From the other thread.

####### chatwood.

Dodgers have Muncy playing second.

Sometimes it seems like the dodgers consider defense as a secondary concern. Not saying they're wrong or right, but they're more comfortable trying things.

Not watching the game, is Chatwood unable to find the strike zone, or is he a guy that nibbles/is afraid to throw strikes? Why does he walk so many guys?

Yes.

Why oh why does MLB.tv not show you any game information whatsoever in the browser anymore when you are listening on the radio??

Good question. Seems like they decided to downgrade their features this year -- maybe it's a bandwidth thing.

We'll see how this one works out. They have guys in Taylor, Hernandez and Barnes who can legitimately play multiple positions, and I haven't seen Bellinger in center hurting thrm much. Saturday i could count five above-average def3nsive plays. Not sure if the fielding metrics would concur.

Be interesting how the managers use their pens this afternoon.

Maybe they're going the airline route and are "unbundling" the game info. You want a running box score? That'll be $5.

Tyler Chatwood has given up 4 walks and a home run in 2 innings. He has given up 1 run.

Happ has a lot of tools/skills. However, he does not have a good arm.

Tyler Chatwood has given up 4 walks and a home run in 2 innings. He has given up 1 run.

That's his season in a nutshell. Coming into today, 63.1IP, 58 walks, 3 HRs, 30 runs (only 1 unearned). It doesn't make sense, and it's brutal to watch.
   17. Meatwad Posted: June 19, 2018 at 02:13 PM (#5695387)
How does chatwood only have 40 pitches through 3?
   18. perros Posted: June 19, 2018 at 02:14 PM (#5695389)
Lake Michigan is beautiful in June.
   19. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: June 19, 2018 at 02:16 PM (#5695392)
It's gotta be annoying to watch him walk all those guys but it's gotta be pretty awesome to see him escape all of those jams every time. He has been a lucky SOB thus far.
   20. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 02:24 PM (#5695406)
It's pretty awesome to watch the Cubs defense, which is arguably the best in baseball. There's nothing awesome about watching anything to do with Chatwood.
   21. perros Posted: June 19, 2018 at 02:24 PM (#5695407)

it's brutal to watch.

Maeda is doubling our viewing pleasure.

Kris Bryant winces.
   23. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 02:28 PM (#5695414)
There's the real downside of having Chatwood's control. Looks like it got all helmet though.
   24. perros Posted: June 19, 2018 at 02:34 PM (#5695424)
Joc Pederson looks like a nine year old and acts like one, too.

Cubs have been clutch today, which has been their apparent Achilles heel all season.

Starts with 5+ walks this season

9 Tyler Chatwood
4 Carlos Martínez
4 Lance Lynn
3 Lucas Giolito
   27. perros Posted: June 19, 2018 at 03:00 PM (#5695444)
Chatwood working on his third elbow ligament might have something to do with it.
   28. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 03:04 PM (#5695445)
Kemp and Roberts tossed. Looks like Turner had a legit gripe, Kemps were in the box.
   29. perros Posted: June 19, 2018 at 03:06 PM (#5695449)
Kemp with the hat trick on ejections this season. I think the Dodgers are just frustrated they've put up zeros after the leadoff HR.

Like many teams, they're very dependent upon the HR to generate runs.
   30. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 03:28 PM (#5695467)
Well, that's some good luck for the Dodgers. Weird bounce off the wall turns Taylor's double into a triple. Wind help Puig get a double instead of a popout.

Tyler Chatwood's 9 starts with 5+ walks is most in a season by a #Cubs pitcher since Dick Drott (13) in 1957.... and we're still not out of June yet.

Dick Drott.
   32. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 19, 2018 at 03:47 PM (#5695478)
Surprised Dick Drott was still around in 1957. I thought they eradicated it shortly after penicillin was discovered.
   33. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 03:52 PM (#5695484)
Poor control is obviously a symptom of Dick Drott.
   34. perros Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:12 PM (#5695498)
Cubs pitching has issued seven walks. None have scored.

   36. perros Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:30 PM (#5695512)
Dodgers have used six pitchers. My guess is they'll shuttle one or two to OKC after this game.
   37. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:32 PM (#5695514)
Wilson for the save? Ok, buckle up
   38. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:32 PM (#5695515)
You don't think Rich Hill can throw a complete game later?
   39. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:37 PM (#5695519)
Ball 1 to Turner was the same pitch that was called strike 3 on him earlier, and wider ones have been strikes. I think his ######## on the other calls (including strike 2, a clear strike), helped him out there.
   40. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:39 PM (#5695521)
Wait, why is Wilson pitching here? Is Morrow being saved for a potential save situation in the second game?
   41. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:39 PM (#5695522)
That was a strike, Grandal.

That's why they do it.
   47. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:46 PM (#5695535)
Seriously...was there any reason for Wilson to be pitching there? Unless one of those "things Joe knows that we don't" is that Morrow is unavailable all day today, that seems downright Showalterian. Am I missing something?
   48. perros Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:48 PM (#5695536)

I still haven't forgiven Roberts for lifting Hill in Game 2.

