Slam! Sports - New managerial hopeful for the Blue Jays

The lead starts wtih “New York Yankees executive Lee Mazzilli, who helped the 1989 Blue Jays win the AL East, would be an excellent candidate for the club’s vacant managerial position.” and then goes off in a crazy direction before coming back to Mazzilli’s candidacy.

Yea, that was....interesting.

The article also discusses Alan Trammell, Don Wakamatsu, and Jim Tracy.

Hopefully AA hires someone soon before journalists in Toronto link every last retired player, active coach, jobless manager, or just every last breathing person to the job.

I hope Lee would still wear a form fitted uniform like he did when playing.

Mazzilli as a manager was all hat, no cattle. Our recurring image of Maz back in the Birds in the Belfry days was a photo of Maz sitting on his hands on the bench, staring out at the field. Own coaches or not, he was a total joke as a manager. I'd love to see the Jays hire him, except I have a soft spot for Toronto since I lived and worked there for a year back in the early eighties.

I was a bit confused by the article...was he saying that two of the Orioles' coaches said THEY should have been fired? Now THAT'S candor!

That website looks like it's from 1996.

Tracy? They'd be better off with the rabbi. Or a different, randomly-selected rabbi, for that matter.

My friend's brother says he knows a guy that says it will be Manny Acta, and that it will be announced just before the winter meetings.

Hired, not fired. He's saying that two of the Orioles' coaches thought they should have been hired as the manager.

Hmm...more likely they should have been fired.

Rick Adair: "I should be fired. I've tried everything and Arrieta and Hunter still suck. Matusz was supposed to be the next Steve Avery and the only way he can contribute is as a lefty specialist. We were so lucky to pick up Saunders and that Mexican guy."

Robothal tweeting that the Blue Jays are closing in on Josh Johnson and Mark Buerhle
   13. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:23 PM (#4301809)
@Ken_Rosenthal

Inclusion of Reyes unconfirmed. What we know: Buerhle and Josh Johnson to #BlueJays. Escobar, Hechavarria to #Marlins. And more both ways.

   14. Poster Nutbag Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:27 PM (#4301819)
Wow! This is a ######' A trade!

This is great: Jon Morosi ?@jonmorosi

The shorthand of this deal is something like this: If you are earning a big salary with the Marlins, you are now a Blue Jay.
   15. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:29 PM (#4301821)
Reyes HAS to be included, right? Florida is getting two SS.
   16. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:33 PM (#4301826)
@jonmorosi

One source told me Johnson, Buehrle, Reyes, Buck and Bonifacio are all going to #BlueJays. I am working to confirm this.
   17. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:34 PM (#4301827)
Robothal confirms Reyes
   18. Greg K Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:34 PM (#4301828)
Hopefully this Jose Reyes character is better than Jo-Jo Reyes.
   19. Greg K Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:37 PM (#4301832)
Sweet Jesus! That's pretty much a whole team.
   20. Greg K Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:39 PM (#4301836)
Henderson Alvarez and Justin Nicolino also going to Miami.

I really like Nicolino, but this is exactly the kind of thing a chit like him should be used for.
   21. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:42 PM (#4301839)
This made me laugh:

@jonmorosi - John Buck's inclusion in the deal is mostly for cash purposes, since #BlueJays have an abundance of catching depth already.
   22. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:46 PM (#4301844)
Some guy named Jake Marisnick is also going to Florida.
   23. Greg K Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:48 PM (#4301846)
ooooh Marisnick is a real fan favourite.

That makes it less sweet...but still gets my enthusiastic thumbs up!
   24. Jose Remains The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:50 PM (#4301852)
The Marlins didn't wait too long to blow it up did they?
   25. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:53 PM (#4301854)
@jonmorosi - #Marlins opened season with a payroll of roughly $100MM. After this trade, non-arb 2013 obligations will be ~ $16MM. Historic salary dump.
   26. DA Baracus Posted: November 13, 2012 at 06:59 PM (#4301859)
LOL Marlins. What a joke of a franchise.

Solid young OF prospect, but I think Toronto's cashing him in at the right time, and they should be able to spare him.

Nice deal for AA, even if it's sad to see scavengers pick the Marlins' bones.

So Bell is in on this too I presume?

@Giancarlo818

Alright, I'm pissed off!!! Plain & Simple
   30. Jose Remains The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:01 PM (#4301864)
Bell got traded to Arizona (I think it was AZ) a few weeks ago.
   31. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:01 PM (#4301865)
Bell went to Arizona, remember?

EDIT: Coke.
   32. Bourbon Samurai is disturbed by bagel developments Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:01 PM (#4301866)
So the Jays get Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, Jeffrey Loria, Jeff Conine, Edgar Renteria, Don Johnson, and Dan Marino, in exchange for a bunch of prospecty guys?

Sounds like a plan. And a great time for the jays to strike with the Red Sox where they are and the yankees where they are.
   33. Poster Nutbag Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:04 PM (#4301867)
#29 - Why, because everyone else got to escape?
   34. Greg K Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:05 PM (#4301868)
#29 - Why, because everyone else got to escape?

Yeah the Jays are getting stiffed here. Stanton and Bautista in the same lineup would be fun.
   35. Poster Nutbag Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:06 PM (#4301869)
#32....should've tossed David Caruso in too.....missed a golden opportunity!
   36. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:06 PM (#4301870)
@jonmorosi

Source: #Marlins will get Jacob Marisnick or Anthony Gose, as well as a catcher -- Arencibia, Wilson or Mathis.
   37. Greg K Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:07 PM (#4301871)
Hmm, it would have to be Arencibia wouldn't it? I'm the first one to point out his flaws, but why would you want Bobby Wilson or Jeff Mathis?
   38. Poster Nutbag Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:08 PM (#4301873)
Yeah the Jays are getting stiffed here. Stanton and Bautista in the same lineup would be fun.

Seriously though....one HAS to wonder if AA said something like....."OK...so, what do we have to add to get that Stanton kid too?"...or if he didn't want to push his luck!
   39. Bourbon Samurai is disturbed by bagel developments Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:09 PM (#4301875)

I assume the Jays asked for him and Dexter, but the Marlins had to keep some dignity.

Marlins = clownshoes

Heck, throw in another $50k and I bet Loria will give the Jays Florida's two World Series titles, too.
   42. JJ1986 Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:14 PM (#4301885)
Hmm, it would have to be Arencibia wouldn't it? I'm the first one to point out his flaws, but why would you want Bobby Wilson or Jeff Mathis?

It would be much funnier if it was Mathis.
   43. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:28 PM (#4301905)
btw 11.5 million of the 16 million the Marlins have committed for 2013 right now goes to Ricky Nolasco. Yunel bumps it up to 21 million.

This doesn't include whatever they're still paying Heath Bell.
   44. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 13, 2012 at 07:28 PM (#4301906)
?@Ken_Rosenthal

Asked official with one of clubs if he has any concern that commissioner might kill the deal. His response: "None at all."
   45. Poster Nutbag Posted: November 13, 2012 at 08:27 PM (#4301975)

IT ####### IS!!!!!! This is AWESOME!

Back to the main topic of this thread: who's the top target for the managerial search? Matt Williams? Sandy Alomar Jr? DeMarlo Hale?
   47. Voros McCracken of Pinkus Posted: November 14, 2012 at 12:33 AM (#4302156)
Ozzie Guillen.
