Short: Indians sign Jeff Francoeur

Commenters:

“Frenchy for Governor of Brohio

“Delta flies to Columbus but not Cleveland. I think this is an omen.”

The Indians just announced that they have signed outfielder Jeff Francoeur to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training…

Francoeur, who turns 30 on Wednesday, hit rock bottom last season by batting just .204/.238/.298 with three home runs and 17 RBI over 81 games between the Royals and Giants. His .536 OPS was third-lowest in MLB among players with at least 250 plate appearances… Francoeur wasn’t much better in 2012, putting up 16 homers and a .665 OPS in 148 games, so his days as a regular are probably over.

The Indians already have a right-handed hitting outfielder with Ryan Raburn, so it could be a challenge for Francoeur to crack the Opening Day roster…

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Francoeur will receive a $1 million base salary if he makes the Indians and could earn more with incentives.

This dude isn't even 30 yet?

Ray - that amazed me, too.

He's had a lot of career for a mediocre player who isn't 30 yet.

cue another season's worth of "frenchy's in the best shape of his life" and "francoeur's gonna walk more this year, really!" articles.

Comps for Francoeur: outfielders centered in him in terms of PA and OPS+ through age 29:

Player           Rfield   PA OPSWAR/pos  SB      Pos
Jeff Francoeur       53 4959   91     7.3  52
*9/H78D
Bill Buckner         29 4636   98    10.4 116     379H
Brian McRae           8 4620   91    14.1 174
*8/HD
Juan Pierre           3 5235   85    14.5 389
*8/H
Rick Manning
-1 5245   86    12.1 158  *8/H97D
Whitey Witt
-30 4679   98    12.7  77 869/47H5

Not many comps to speak of; that's a pretty wide range, and there's only five players. All were center fielders except Buckner, who was a much better hitter … still, it's appalling how bad a hitter Buckner actually was before he turned 30. From 30 through 35 Buckner wasn't bad, though – at the plate, at least. Maybe there's hope for Francoeur.

I was expecting the "Governor of Brohio" line to be the first post; instead, it was part of the intro.

Only 248 walks in 4959 plate appearances. The odds that I died during my autologous stem cell transplant were the same.

Meanwhile Lloyd Waner had 420 walks in 8334 plate appearances. And 173 strikeouts.

I predict a messy, wholly negative outcome from the Frenchy-Indian WAR

He'll hit .600 in Spring training and go 3-4 on opening day. He won't see another hit until May.

Doesn't Swisher have the Brohio gubernatorial race essentially sewn up? Frenchie's best shot for office might be hook up with KC's AAA team and run for mayor of Bromaha, Nebraska.

What makes his career WAR of 7.3 truly impressive is that he's had three seasons of 3+ WAR.

Pardon my double post.

Cleveland's pretty thin in the outfield and with right-handed hitters. I'd say there's a pretty good chance he makes the 25-man roster.
