Simon: Jon Rauch Scolds Mets Fans For Booing Injured Jason Bay

In the top of the second inning tonight, Jason Bay crashed into the left field wall at Citi Field trying to make a play on what would eventually be an inside-the-park home run for Jay Bruce. Bay was noticeably shaken up on the play and was immediately removed from the game with what manager Terry Collins described as a likely concussion. A good number of Mets fans booed Bay as he left the field, and reliever Jon Rauch, no stranger to verbal attacks from Mets fans, took to Twitter and came to the aid of his beleaguered outfielder.

  Jon Rauch

Very disappointed with the fans who booed Jason Bay as he came off the field. This is a serious injury that affects his livelihood…

...And you boo this man for his trouble? This was simply a pathetic, small-minded, and abjectly shameful display by some portion of tonight’s home crowd and frankly I’m disgusted by it. Anyone who considers himself a passionate fan and a compassionate human being should feel likewise.

Thanks to Chet.

Even though I agree, I still want you personally to shut up because you have a neck tattoo and you suck.

Wait..... Bay has another concussion again? Oh lord. He just hit a HR the other day! There was (a modicum) of hope....

Phillies fans did the same thing to Del Ennis when he was carried off the field in a stretcher nearly 60 years ago, but I thought that Mets fans were supposed to be more civilized.

Jason Bay is now as unpopular as Pete Reiser was popular.

Booing a player injured on a play is pretty ridiculous, but why did fellow sh!tty over-priced, underperforming free agent acquisition Rauch have to use twitter to demonstrate his solidarity?
   4. Benji Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:42 AM (#4158530)
I think it would be more insulting if the fans wildly cheered as Bay was removed. But if Rauch ever gets hurt we might see that.

Bay has gone 2 for 26 with a walk since coming back.

absolutely horrible, disgraceful display. it is funny to me that Philly fans get a bad rap over an incident (booing Santa) that happened 44 years ago (what is the statute of limitations for bad fan behavior?; we hadn't even landed on the moon yet, when this event occurred), and I find NYC fans to me much more boorish; rude; and threatening. i would love for someone to take a summer project, and wear an opponents jersey to a game at every MLB park, and walk around the concourses and the outfield, gauging reactions. My small sample size experience tells me that NYC has the least cordial fans.

And then the fans vomited on him. Wait, that was in Philly last year.

FTFY

Edit: however, the snowball assault may make it less funny to you now

That's true, ever since the fans booed Santa, fans in Philly have been nothing but class, and certainly never booed an injured player.

Nice comeback. I lived in Philly and had season tickets. That was as classless set of fans ever put on earth. Well, Braves fans for their ginormous ignorance. I wear my visiting t-jersey everywhere and the only places it is a problem is Philly and Atlanta. And I have been to about 30 parks (including replaced ones) and almost all of them multiple times (More than two: SD, Ana, LA, SF, CHN, MIL, PHL, ATL, MIA, BAL, WAS, DET, CLE, NYY, BOS, TOR, CIN (oak, TBiA, CHA, PIT only once, Not: TB, KC, STL, HOU, ARZ, COL, SEA, MIN - who am I missing?).

Funny, I have found the fans in Atlanta to be both cordial and intelligent, among the best around. Are you sure you are at Turner Field?

Wasn't an Oakland Raiders fan in full regalia beaten unconscious at an Eagles game a few years ago? That might make it difficult to get volunteers for this research project.

No. There were however 2 people shot at a Raiders-49ers pre-season game this year.

I think it would be more insulting if the fans wildly cheered as Bay was removed.

Jets fans did that to Chad Pennington.

Everybody wears other teams jerseys in Atlanta, we're the Noah's Ark of fandom.

I am shocked and astonished that someone publicly demonstrating Mets fandom is more likely to be jeered by fans of the Phillies and Braves than by fans of the Angels or Royals or Brewers or Tigers or Rangers or Diamondbacks.
   22. VCar Posted: June 17, 2012 at 09:30 AM (#4159130)
Agree about Atlanta fans respecting other teams' fans. I've lived here 15 years and have only had one incident when cheering for my Balto/DC based teams at any game, and I've been to a bunch. (That was a drunken redneck Falcons fan who sounded like he came in from the backwoods for the game.) Even had a few locals congratulate me at the park after Hammels 1-hitter last night. Can't say I was ever treated that well when I went to games in New York.

That's messed up.

Bay always tries really hard and deserves credit for that and it's only a game so no one should cheer a potentially serious injury. The sad thing about Bay getting injured is that it probably won't affect the quality of the team negatively.

   25. Bitter Mouse is a genre addict Posted: June 17, 2012 at 03:17 PM (#4159250)
I almost always support the fans right to boo. Heck I have booed the home team when the deserved it. Booing an injured player is very tacky though.

Regarding fan behavior it would be interesting to try to test which fans were the worst. I would think alcohol consumption would fit in well - it seems to drive much of the idiot behavior.

Living outside of Philadelphia, I have concluded that the worst fans are indeed found here in Philly. How anyone can root for a scumbag like Michael Vick is beyond me.

The patch of grass next to the patch of grass where he stands for every batter is not sure this is so.

It is a serious injury. It has absolutely no effect on his livelihood. I'm kind of annoyed that Jon Rauch feels the need to pretend otherwise.

This is overstating it. Bay has a vesting option next year that will be affected by his health, and then he has future contracts that will be affected by his health. His production will also influence his promotional opportunities and such.

I don't think Rauch was too out of line.

Kind of the point, particularly while discussing whether Philly fans are always more boorish than NY fans.

"We weren't booing Bay. We were booing the situation."

Not that I wish bad things on Jason Bay, but I'm really hoping that option doesn't vest.

The Mets did what they needed to do to guarantee that Francisco Rodriguez's option wouldn't vest. I think they'll do the same with Bay. And it won't be tough to justify: who on earth would sit Nieuwenhuis or Hairston for Bay at this point?

Not outweighed by the hassle of being a Mets fan, as provided by the Mets.

With every new injury I think back to when Bay objected, rather vocally, to the Red Sox desire not to sign him to a long term deal because the team was concerned he would be injury-prone. Alas.

The Red Sox were concerned that he would be suddenly unable to play baseball without ramming his head into things?

My point is that Bay said they had no cause for concern about his potential for injury, not that either Bay or the Red Sox were able to predict the specific injuries he has sustained.
   40. Ravecc Posted: June 18, 2012 at 02:14 PM (#4160073)
Bay’s option vests with 500 PA’s in both 2012 and 2013 or 600 PA’s in 2013. He won’t get 500 PA’s this year, so the first scenario is dead, and I think it will be easy enough not to give him 600 next year.

Johan won’t get 215 innings next year either.

(Damn Omar and his penchant for ridiculous vesting options….)
