody" gets me every time).

Anyway, if batting Jeter at the top of the order makes the Yankees a little likelier to lose, I'm fine with that.

Leading off for the NY Yankees... Carl Crawford.

Next year that is.

Unlikely. The OF is kind of full.

They need to spend their money on another reliable SP.

Yeah, I don't see Crawford happening unless one of Gardener or Granderson is moved in a trade for a top starter.

I just believe in Jetes...Yoko and Jetes.

I wonder what I said about that Burnett contract when they signed it. I probably didn't like it, but I probably liked it more than I should have. I know what I said about the Vazquez acquisition . . .

The Yankees shouldn't bat Jeter at all. Of course they should still trot him out at SS but should just skip his spot in the order every time. Yes, it's an automatic out but that's better than watching the great Jeter embarrass himself and all things Yankee with a 94 OPS+.

From an outsider's perspective, it seems if you have CC, Burnett has done fine as a roll of the dice. I know it's not MY money, but again, from over here, Burnett hasn't seemed particularly damaging.

As far as Jeter goes, I think it would be awesome if the Yankees get a ring this year he just says the hell with it and retires. I mean, he won't, because there's still a bizarre outside chance he could catch Yogi, and he still needs his 3000, but it would be pretty nifty if he just hung it up under those circumstances and basically told everyone to suck on his legacy, take it or leave it.

A.J. Burnett 2010

5.15 ERA for 77 ERA+
4.74 FIP
4.64 x-FIP
4.56 tERA

A.J. Burnett sucks.

A.J. Burnett won Game 2 of the 2009 World Series. I don't care what he does for the next three years.

A.J. Burnett 2010.... A.J. Burnett sucks.

Well, my point is for the whole package, from the start. As rLr brings up, so far, so good, really.

(Caveat already admitted, the view from the outside. The outside of Queens.)

Burnett really has stunk this year, but I have a funny feeling that he could run off a couple solid starts this October. Just because he's A.J. and who the hell knows what he's gonna do.

Ah, if only Jeter knocked up someone like Steffi Graf or Jeanette Lee when he was still in high school, in order to provide the Yankees with an orderly line of succession.

Jeanette Lee is far too cool to be coupled with the likes of Derek Jeter.

Of course she is. She's a Scienceite.

The way he's been pitching, he's lucky the Yankees don't have more starting pitching depth. Or he wouldn't be starting in October at all.

I bet Stephen Drew will be playing SS for the Yankees on opening day, 2012.

Yes, but in what Borough do Scienceites spend at least a third of their time in every day? You don't think she might have taken one for the team?

He still may not.

CC, Pettitte, Hughes, Nova could work.

I will be very, very, very surprised if Ivan Nova gets a start in the playoffs.
