In the top of the second inning tonight, Jason Bay crashed into the left field wall at Citi Field trying to make a play on what would eventually be an inside-the-park home run for Jay Bruce. Bay was noticeably shaken up on the play and was immediately removed from the game with what manager Terry Collins described as a likely concussion. A good number of Mets fans booed Bay as he left the field, and reliever Jon Rauch, no stranger to verbal attacks from Mets fans, took to Twitter and came to the aid of his beleaguered outfielder.
Jon Rauch
Very disappointed with the fans who booed Jason Bay as he came off the field. This is a serious injury that affects his livelihood…
...And you boo this man for his trouble? This was simply a pathetic, small-minded, and abjectly shameful display by some portion of tonight’s home crowd and frankly I’m disgusted by it. Anyone who considers himself a passionate fan and a compassionate human being should feel likewise.
Thanks to Chet.

1. Lassus Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:03 AM (#4158480)Wait..... Bay has another concussion again? Oh lord. He just hit a HR the other day! There was (a modicum) of hope....
Booing a player injured on a play is pretty ridiculous, but why did fellow sh!tty over-priced, underperforming free agent acquisition Rauch have to use twitter to demonstrate his solidarity?
Bay has gone 2 for 26 with a walk since coming back.
FTFY
Edit: however, the snowball assault may make it less funny to you now
Wasn't an Oakland Raiders fan in full regalia beaten unconscious at an Eagles game a few years ago? That might make it difficult to get volunteers for this research project.
Texas.
No. There were however 2 people shot at a Raiders-49ers pre-season game this year.
Jets fans did that to Chad Pennington.
Everybody wears other teams jerseys in Atlanta, we're the Noah's Ark of fandom.
Oh, NYM. Not hassled there because I'm a Mets fan. Duh.
That's messed up.
Bay always tries really hard and deserves credit for that and it's only a game so no one should cheer a potentially serious injury. The sad thing about Bay getting injured is that it probably won't affect the quality of the team negatively.
Regarding fan behavior it would be interesting to try to test which fans were the worst. I would think alcohol consumption would fit in well - it seems to drive much of the idiot behavior.
Why the redundant adjectives? I think Falcons fan would have sufficed.
You're lucky he didn't make you squeal like a pig....unless of course he did.
The patch of grass next to the patch of grass where he stands for every batter is not sure this is so.
It is a serious injury. It has absolutely no effect on his livelihood. I'm kind of annoyed that Jon Rauch feels the need to pretend otherwise.
This is overstating it. Bay has a vesting option next year that will be affected by his health, and then he has future contracts that will be affected by his health. His production will also influence his promotional opportunities and such.
I don't think Rauch was too out of line.
That's messed up.
Kind of the point, particularly while discussing whether Philly fans are always more boorish than NY fans.
Assuming there are 10 females to every male, and the women are chosen for their highly stimulating sexual characteristics, I'm in.
"We weren't booing Bay. We were booing the situation."
Not that I wish bad things on Jason Bay, but I'm really hoping that option doesn't vest.
Actually, it's seven of every clean animal, which means somebody gets left out when they pair off.
The Mets did what they needed to do to guarantee that Francisco Rodriguez's option wouldn't vest. I think they'll do the same with Bay. And it won't be tough to justify: who on earth would sit Nieuwenhuis or Hairston for Bay at this point?

With every new injury I think back to when Bay objected, rather vocally, to the Red Sox desire not to sign him to a long term deal because the team was concerned he would be injury-prone. Alas.
The Red Sox were concerned that he would be suddenly unable to play baseball without ramming his head into things?
Johan won’t get 215 innings next year either.
(Damn Omar and his penchant for ridiculous vesting options….)
