We look confident in the attack. More than I recall.

This is the most action I've seen from a Nats game in a long time. Weird that it's coming from a team with 4 holding mids!
1203. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 26, 2012 at 08:44 PM (#4140945)
That was a nifty little play by Torres, too bad he missed it.
1204. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 26, 2012 at 08:52 PM (#4140946)
After a busy first 15 minutes things have slowed down quite a bit.
1205. FancyPantsHandle glistening with foreign substance Posted: May 26, 2012 at 08:59 PM (#4140951)
Somebody should tell the US this is a friendly.
1206. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:03 PM (#4140957)
Nifty little play from Boyd there.
1207. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:27 PM (#4140976)
I'm guessing Gomez or Wondo will be the first sub in for the US.

Ah, Jermain Jones has that continental lookin for the penalty style!
1208. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:28 PM (#4140977)
Yeah, that was a yellow card worthy dive.

Ooh that was great by Donovan

Great layoff by Torres to set it up.
1211. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:30 PM (#4140980)
They've looked very good together.
1212. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:31 PM (#4140981)
I'm really enjoying how intelligent the movement is with this lineup. I think I'd almost want to keep the set up but replace Boyd with Dempsey against Brazil.
1213. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:33 PM (#4140982)
Boyd needs to be quicker mentally in the box, he waits too long to make things happen.

Boyd needs to be quicker mentally in the box, he waits too long to make things happen.

yeah, he's just a step too slow right now. He gets into good positions, though.
1215. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:37 PM (#4140986)
US always seems to have a bunch of people on the end of the box and they re using that well. Some nice short passes setting up balls wide or toward goal.
1216. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:38 PM (#4140988)
That was very nice movement to set that one up.
1217. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:38 PM (#4140989)
Man, US really dominating this half and it finally pays off. They look so confident tonight.
1218. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:41 PM (#4140992)
I never understand why teams in that situation dont pass the ball about 5-10 yards back to give the shooter a bit more room to get over the wall.
1219. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: May 26, 2012 at 09:42 PM (#4140993)
White guy dreadlock guy is in! And I'm sort of right about Gomez being first sub in...

As Scotland is the country I'm most likely to emigrate to, this is kind of depressing as well as the US has played. It's no good that Scotland are so down right now. I blame the Old Firm.

My ginger cat named Angus weirdly looks very upset right now. I wonder if he thinks he's Scottish?

If the Scots in attendance aren't well and truly drunk at this point it's a mistake.

Kenny Miller is Scotland's all time scoring leader? That can't be right, can it?

edit: NBC needs google. Kenny Dalglish and Denis Law are Scotland's all-time leading goal scorers, which makes a lot more sense.
1237. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 26, 2012 at 10:06 PM (#4141031)
Three spare thoughts;

1. Klinsy's tactics worked well. The US had the right set up for this one seemingly always having the Scots outnumbered.

2. I liked the way they played together, the US seemed to always know where help was whether defensively or offensively.

3. Not that there was a lot of opportunity but they handled the free kick poorly leading to the goal. Probably the only complaint of the night and tht will be a bigger issue against better teams.

It definitely showed that we had our most intelligent players out there, bar Dempsey. Brazil, of course, will be another test altogether, though they're playing a very young team with an eye on the Olympics.

Loved the jerseys except for the numbers.

1249. DA Baracus is gritty and hits with RISP Posted: May 27, 2012 at 04:03 PM (#4141301)
They've played teams that bad and struggled to score. In the previous ten games under Klinsnmann, the US had scored nine times, and more than 1 goal only once. To score 5 without Dempsey and Altidore is great. Brazil should run circles around them, but this was the first time in a while they've dominated a team they should dominate.
   1250. Flynn Posted: May 27, 2012 at 04:15 PM (#4141317)
I don't think anybody here is under any impression Scotland is good. In fact, your average Yank is probably even less impressed, since they won't remember when Scotland ran out Souness, Dalglish, Jordan and Gemmill in the same team.

It's just that the USA hardly ever beats up on anybody, much less a team with at least a couple semi-recognizable players.

I'm surprised so many like the shirts.
The last time I recall a USMNT looking so fluid was the U-23's in their friendly vs. Mexico, prior to Olympic qualifying. I hope the Sr. Nats fare better, as the (Sr.) Nats' performance was good to see.

