Soccer Out of Context: The AL East

If baseball were to follow soccer, here’s a look at how the uniforms might appear.

These are awesome. I kinda want an Orioles one and I don't even like the Orioles.

Dibs on the Toronto uni... those things are sharp. Nike, Adidas or whoever has the exclusive MLB license should make these.

Those are great. I don't love the first Orioles jersey, but the second version is a lot better.

Only if you're not hauling a gut from over-eating over the holidays. The tight cut of the unis and the vertical pinstripes will not be forgiving.

If soccer teams insist on putting advertising on their unis, why do they make them so damn small?

If you're going to sell out, go big. Look at NASCAR.

The suggestion that the Yankees would be above a corporate sponsor on the jersey if every other team was doing it was quite laughable. I can't think of any other team that plays a sponsor sound when an opposing hitter strikes out. And the visage of NYS isn't exactly light on paid signage.

Thirding on that Toronto jersey, they should consider it for their actual uniform. That's just incredibly sharp.

The second O's jersey is solid, too.

ETA: The Cardinal jersey is a travesty, though. The Reds are also poorly used.

Maybe he's just getting better with practice but I think the NL Central as a group is a step up from the AL East. The Jays and Orioles (ver. 2.0) were great but the rest were just OK. I think all of the NL Central were good except the Cubs and the Reds' threw me simply by having the name of a rival star on the front.

I think the Pirates, Cardinals and Brewers are all better than his AL East efforts.

I prefer the font of the numerals on these Yankee uniforms to those on the actual Yankee uniforms.

The crests/badges should be more like coats of arms. In general, a baseball cap logo is smaller than a football helmet logo so the cap logo is usually simpler. I realize that soccer shirt logos are probably even smaller than baseball cap logos, but that's the tradition. I would have liked to see him create more soccer-like chest logos, like the one for his second attempt at the Orioles.

Agreed. It's harsh to complain about something done just for fun (and for free), but most of the logos he chose don't really work as crests for a soccer shirt.

Boston's crest should be something along the lines of the socks and baseball enclosed in the circle with their name, as seen here. That's much more soccery.

I could see this a potential new revenue source interchangeably between baseball, hockey and soccer - Yankees hockey sweaters and soccer jerseys, Canadiens baseball and soccer jerseys, Barcelona for baseball and hockey. It doesn't quite work as well for basketball and football. Judging from the response here, a well-designed, licensed MLB soccer shirt would sell quite well. If it's a good design, I'd like a cotton baseball jersey.

The second Orioles one is great - definitely would rock that as a workout shirt.

The Calvert crest is such a no brainer for this, I can't believe he missed it the first time.

He might be able to produce and sell some of these shirts with some tweaks to avoid using MLB property (although I guess the corporate logos have to go too, and those are pretty integral).

I like the style but I just can't bring myself to voluntarily wear corporate branding. If they want me to be a walking billboard they should pay me to wear the shirt. If MLB ever goes to sponsorship on the jerseys I will be very sad about it.

Agreed. I want to see Papelbon kiss the crest on his jersey after striking out the side at the end of a close game.

I dunno, if the O's are going to be a UPS affiliate they need more brown in the uniform :)

Also, I hope the Reds sign Ryan Braun when they adopt the new look.

Given the FSG took Warrior's money to dress Liverpool in this...thing, it seems hard to believe they'd pass up sponsor bucks.

These are fantastic. Agreed on the Blue Jays perfection, but also really dig the Brewers.
