Average age of tonight's starting Yankees lineup, including Germán and Stanton: 25.

Who the #### needs Bryce Harper?

Now please, please, NY gentlemen... please leave a litte room for the Red Sucks and Chicago Cubs fans to utter their utter displeasure of the current gameday ongoings.
   103. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 19, 2018 at 08:46 PM (#5695699)
Apparently Pirates reliever Steven Brault sang the National Anthem before their game today. The Parade of Anonymous Relievers has definitely gone too far.

Then Lewis Brinson singled home Realmuto to tie the game and I guess was smiling and maybe whooping it up a bit too much on his way to 1B for Strickland's liking; I was listening on the radio so not sure what he did.

Started before yesterday:

Brinson’s first big hit was a game-tying rip against Madison Bumgarner last week in a 7-5 Marlins win, something that typically warrants celebration. The Giants weren’t happy about this, so on Monday night Strickland threw the first pitch to Brinson in the ninth inning right in the vicinity of his chin. Brinson tied the game again when he laced a single off Strickland and flipped his bat on his way to first.

rain, hail, possible tornado in Denver.

this is why the Mets can't have 3-game winning streaks

BREAKING: Bryce Harper hit the ball safely. REPEAT: Bryce Harper hit the ball safely.

OK, he shanked a high and tight fastball for a bloop hit into LF, but it did tie the game. So maybe they won't bench him after all.

Brinson was also the guy who killed John F. Kennedy and stole the Lindbergh baby. When Strickland has recovered, that Brinson dude, should really just fall down and play dead in the batter's box. IMHO

Can we be certain that The Baseball Gods are not simply punishing the Mets for being the Mets???

No one in the Yankees' starting lineup is getting traded.

They have plenty of good, but not great, prospects to go get the #3 SP they need.

Surprised Dick Drott was still around in 1957. I thought they eradicated it shortly after penicillin was discovered.

The dreaded Stubby Clapp was still around in 2001.

not to mention that 1980s Tigers OFer

Mets-Rockies rain delay ends shortly. Mets channel showing mid-1970s highlights of that bubble-gum blowing competition won by Kurt Bevacqua (who got a Topps card out of it). Mets entrants were Ed Kranepool, Bobby Valentine, and Lenny Randle.

the forceps-like device used to measure the circumference of the bubbles was amusing.

I see Bobby V won, with Kranepool supplying the obligatory joke about him being "full of hot air."

   131. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: June 19, 2018 at 10:14 PM (#5695764)
Another stellar start for Montgomery, another night of putrid run support. In his 5 starts (30 IP), the Cubs have scored exactly 5 runs while he was the pitcher of record. He has left games leading 1-0, tied 1-1, leading 3-1, losing 0-1, losing 0-1.

This can't last.
   133. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: June 19, 2018 at 10:16 PM (#5695767)
And right on cue, they score after he leaves the game. At least he won't get hung with another 1-0 loss.
   134. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: June 19, 2018 at 10:17 PM (#5695768)
Wow. The Orioles and the Nationals each put on a clinic on what not to do when running the bases. Ultimately, the better team prevailed, but it wasn't a given the way things were going. See-saw score until the Nats had had just about enough and piled on to stay on top for good. So ends this meeting in the B-W Parkway series.

yet again, the man gets no run support. Sales line:

7IP 3H, 2ER, 11K. I'll take that every time and twice on Tuesdays, but when the bats run quiet, not much a bloke can do but keep it close and hope the Sox can score with 2 innings left.
   141. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 19, 2018 at 10:41 PM (#5695791)
Whoa, what's this? The black hole that is the bottom of the Red Sox lineup manages to scratch out a run and tie the game.

Unfortunately the "rally" was snuffed out by the strongest negative force in the MLB universe, JBJ's bat.

Nolan Arenado parks one 20 rows deep in the left field stands to put the Rox up 4-2 over the Mets. Trevor Story follows with another in the same place to make it 5-2. Did you guys know Trevor Story is leading the league in RBIs?

Hold on, folks: Ian Desmond hits the Rockies' third homer in a row to make it 6-2.

The Rockies announcers were interviewing Jeff Francis during the game, leading to this funny moment:

Drew Goodman: How were you able to master Coors Field?
Jeff Francis: MASTER it? Are you kidding?

