Chandler told Klinsi that he didn't want to be selected; he's evidently trying to see if he has a shot with Germany (not for this tournament, obviously).

He also backed out of the Gold Cup. He isn't doing himself any favors with the US if Germany won't call him up. We'll take him, but I imagine he is not that popular among his would be US teammates or coaches right now.

Fortuna promoted after a half hour delay; Hertha likely to appeal.

Torino win 3-0

Huddersfield Town eliminate Franchise from the playoffs and will play Sheffield Utd in the final.

From the Guardian:

But as Dalglish prepares to go on holiday on Wednesday, it is in the knowledge that the meeting with Henry and Werner, his explanation for Liverpool's lowest league finish for 18 years and insistence that a major summer overhaul is unnecessary has not resolved the critical issue of whether he will remain as manager next season.
(my bold)

Interesting. Entering next season with that roster, I would put them clearly after City, United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham. So 6th, at best, going into the season. While I'm sure Daglish would disagree with that assessment, I would think "With luck we might crack the top 5" is not what Henry is looking for.

On the other hand, there has to be some kind of BABIP-related regression to the mean on all of those times they hit the post, right?

The Guardian is reporting that Hodgson won't be taking Terry, the Mirror is saying that he won't be taking Rio because of injury and a number of other outlets are reporting that he's decided that he can't take them both.

Terry, Jones and Smalling over Rio; Rio vocally unhappy and blaming Terry; Stevie G captain.

What could possibly go wrong?

You don't see this too often:

It’s rumoured Roma have offered Under-21 international Alessandro Crescenzi in exchange for Catania releasing Coach Vincenzo Montella.

Can't help but feel bad for Rio. He should have taken Rio or neither. Too bad Walker can't go but as a Spurs fan I'm selfishly happy he can spend the summer getting rested and fit.

Funny, I read the same article and while it appears Hodgson's met with Terry at Chelsea's training ground, the article does not state flat-out that Terry has been selected. I wonder if it's just that Terry hasn't commented on his non-selection the way others have. The in-person visit could be seen as deference to his status as the once-captain.

I guess I'm in the camp that thinks neither should be picked and that they should move on. I guess we'll see tomorrow AM here in the states (1pm for the UK folks).
   712. ursus arctos Posted: May 15, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4132399)
Taking the article at face value, wouldn't it be quite bizarre for Hodgson to meet together with "Terry and the other Chelsea internationals" if he wasn't going to pick Terry?
   713. Textbook Editor Posted: May 15, 2012 at 09:00 PM (#4132406)
#712--Good point.

I still think saying "a pox on both your houses" and taking neither would have been the best play--a clean break from the past and a move to the future.

If he hadn't met with other players, yes. But you could also read it as he met with other players and since Terry was there, he talked to him.
   715. I am going to be Frank Posted: May 15, 2012 at 11:02 PM (#4132481)
The French team looks pretty young.

I think you have to go with Terry over Ferdinand (and I hate Terry). He's more fit and I think there has to be some benefit of a potential Cahill and Terry partnership as they will be more familiar with each other. Did Hodgson use 4-4-2 at Liverpool? I know that he used it at Fulham and West Brom. I can't imagine a Gerrard/Parker midfield partnership working well.
   716. Textbook Editor Posted: May 16, 2012 at 12:16 AM (#4132528)
So what is the upside potential of Ireland at the Euros? Should I be hoping for a 1-1 Croatia draw, a 0-0 Spain draw and a 0-0 Italy draw, and then hope:

Croatia loses to Spain and draws Italy
Italy loses to Spain and draws Croatia
Spain beats Italy & Croatia

If that all comes to pass, Ireland would get 2nd in the group and make the quarterfinals, against the winner of Group D... likely to be one of England/France/Sweeden. I wouldn't fancy Ireland's chances, but any of those teams would be (I think) beatable if things break right. Then it would be onto the semifinals and you could start dreaming...

[splashes cold water on face]

Sorry. Got a bit carried away there... but basically my point is I can see Trappatoni playing for 3 draws, especially if they draw that 1st game against Croatia. I can sort of see him trying to go for a goal and win that Croatia match 1-0, but aside from that I think it'll be park the bus time for the R of I... With some epic hand-wringing by the RTE studio crew after each game...
   717. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: May 16, 2012 at 08:19 AM (#4132610)
England: Hart, Green, Ruddy - Baines, Cahill, Cole, Johnson, Jones, Lescott, Terry - Barry, Downing, Gerrard, Lampard, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Parker, Walcott, Young - Carroll, Defoe, Rooney, Welbeck.

