So Who Do The Indians Protect?

The Indians 40-man roster is currently at 35 players after Juan Rincon, Scott Elarton and Brendan Donnelly filed for free agency. Sal Fasano is expected to file for free agency in the coming days, which should reduce the roster to 34 players.

The question remains, will anyone else be removed from the roster and will the Indians use all 40 spots to protect players in their minor league system. Eddie Mujica, Tom Mastny, and Andy Marte look like the best options to be removed, but Mastny still has options and has value as a depth reliever so it is very unlikely he is removed. Also, the Indians lost players like Brad Snyder, Brian Bullington, and Reid Santos when trying to sneak them through waivers, and Brian Slocum cleared waivers when he was removed. This was all done over a week ago, which to me implies the roster purge may be over and that everyone that is not a free agent stays on it.

Anyway, when whittling down the Indians 2008 Rule 5 eligibles for consideration to be rostered, here is a listing of the players to pay special attention to and who is lost likely to be rostered to fill the five to seven open spots available before the November 20th deadline, from a lock (100%) to doubtful (25%).

An interesting (IMO) take on the roster decisions Cleveland faces this offseason.

How is Rondon not in the 100% pile?

The author seems to think that he might get squeezed out by sheer numbers.

Personally, I'd be shocked if he's not protected.

With 5 to 7 spots available, 3 guys at 100% locks and another 3 at 75%, it's statistically impossible for the next 8 to have a 50% chance. I know it's not really a statistics article, but why apply statistics incorrectly to a non-statistics article in the first place?

Scott Elarton is still in the bigs?

Elarton pitched for about a month and a half in the minors, had his contract purchased, pitched for about a month in the majors and then was put on the restricted list. A week later, he was reinstated from the restricted list and put on the DL for "Non-baseball reasons." I couldn't find out what the story was at the time and soon lost interest. I'm all ears if anybody else knows.

Anyway, the Indians just picked up Dan Meyer off waivers from Oakland, so that's one less seat at the table for the prospects in TFA.

The one good player the A's got in that trade they didn't keep. (And I don't mean Dan Meyer.) Ah well.

Surely you don't mean Charles Thomas?

Sorry. That's what mlb.com said at 4:20 Virgin Islands Time. It says Florida now. Didn't really make sense, Cleveland has better options in the bullpen and the only expensive ones are under contract.
