SI: Padres to hire Hoyer as GM

The San Diego Padres will name Jed Hoyer as their new general manager later today, a front office source tells SI.com.

Hoyer, 35, most recently served as the Boston Red Sox’s senior vice president and assistant general manager. He joined the Red Sox front office at age 28, where he has helped to build Boston’s rosters, assisted in contract negotiations and offered sabermetric analysis. He served as Red Sox co-general manger for 44 days in 2005 while Theo Epstein took hiatus from the team.

Look out Josh Byrnes. The battle for 4th place in the NL West just got that much more interesting.

If you're running a franchise, the best place to save money is on the GM. Expensive, experienced GMs are the new market inefficiency.

Good hire.

Jed was may favorite person over there at the Red Sox. A hell of a nice guy and tolerant of my loquaciousness. Very best of luck to him.

What can you do, it was a close call. :)

Favorite person for what, is the question.

We've all seen that photo, Voros. I think a person would be more comfortable off your radar.

Let's not damn Jed via guilt by association. It wasn't his fault I got hired.

So who does he take with him? Does Depo still have the most juice in that place? (No Brian Giles jokes, please.) That's an organization that probably needs a complete teardown post-Towers.

I imagine DePodesta will be calling plays for the Redskins soon.

So Kim Ng interviews and doesn't get the job again.

Yep. I wonder if the Padres interviewed Ng just so they can cross off the minority requirement off of their search.

Don't bet on it. No way the Giants will repeat this season and are the likely candidates to be battling for 4th place. The Padres had one of the best records in baseball from August onward; they have some good young players and will be much better next season.

Not at all. The organization made huge strides under the leadership of Sandy Alderson. They improved their scouting and drafting significantly and actually have decent prospects in the system now. They're not a top level organization in terms of minor league talent, but they're no longer at the bottom of the pack either. Additionally they've put a top notch facility in place in the DR and are stocking it with qulity talent. Towers, as usual, made some nice trades this year brining in some good arms in exchange for Peavy and some prospects in exchange for Hairston. The organization is not in need of a complete teardown at all. Ongoing improvement in drafting and development will be needed, but that is true for every small to mid-market team.

Why would you wonder that?

It's possible that the Padres never had any intention of hiring her but knew they could catch crap if they didn't at least interview her.

And the Diamondbacks are likely to be much better. No matter how talented Jed Hoyer is, he has one giant anchor dragging him down that Josh Byrnes doesn't have, San Diego's Co-GM, Jeffrey Moorad.

Sure, but why would you think that of the Padres? This is true of any team. Is there something about the Padres that makes you say this? I'm not aware of any issues of race or gender bias with them.

Hm, didn't follow the d-backs much this year. I know Upton and Reynolds are studs. Where is the improvement coming from? Webb being healthy will certainly be a big help. It will come down to pithcing for the Padres. Can they add a starter or two from outside. Will they get some help from their young guys this season or will it take them another year in the minors. Should be an interesting division.

I think you kind of answered your own question. Yes, it's true of any team, including the Padres. That's why I thought that of them, just like I would've thought the same thing regarding any other team. There's nothing specific about the Padres that makes me say that and I'm not more aware of any race or gender bias issues than you are. I wasn't trying to accuse the Padres of anything. All I said is that it's possible. Hell, for all my dumb ass knows, it may not even be likely. But it's certainly possible.

It would certainly be irritating having to fly all over the place for interviews as the token minority so the teams could tick a box. There should be a designated guy who gets all those calls so the serious candidates knows there really is interest when they get an interview. José Canseco would be perfect for the role, he certainly wouldn't mind an endless stream of first-class tickets and five-star hotels, and the teams would have perfectly valid reasons for not hiring him.