MLB Network tells me that the 30 games of 1-0 this year are more than all of last year. huh.

then I see Schwarber strike out, and wonder about his career OPS+ so far:

2015 - 130 in 273 PA, intriguing as an OF-C
2016 - only got 5 PA
2017 - 98 in 486 PA
2018 - 120 in 238 PA

I was going to say that if he can't manage a 120 OPS+, he's "just a guy."
so he's right on that fence.

just turned 25 in March. ok, not consigning him to the dustbin of history just yet

Unfortunately the "rally" was snuffed out by the strongest negative force in the MLB universe, JBJ's bat

If the Yankees prevail over the Red Sox this season, the better bottom half of the batting order will likely be a big part of it. From the commentary here, it seems unlikely that Boston has the chips to do much on the trade front, so they'll have to hope for a better second half.

EDIT: Just as I post that, Bradley boots one in the outfield, turning a single into a double.

Bradley just made a great throw from CF. Runner didn't dog it from 3rd but maybe he could have been a little faster. Might have assumed the depth was enough for anyone to score. Plays like that will get the Red Sox hitting coach fired if Bradley doesn't pick it up at the plate.
   153. Howie Menckel Posted: June 19, 2018 at 11:17 PM (#5695819)
my Mets pal who tweets is back in full lather:

In a season filled with bad innings left and right, this bottom of the third tonight has been the worst. God awful pitching, putrid fielding, bad attitude and the vacant stare of a horseshit manager. With that goes the winning streak that got a lot of Met fans excited.

Vargas seven earned runs in 2 1/3 innngs and nine hits. Don’t give me the Coors Field excuse because every ball was blasted. He’s putrid. And I’ll bow to my friend Joey Wahler who has always said Robles was awful. Joey was right. I was wrong. Robles blows.

This just in: Jason Vargas blows. He blows bad. We don't need to see anymore of his raccoon lookalike stare as balls continue to fly out of the ballpark. Again, who was the genius who thought he was a good signing? Sandy? Gee thanks. Three homers in a row is outstanding. BLOWS!

This just in: Amed Rosario is just not as good as we were hyped up to possibly believe. He doesn’t hit a lick and if he doesn’t make an easy defensive play, then he shouldn’t play at all.

(and from Friday)

I was waiting in the post game presser for Callaway to say “grinding” but he kept saying “plugging away.” And then he let it slip. He said “Grinding!” What a moron! How did we get him? Who did their homework in the interview process?

This just in: Paul Sewald blows. No other words other than he couldn’t get people out in Binghamton right now. Just a bad pitcher. I can’t believe the Mets can’t find someone better than him. Right now I’d sign Ricky Bones. He has to be better. Get him out there.

This just in: Keeping with their tradition of signing washed up former stars, the Mets have signed the head of Ted Williams, kept on ice somewhere in Arizona. The head of Ted will bat third and play left field tomorrow and has more leg strength right now than Cespedes.

This just in: Jacob Rhame blows. We got him and a box of balls last year and half of those balls were sent flying out of the joint. I don’t know what a Rhame does except that he blows and blows bad. Oops there goes another homer. Boom! Boom!

If the Yankees prevail over the Red Sox this season, the better bottom half of the batting order will likely be a big part of it.

It's ironic but pleasantly so that the Yankees' most reliable clutch hitters have been a pair of rookies hitting at the bottom of the lineup. Tonight was but the latest example of this.

It's also a joy to see that having Montgomery and Tanaka go down has (so far) not hurt the Yanks' starting rotation, which for June has the AL's best ERA. Germán's been getting better and better, and I'm looking forward to seeing Loaisiga's second start tomorrow.

just caught up to the feigned outrage by Bochy after MIA's Straily hits Posey and gets ejected. poor Bochy just has 25 guys who "play the game the right way" like Strickland, and here comes the other team to get in the way.

probably plays well in SF and in the dugout, so I get it - but he still looks like a doofus to everyone else.
meanwhile, Verducci on MLB Network notes that SF's Rodriguez obviously threw at Brinson earlier due to last night's issues, which should have led to an ejection. it didn't, so it escalated - to Bochy's strategic benefit, even though his team is the headhunters again.

(to be fair, Straily broke Longoria's hand with a HBP last week - but nobody thought that was intentional).

I see Kole Calhoun is back. Looks like the DL-stint did him good. 3 hits in his last 2 games, including a HR! He only had 2 hits in the 13 games prior to his DL stint.