Arrests today in the Calcioscomesse scandal:

Lazio's captain Mauri has been arrested along with Genoa's former captain Milanetto, the Sampdoria centre forward Bertani, several Serie B players and a number of "international criminals".

Juve manager Antonio Conte has had his computer and phone seized and has been placed under investigation for acts related to his time at Siena. Domenico Criscito, formerly of Genoa and now at Zenit St. Petersburg, is also under formal investigation and has been told by the FIGC that he will not be selected for the Euros (Criscito was at the Azzurri's pre-Euro training camp when visited by the police).

Unusual header goal to give the 10-man Colorado Rapids a 3-2 lead over Montreal. I've never seen the ball bounce twice on the crossbar.

Also, listen for the whistle and look at the ref...the ref actually blew the whistle too early and signaled for a corner, then let the goal stand. I was at the game but didn't hear the whistle through all the crowd noise though surely it was audible on the field and by the AR.

This is correct.

In the Bob Bradley era, no matter who the US played, it seemed to end up either 2-1, 1-1, or 1-2. Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Grenada, St. Kitts-Nevis, Equatorial Guinea, Faroe Islands, England, Algeria, Manchester United, Grays Athletic, it didn't matter. Maybe now the options are less limited.

Remember Benny Feilhaber? The Revs exited the US Open Cup against a lower level team from Harrisburg. It was 0-0 in regulation, Revs went up 3-0 in extra time, then blew the lead and it went to penalties. Feilhaber was the final PK taker with the Revs down 4-3...and his kick was saved.

So far 13 of the MLS teams have played and 7 have lost, including Chicago who lost to a PDL (amateur) team. Salt Lake is one of the teams who paid off the lower division team so they could host the game (USSF allows this), but RSL lost anyway. The Galaxy also lost, to a winless team (Carolina Railhawks) from the NASL (2nd division).

Dzeko to Bayern supposedly imminent, for around €20m.

Kagawa to United still "almost" done (€15m+). I'm sure they'll seal that any day now.

And Schalke are being linked with just about everyone under the sun, including Cacau, Dani Alves, and I am sure much to Shooty's delight, Rafael van der Vaart.

Man, if I got worried about every rumor I'm going to see this summer...

Speaking of which, the rumor flying around the Spurs blogosphere is Redknapp may be on the way out. The fact that the club is dragging their feet about signing him to an extension is interesting in the context of those rumors. Vertonghen looks certain to sign, too.

I've been under a rock the last week or so. What did Hazard do that pissed everyone off? No one thought he was going to sign for anyone other than one of the bastard mega clubs, did they?

I guess my #1263 explains why some have been turned off by him.

It's amazing how much my stress level gets reduced when I stay away from tv and internet!

Other random thought I had the last couple of weeks which I know you're dying to hear...

I think, after watching Bradley for Chievo and how he played against Scotland, I would trade Scott Parker for him in a second. His improvement has been remarkable and I think he could probably play for anyone at this point. That Aston Villa ended up with Jermaine Jenas starting for them in that position last year says a lot about where Aston Villa is right now, unfortunately.

The soccer gods seem to not want me to be able to enjoy Torino in Serie A next season. Because of Al Jazeera I have no idea right now how I'm going to watch the games and now the Italian PM wants to shut the league down which, granted, maybe what they need to clean out the cesspool, but still! It's shocking to see someone at Juventus caught up in something like this...
   1272. Flynn Posted: May 30, 2012 at 09:37 AM (#4142858)
Juve are getting a slightly bad rap for this. Conte is under investigation for what he did at Siena, and as ursus has said, this often comes from higher up than managers.

Lazio, on the other hand, should be getting more, as they are the only club to be involved in every Italian betting scandal: Totonero, Totonero bis, Calciopoli and now Calcio scommesse.

Juve are getting a slightly bad rap for this.

Right now, the board of Juventus has Gordon Ramsey preparing the world's last known unicorn, a 3 thousand year old symbol of beauty and wonder, for slaughter in order to appease the demon-lord that granted them this year's title. I will grant them no quarter!

Speaking of Gordon Ramsey...

That's a good Tottenham man, that Teddy Sheringham is.

Brendan Rogers is the man at Liverpool, according to reports from the BBC.

Really? Weren't they relegated like 5 or 6 years ago because of involvement with a match fixing scandal?