With all the good wing players in England, they still insist on Stewart Downing. WTF? I'd take Dyer, Moses, Sinclair, Lennon, Agbonlahor and Johnson before I'd even think of Stewart Downing even if I had to play any of those guys out of position to make it work. Defoe over Sturridge is interesting, but if you need a goal late, Defoe is a decent bet to poach you one. I don't get why Andy Carroll gets the nod over Holt or Crouch, but whatever.

Seriously, huh? They didn't hire Hodgson to think outside the box!

edit: And it looks like Henderson would replace Parker if Parker can't go. Carrick must have pissed Roy off somewhere down the line.
   720. Mattbert Posted: May 16, 2012 at 09:05 AM (#4132639)
I was quite prepared to root for them this summer provided Roy went with an interesting team and ditched England's Brave John Terry. Whoops.

Btw, even though Victor Moses represented England as a yute, he has hitched his wagon to the Nigeria setup at senior level.

Ah. Whoscored.com needs to fix their little flag icon for him, then. Still doesn't change my larger point that Stewart Downing is terrible.

I love rooting against England, so this is totally fine with me. Having Jordan Henderson on deck to replace Parker is... adorable? Is that condescending enough?

I'm pretty surprised Micah Richards didn't get the call, considering Walker is out. I guess Jones is the backup to Johnson, which isn't crazy.
   725. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: May 16, 2012 at 09:35 AM (#4132658)
Let's talk about something just as insane but more fun...Spurs rumors! Vertonghen and Spurs have agreed to personal terms but Ajax and Tottenham are haggling over a fee (no jokes about two Yid clubs here, please). Loic Remy is supposed to go to Spurs if they get a CL entry and, in the dumb rumor of the day, Spurs are "battling" with Arsenal and, ahem, QPR, for the services of octogenarian striker Del Piero. Also Adebayor loves Spurs more than Arsenal and wants to stay. Ade has really learned how to work the soundbites in the last few years!
   726. DA Baracus is gritty and hits with RISP Posted: May 16, 2012 at 09:52 AM (#4132680)
John Terry is like a horror movie villain: he keeps coming back again and again and he's really slow.

Did Hodgson use 4-4-2 at Liverpool? I know that he used it at Fulham and West Brom. I can't imagine a Gerrard/Parker midfield partnership working well.

Hodgson always uses pairings, so he either plays 4-4-2 or 4-2-2-2.

   727. I am going to be Frank Posted: May 16, 2012 at 10:16 AM (#4132701)
So 4-4-1-1?

Hart - Johnson, Terry, Lescott/Cahill, Cole - Walcott/AOC, Parker, Lampard, Young - Stevie G - Welbeck (Rooney when he comes back).

Lampard has played deeper more recently especially for Di Matteo and has looked ok. It does bring back the whole Gerrard/Lampard can they play together thing.
   728. I am going to be Frank Posted: May 16, 2012 at 10:19 AM (#4132704)

I thought this was a joke. What's funnier is that his previous title "Works and Infrastructure Minister" just screams "graft."

Hart - Johnson, Terry, Lescott/Cahill, Cole - Walcott/AOC, Parker, Lampard, Young - Stevie G - Welbeck (Rooney when he comes back).

When Rooney comes back this would work much, much better if they just dropped Gerrard and played Rooney and Welbeck up front. Gerrard should probably not even be on this team.
   730. I am going to be Frank Posted: May 16, 2012 at 10:24 AM (#4132707)
I don't disagree but I don't think Woy would have made Gerrard captain if his intention was to sit him.

Rumours that Liverpool have contacted at least one current Premier League manager.

If you are being crucified for hiring Bobby Valentine, do you react by hiring Roberto Martinez for your soccer team?

Roberto Martinez doesn't seem like a Valentine-type. He actually reminds me more of Francona in style. Too bad it didn't work out for Dalglish, but FSG must be wondering how he can't win when the team is loaded with England internationals... Really, though, I kind of dig Dalglish even despite his PR ineptitude when it came to the Suarez affair. Maybe even because of that--he doesn't have that Alan Pardew slickness or Harry Redknapp cageyness about him.

   737. DA Baracus is gritty and hits with RISP Posted: May 16, 2012 at 11:18 AM (#4132762)
I don't get the appeal of Roberto Martinez. He's gone 16th, 16th, and 15th at Wigan. I'm not saying he's terrible, but that's zero progress in 3 years. They had a great 2nd half to the season this year to escape relegation, but half a season doesn't make anybody, although all sports are littered with players and coaches getting significantly improved roles/positions based on less, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason why.
   738. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: May 16, 2012 at 11:23 AM (#4132769)
I don't get the appeal of Roberto Martinez.

