SNY - Mets reportedly considering reunion with Lucas Duda

The Mets are considering a reunion with free agent 1B Lucas Duda, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Duda, 31, was traded by the Mets to the Rays last July 27 in exchange for RH reliever Drew Smith. He hit .217/.322/.496 with 30 HR in 126 games last season with the Mets and Rays

For his career—which has been spent enitrely with the Mets aside from the last two months of the 2017 season—Duda has hit .242/.340/.457 with 138 HR in eight seasons.

The Mets are reportedly in agreement with OF/1B Jay Bruce on a three-year deal that will pay him $39 million, and have told Bruce to expect to play some first base.

They also have 22-year-old 1B Dominic Smith, who hit .198/.262/.395 in 49 games in 2017 during what was his first taste of the majors.

As Baseball Crank joked on Twitter, the only players the 2018 Mets can afford to sign are the members of the 2017 Mets.

I appreciate Sandy Alderson's steady hand after decades of flamboyantly stupid leadership, but it's always seemed like there's been something profoundly lazy about his approach.

100% don't get this, with Smith on hand, and Bruce now back on board.

Concur. It only makes sense if they think Conforto is going to miss a lot more time than projected.

They're putting the band back together!

sure, they'd listen if Todd Zeile called

Benny Agbayani is available

Bonilla is still on payroll.

Hell, they have Bobby Bo's info current in the payroll system.

Perhaps the plan is to trade Duda again?
   12. BDC Posted: January 13, 2018 at 03:26 PM (#5605972)
From the headline, though, it just seems like they're going to hoist a few with Duda and ask him how the heck things have been.

Getting the band back together is one thing but when the band is Herman's Hermits ...
   14. Walt Davis Posted: January 13, 2018 at 03:51 PM (#5605988)
Maybe they don't think much of Smith ... or maybe (unlikely cuz it's the Mets) there's a trade in the works that involves Smith.
   15. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: January 13, 2018 at 05:15 PM (#5606022)
For this to make sense, they must think that Conforto is going to be out for a while and that Smith isn't ready or good enough yet to provide decent production while Conforto recovers.

I like Duda who has played well despite being jerked around by the Mets. I would rather spend the money on a 2b or 3b but who knows what Alderson is thinking of.
   16. Bug Selig Posted: January 13, 2018 at 05:23 PM (#5606025)
Thank goodness they went out and signed the inferior and (probably) more expensive Jay Bruce specifically so this wouldn't make sense.

Have the Mets' really been better managed under Alderson than Minaya? Also, we never really talked about Minaya returning to the Mets organization.
   18. formerly dp Posted: January 13, 2018 at 05:32 PM (#5606034)
I don't dislike Duda, and if he'll come cheap enough, it's not a bad move. But in my mind, they've got to start getting some production from the position players the farm is coughing up, and they can't do that with decently-compensated vets on the team. I don't hate the Bruce signing in isolation either--but there's next to no chance Nimmo will be able to unseat him as a regular once Conforto comes back. Same with Duda/Smith.

I doubt they'd be in on Moose, and don't live Frazier, so I'm OK with a Flores/Cabrera/Rivera/Reyes Frankenstein for 2b/3b. Or I guess I'm resigned to it, at this point.

Reed ended up getting just about what they're paying to Swarzak. Urg.

Imo the biggest move they've made all winter is getting their aaa team tfo of Vegas.
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: January 13, 2018 at 05:33 PM (#5606035)
With deepest apologies to Stephen Foster:

Metstown crazies sing this song,
Duda, Duda
Metstown's season's six months long,
Oh, de Duda day

Goin' to play all night
Goin' to play all day
I bet my money on the home-team wag
Somebody bet on the gray

Reed reportedly would only sign with a Midwestern team, which explains the lower contract, and obviously means he wasn't an option for the Mets.
   21. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: January 13, 2018 at 05:59 PM (#5606046)
Jose Reyes isn't officially a Met right now, is he? Isn't he a free agent?
   22. formerly dp Posted: January 13, 2018 at 06:09 PM (#5606049)
Hadn't read that about Reed. Earlier in the offseason saw that they assumed he'd be priced out of their range.

Reyes: no one's banging down his door to sign him, seems like the Mets are waiting to see if a better option presents itself before pulling the trigger. Has expressed a pref for coming back. And hit decently well last year once he got going.

"I have been wrong about literally everything ever."

Or--wait. Maybe that wasn't a joke.
   24. Dog on the sidewalk Posted: January 13, 2018 at 11:24 PM (#5606162)
Alderson has decided that Duda is insufficiently old and broken, signs Adrian Gonzalez instead.
   25. Howie Menckel Posted: January 13, 2018 at 11:59 PM (#5606168)
sure, they'd listen if the rotting corpse of Adrian Gonzalez called

   26. The Yankee Clapper Posted: January 14, 2018 at 01:30 AM (#5606180)
I assumed #24 & 25 were jokes, but I now see Gonzalez -> Mets reported elsewhere. So, no Duda reunion? That'd be too much even for the Mets. All that effort on #19 (at least two minutes) wasted! Oh well, maybe they'll sign him next year, when he's a little more seasoned.
   27. Dog on the sidewalk Posted: January 14, 2018 at 01:44 AM (#5606182)
I don't actually object to Gonzalez. He's basically free, and Dom Smith shouldn't be guaranteed anything. He's probably toast, but there's no harm in bringing him in to confirm it. Similarly, I wouldn't have objected to Duda, either, assuming he came in on a 1 year deal. The guy has always hit.

It's not an inspiring move, but given their current options, the shitty FA market, the team's unwillingness to spend, and the lack of prospects to trade, you take what you can get. Sign more aging, positionless bats to short term deals, I say!

Not sure. What I mean is that it's nice that we finally don't have a GM that's obsessed with winning the winter back page battle.

SNY - Mets Reportedly Targeting Bartolo Colon

At last, a target even the Mets would find hard to miss!

Hard to say--Minaya had Madoff money to spend on high-end items. On the other hand, he did leave the farm in good shape.

I think Minaya is a good scout, and a shitty GM. If he's your director of scouting, that's probably a good thing.

Maybe Beltran can be lured out of retirement or even Keith Hernandez if they are looking for “veteran LH presence” at 1B

Nah, not if you want Veteran Presence. Krane will always be that 17-year old kid from da Bronx with a glorious future ahead of him.

Sometime. Maybe next year.
