S.I.: Heyman: Sheffield has only himself to blame for plight

Rich W... points out Heyman’s latest Daily Scoop.

In reality, there’s nothing Sheffield can do about any of this short of retiring, which we all know he’s not about to do, not with more moolah to be made, plus 500 home runs in sight (he’s at 455) and a chance for Cooperstown (though he won’t get my vote—between the steroid connection and the constant complaints that have dominated the last part of his career). He can hit, but he remains one predictable piece of work. He has become the embodiment of a caricature of a greedy ballplayer. Sheffield was upset in spring because the Yankees weren’t picking up the option. Now it’s the opposite, he’s upset because they are.

...Maybe someone reminded him that this is his deal, the one he was so proud to make. Because this week he’s been oddly silent. Yankees people are hoping that maybe the recent silence will help their chances to get what they want, which is a fair deal. As one Yankees person said, hopefully, “He’s shot his [bullets]. There’s nothing more he can do.”

I'm told it was only supposed to be a "dry run". Unfortunately, now I'm afraid Sheffield has something of a mess on hands.

The last part of his career? What about the first chunk, when he moaned constantly about being in Milwaukee and threw the ball away to get traded?

"Soriano will have to explain why Vladimir Guerrero and Miguel Tejada re only making $70 million." Could that be the collusion era the owners are making a payment in the new CBA for?
Sheffield's complaining about money and contracts must be what Curt Flood sue mlb for 35 years ago.

I do understand why Sheffield was upset about his option not getting picked up and then his option getting picked up. It's different things -- in the spring he was upset that they told him that they were probably going to do it, but didn't do it -- why jerk him around, are you making him audition for the option? Then why tell him you're probably going to pick it up? Just do it or don't, and shutup.

Then, after the season, after it was obvious there was no real role for him on the team anymore, he's upset that they're picking up the option just to trade him. He was hoping he'd be in control of his own destiny this offseason, and he's upset about that.

Still, he's be a putz about this whole thing. But I understand the seemingly contradictory attitudes he's had about the option.

As predicted here several times, Aramis Ramirez opted out of the remaining $22 million and two years...

We know, Jon. But anybody comfortable with a prediction just makes it once. Not several times.
