SNY: Berg: There’s something happening here…Why Mets have improved ain’t exactly clear

There’s a man with a Juggs gun over there on Petey
Telling me I got to beware

But could it be as simple as a managerial change? Color me dubious. There’s no question that Manuel has changed the attitude and dialogue around the Mets, and it’s impossible to place a value on that. But to even suggest that Delgado was purposefully tanking it under Willie Randolph is as offensive to Delgado as it is patently absurd. No Major League Baseball player tanks it, ever. It just doesn’t happen. You don’t get to the Major Leagues with that attitude, or anywhere close. Players get paid in part for the statistics they produce, and no player anywhere doesn’t want to be the best they can possibly be. So stop that talk. Maybe the change in atmosphere under Manuel aided Delgado, but more likely, it’s a simple case of the logical fallacy known as “post hoc ergo propter hoc,” meaning “after this, therefore because of this.”

...I’m not here to say the Mets would have won like they have since June 17 if Willie Randolph were still managing and Rick Peterson were still preaching Zen tactics to impatient young pitchers. But I think chalking the entire turnaround to the coming of the Manuel administration does little service to the Mets team that most picked to win the division coming into the season. It’s a good club in a weak division, and it’s simply playing the way it should be playing.

But it ain’t over yet.

That would be nice if we didn't know specifically that changes were made to Perez' pitching. Immediately.

Apparently, someone has never heard of Operation Shutdown.

Ryan, I got a good two minutes of serious laughter out of that one.

Why Mets have improved

Taking a slightly more global view of things, on this date last year the Mets were 78-60. Now, they are 79-61. They've been on a great run recently to get there, of course.

Bob, yep, and last year we were looking really good on this day too. The difference between last year and this year will be judged this weekend. Remember how we "rebounded" after that horrible sweep by the Phils in late August by sweeping Atl (in turner field no less) and had that nice winning streak that put us those fabled 7 games up in mid-September.

Then came the collapse.

This year, this weekend will be huge. Win big this weekend and that will show that this team is not the same as last year. Lose big this weekend (my god if we get swept), and the story about last year takes front and center position.

Did anybody honestly think the Mets weren't simply underperforming under Willie Randolph this season? Whether or not he's directly attributable for the underperformance is certainly up for debate, but people tended to create absurd data points when this team was down, either by dumping wins, or overlapping particularly poor stretches between seasons, in order to "prove" that the Mets really weren't all that good to begin with. With Randolph gone, and the Mets playing well, all of a sudden that narrative has lost its traction, and people are searching for an answer to a question that shouldn't exist.

What changed the Mets from a mediocre team to a good one? Easy, nothing. They were never a mediocre team to begin with.