Yes, and stripped of a couple of titles, but this current scandal involving their manager relates to events that happened when he was at Siena in Serie B. I'm sure Juventus couldn't care less what his involvement was, though, except if it means any kind of suspension for him. Evidently the Italian police seized his, Conte's, papers and his computer. It could be Conte didn't have any choice in the matter even if he was involved. Il sistema! It's hard to judge these guys until you've walked a mile in their shoes, etc.

It's not paranoia. The England players have been there before (they have drawn almost exclusively Eastern European teams, including Ukraine, the last few qualification campaigns), so they know a thing or two about the backwardness of the locals.

I think these matters are highly politicized, though. "Dope on the table", to quote The Wire. I mean, was it really necessary to raid Criscito's locker room (if I read correctly, he was awaken early in the morning and handed the warrant)? I'm laughing at the notion of Criscito having a folder labeled "Match Fixing, Genoa, 2011 - Details and Contacts", neatly tucked away in his locker. I dunno, maybe I'm just naive. (Which isn't to say that there weren't shenanigans, mind you.)

Heck, even the final pronouncements surrounding calciopoli strike me as strange. I think I remember hearing from Gab Marcotti that phone taps revealed Inter were 'participating' in the same referee-influencing-dealings that Moggi/Juve were, yet they were still awarded the scudetto?

That is just too...too...ah I don't even have a word for it.

Re: #1282: I'd be more impressed if the book was on his desk. The movie sort of plays like a Cliff Notes version of the book, and is much less detailed about the sorts of things you'd imagine might be applicable for a football manager.

Of course, he may just have slapped the DVD onto his desk as an attempt at appeasement to the Liverpool higher-ups...

I suppose I'm alone in really disliking the new USA kits. The back of the kit is especially awful to me.

Dzeko to Bayern supposedly imminent, for around €20m.

How much does he overlap with Gomez in terms of where they like to be on the field?

Mario Balotelli:

"I will not accept racism at all. It's unacceptable. If someone throws a banana at me in the street, I will go to jail, because I will kill them."

I can't say I disapprove, if you're throwing a banana at a black guy then this world doesn't need you.

I think I remember hearing from Gab Marcotti that phone taps revealed Inter were 'participating' in the same referee-influencing-dealings that Moggi/Juve were, yet they were still awarded the scudetto?

That wasn't known by the football federation at the time, I think that stems from the Moggi trial (I suppose they tried a everybody-did-it defense) so it surfaced way later. There was only a couple of months between the scandal broke and all sporting punishments had to be handed out.

Of course the only faireffective punishment would have been to dissolve all the involved clubs and continue to do so with errant clubs until the owners got the hint.

While I can completely see his POV... If you're the Italian manager, wouldn't you have to be a bit crazy to have Balotelli anywhere near the pitch during the Euros? It like a guaranteed red card just waiting to happen.

This was all true before Balotelli's comments about possible racism at the Euros though.

The City Islanders have a habit of making runs in the Open Cup. In 2007 (beating DC), 2009 (beating the Revolution) and 2010 (beating the Red Bulls) they made it all the way to the quarterfinals as a 3rd division team.

Looks like BTF-thread favorite Zdenek Zeman is headed to Roma. Does this mean Montella is likely headed to Fiorentina?

EDIT: Excuse my ignorance, but how is that first name pronounced? Denn-eck? Or do you actually have to force the "zzz" in there?

Oh yes, both the z and the d has to be there.

There are tougher Czech/Slovak names to pronounce though, Vlk for example.

I love the new jersey, something fresh. Best US kit since 1992 at least.

US National team jerseys in all sports tend to be really boring, since every team that ever has or ever will exist is red, white and blue and the USA is too easy to stick on the front. The last good hockey sweater was 1960. I don't think USA Baseball has ever had a non-hideous uniform, although 1984 olympics was ok (if you can stand pullovers). I think basketball has used the same jersey my entire life.

Looks like BTF-thread favorite Zdenek Zeman is headed to Roma.

Boo! Although not surprising: what's his longest stop as a coach?

I liked the 1995 and 2008 kits. The 1994 kits were dreadful, and I strongly dislike anything with a sash. All the others are kinda meh.

Brendan Rodgers accepts the Liverpool gig. Good hire, I feel.

Those '92 ones are awful.

Like the 2008 kits, I thought the new kits looked terrible by themselves, but in a game I liked them.

Flip.
