Hold your Azerbaijani speed horses there…Willy Taveras got three hits last night!
The first is shortstop Edgar Renteria. Thirty-three and a mediocre defender with an unreal amount of wear on his treads, he has had one year in the last six in which he was something more than a decent hitter, and is thus exactly the sort one doesn’t want to tie on to. So of course the San Francisco Giants, who have made a cult of this class of player, signed him for two years and $18.5 million, and have been rewarded by the sight of Renteria trying to keep his slugging average and OBP above .300.
The second is Reds center fielder Willy Taveras. We can grant that there must be something about him that doesn’t show up in the boxscore—he has, after all, played for two pennant winners—and still marvel at the idea of paying a man with a career slugging average of .337 $6.25 million for two years. Always inept at the plate, Taveras is hitting like a pitcher this year, with a remarkable .220/.269/.273 line, and may be the single biggest reason why the Reds aren’t quite in the race right now.
Whether one thinks Taveras or Renteria was the worst signing comes down to matters of principle and philosophy. Is it worse to pay an outrageously bad player a relatively small sum of money, or to pay a merely bad one three times as much? I would tend toward the former—Renteria, after all, is usually passable even at his worst, whereas Taveras strains mightily to be so at his best. Either way, the sight of Taveras weakly grounding out to first, or of Oliver Perez throwing a ball three feet wide of the plate, and the accompanying mental images of burning piles of greenbacks, are what should come to mind this winter once the elderly and injured hit the market. People do win the lotto, but tens of millions lose.

1. plim Posted: June 26, 2009 at 01:47 PM (#3233926)welcome to boston, circa 2005. as much as i liked the signing at the time, one would hope that a GM would be able to see that 02, 03, and 07 are the flukes and everything else is the norm.
Ollie Perez has no idea what you're talking about.
Also, why does Marchman look so grumpy in his by-line photo?
If he plays well in half the seasons, then it isn't a fluke.
But he doesn't have much range anymore, and his age certainly didn't make him a good bet for this year. Between Renteria, Furcal, and the OC, the shortstop market sure was a dud in 2008-09.
No mention of John Smoltz and his 9.00 ERA?
I don't know if he said that specifically, but he did cite Rick Cerone for his historic ability to milk multiple contracts out of one good year.
Frankie was probably talking about how many good years a player needs to get into the HOF, provided he's a friend.
It looks like he is disappointed in me.
Oliver Perez at 3/$36MM is a whole different kettle of fish. That's some serious money for a stiff. And Milton Bradley at 3/$30MM is horrific.
I don't know; why couldn't they have just gone with Frandsen at SS? He can handle the position, and wouldn't hit any worse than Renteria is.
After one start?
True, but he's about due for a trip to the DL with a dislocated spleen or something.
If thye had known Renteria would be this bad the should have just given the job to Uribe.
Gotcha! Delivery was too dry for me to tell.:-)
Obviously they didn't know Renteria would be this bad (and, to be fair, the season isn't yet half-way over; he could find a hot streak and salvage his season to some extent). But the issue, of course, is that given his age there was a clear risk he would be this bad, and therefore going with Frandsen and/or readily-available journeyman utilityman talent such as Uribe made a lot more economic sense.
Ask Wayne Garland.
*Mark Teieira is probably not worth $20 million, but he is producing.
*Marco Scutaro at $1.1 million is a steal for Toronto.
*Chone Figgins has been a good purchase at $5.775M The only worse shortstop in the NL this year than Renteria has been Jimmy Rollins. If the Phillies don't pick up his option, he's a free agent after next year. No doubt that someone will pay Rollins at least Eric Byrnes money ($11/yr) from 2011-2015. ... Jason Giambi is making more than $5 million in Oakland. The A's would have been better off saving the money and playing Barton .... Brian Giles (who signed with SD in 2006) really sucks ess now for $9 million (54 OPS+). Giles was good last year, which I guess is the reason the Pads picked up his option. He suddenly got old at age 38.
What's he worth?
I have thought it's funny that everyone has been assuming for the past month that the Red Sox are getting John Smoltz in his prime. Now, he may be good, but everyone's been treating his return like he's a known quantity for a 3.00 ERA.
True, but he's about due for a trip to the DL with a dislocated spleen or something.
Or a benching, which I believe he's getting starting today.
Is that kind of like how Jed Lowrie became more able to be a good major league SS when it became apparent that Lugo wasn't going to produce well?