Awesome.
   50. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:54 PM (#5695544)
I'm guessing Morrow has to be unavailable for a reason, there's no other explanation.

I'm fine, in theory, of trying Wilson out in higher leverage situations. Not sure I'd pick a 1 run game against the middle of the Dodgers lineup though.
   51. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:54 PM (#5695545)
Well, that was really Giants-esque by the Cubs.
Keep up the good work !

   53. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:54 PM (#5695549)
The Cubs still had plenty of chances to get more runs, that 8th inning hurt.

If he pitches later tonight, I'm going to...well, I'm going to write mean things about Joe Maddon on the internet, that's what I'm gonna do.
   55. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 19, 2018 at 04:58 PM (#5695554)
there's no other explanation.
As much as we both wish "Morrow could only pitch once today, and maybe we would need him for a save in the second game" would not possibly be an explanation for a major league manager, there is ample evidence that that isn't the case.
   56. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 05:01 PM (#5695559)
This one is on joe. No way wilson should have been in there.

If Morrow couldn't go - and I'll assume that until we know otherwise - there wasn't another option since Cishek and Strop already went. They miss Edwards right there.

As much as we both wish "Morrow could only pitch once today, and maybe we would need him for a save in the second game" would not possibly be an explanation for a major league manager, there is ample evidence that that isn't the case.

I'll just agree to disagree on that one, unless another explanation comes out.

I'll just agree to disagree on that one, unless another explanation comes out.
I'm not saying that I'm assuming that was Joe's thought process - just that it's sadly possible, based on what we've seen from managers. It will only be confirmed if Morrow does indeed pitch tonight.
   58. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 05:24 PM (#5695576)
After Game 1 loss, Joe Maddon says #Cubs closer Brandon Morrow (stiff back) is unavailable for today's doubleheader vs. #Dodgers: "Otherwise, he would have been pitching in the ninth."

See? It's swung too far in the other direction. Joe's not infallible, but maybe we're all just too quick to assume the worst.

Hancock added for the second game.
   59. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 19, 2018 at 05:25 PM (#5695578)
It's the Internet. Everyone here is smarter than whatever manager happens to have done a thing that didn't work out. Just ask'em.
   60. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 19, 2018 at 05:26 PM (#5695580)
Fwiw

With Brandon Morrow unavailable, Carl Edwards Jr. on the DL, Justin Wilson, was EXACTLY who should have been pitching.

He had allowed ONE earned run since MAY 1 before the ninth.

It's not "fair" to be pissed at Wilson (or Maddon). He had been very, very good lately. With a 36% strikeout rate during that stretch and almost no hard contact (21.6%) to speak of.

Don't work off old news. Wilson has been solid lately. Sometimes, hitters hit.

RP are fickle.

Fair enough, but I wasn't assuming anything. Just saying that there better be an explanation, which it turns out there was. We don't have to assume the explanation is there, do we?

It had been a long time since I'd heard the expression "Too cute by half" until Cubs commenters here used it regularly and with gusto the last year or so in regards to Joe Maddon.

From the "It couldn't happen to a nicer guy" desk:

Alex Pavlovic @PavlovicNBCS
Hunter Strickland punched a door after coming out of game last night. He fractured his pitching hand and is having surgery. Out at least six to eight weeks.

Background: last night the Marlins were down 4-2 when Strickland came on to "close" in the top of the 9th inning. He walked Brian Anderson, then Realmuto doubled him home to make it 4-3 Giants. Then he walked Bour. Maybin grounded into a force out for the first out of the inning to advance Realmuto to 3B.

Then Lewis Brinson singled home Realmuto to tie the game and I guess was smiling and maybe whooping it up a bit too much on his way to 1B for Strickland's liking; I was listening on the radio so not sure what he did.

After Miguel Rojas singled home Maybin for the go-ahead run they yanked Strickland, who took the long way home so that he could heckle the Marlins on his way to his own dugout.

This guy has issues.

   79. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 19, 2018 at 08:12 PM (#5695666)
There is no reason to punch Strickland in the nuts like this. Of course he is angry after losing like that. And of course it sucks, that he does something like punch a door. But he just isn't that great, and Bochy says ... 'Those few who have real talent, they don't need coaching. But the rest, the 90% do.'. And Strickland has improved this season, better change-up/slider.
But I guess you can't really coach emotion, so throw the first stone if you will, but I hope you injure yourself.

But don't throw the helmet like Bryce Harper.

Mark Zuckerman @MarkZuckerman
Trea Turner just became the first Nationals player not named Juan Soto to hit a home run in the last 10 days. Solo shot to LF gives them a 1-0 lead.

To quote former Nats GM Jim Bowden: "Pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching..."

Of course, when you don't have that and you don't score runs...