I hear you, but look at what he has to work with and how fierce the competition is to stay in the top flight. Hell, he's much better at beating Man U than anyone who has managed Spurs in the last 20 years. He also has a reputation of an honorable and loyal guy and his teams play positively, generally. It may be that he's one of those guys who does better overachieving with lesser players but I think he's earned a chance to see if he can move up the ladder.
   739. ursus arctos Posted: May 16, 2012 at 11:24 AM (#4132770)
Martinez has had very little to work with at Wigan, presents himself well and has "modern" ideas about the game and international contacts. He's also relatively cheap (Liverpool will have spent zillions paying off Benitez, Hodgson and now Daglish).

I'm not sure that he's objectively better than Lambert or Rodgers, but I can see why his name is coming up.

I'm conflicted about this. But, better now than hem-hawing for a few weeks.

Does Martinez have any connection to popular DoF candidates Txixi Begiristain or Pep Segura?
   741. ursus arctos Posted: May 16, 2012 at 11:38 AM (#4132787)
None that come to mind immediately other than being Catalan. Martinez was at Zaragoza before he came to England and doesn't have any Barcelona connections (he played for his home town youth club in Balaguer).

Capello. Nice one! I still think they should just offer Klopp however much money it would take for Klopp to sale his soul and take the job. This is LIVERPOOL FC and they are hard as hell, they should be thinking big. Hire Klopp and get him to bring along Kagawa and maybe see if they can rescue Sahin from Real. That gives them a great manager and fixes their sloggy midfield. Then again, as a Spurs fan, I'll take Martinez and a modest offseaon of tinkering at the edges, thank you very much.

It's still early days for FSG and it's easy to forget now how close the the brink Liverpool were. I think in the long run Liverpool will be fine.

I guess we got our answer as to how FSG felt about the handling of the Suarez incident and the season in general.

It was interesting that they fired the DOF first. Maybe they did that to get a head start on the window with someone?

There is no way Klopp is coming. I figure the club would be reluctant to put up a huge pay packet to entice him and it would take an astronomical amount for him to even consider it. If I'm Klopp I stay there as long as possible. That is a sweet gig. I'm not sure what I'd leave that job for at the moment if I were him.

I would want no part of Capello. They need a younger guy. I can see some of the arguments for Martinez, but I'd rather have Lambert. I think he's a guy that might be a big time manager in the not too distant future. I've thought that for awhile. The Canaries don't have much and won back to back promotions and a mid table finish. Sure you run the risk of hiring a flash in the pan but I think he's going to be excellent and now is the time to get him.

I'm surprised I'm not seeing more about who they're bringing in as DoF. At least as of now, FSG appear to be keen on that model. If that's the case, wouldn't the process be a bit backwards if they go out and hire a manager first and then follow that up with the DoF hire? What am I missing? (Please don't say FSG incompetence.)

I'm not sure he would. Maybe he wants a new challenge or sees the prospects of the team falling as they sell off players or Liverpool back up a truckload of money and the man isn't made of stone. I think it would take a LOT of money to get him to do it, but I think it would be worth it for Liverpool to do it. I do not expect them, too, though. Former Man City striker Uwe Rosler manages in one of the lower divisions. Where is Brentford, in League One or League Two?
   772. ursus arctos Posted: May 16, 2012 at 02:17 PM (#4133022)
League One. I hadn't realized that Roesler was there.

That's cool, I'll look it up.

They're in League One. Finished 9th.

Turkmenistan reportedly beat Maldives 3-2 in a "ghost match" -- neither country knew about the contest because it never actually happened, yet bookmakers still took action and fixers still profited.

The fix in Antalya revealed the artless contempt that the Singapore syndicate had for international soccer. The games generated seven goals in total, all scored on penalty kicks. After a Latvian player missed one penalty, the referee ordered that it be retaken.

Good read about crime syndicates fixing games and a Henry Hill-like match fixer.

I'm not sure he would. Maybe he wants a new challenge or sees the prospects of the team falling as they sell off players or Liverpool back up a truckload of money and the man isn't made of stone.

Well, while Klopp's taken the League & Cup titles, Dortmund was kind of an embarrassment in this year's Champion's League. So he's got that to look forward to. And I can't see them selling off too many players, they draw 80,000 fans to Signal Iduna per game. They are losing Kagawa but Gotze will be returning and I think one of Gundogan/Leitner/Perisic will be able to step into Kagawa's role.

If it was only a question of finances. Player power is a major force in modern football, if say Götze wants to play somewhere else, he will soon enough.

If you are laying bets on Turkmenistan vs. Maldives, you have a ####### problem.

I suspect match fixing is much worse than even the cynics among us suspect.

Of course not, but that is because he wants to stay.

Of course, the marks must have thought they had inside information about the fix too. Which is why you should never bet on a fix unless you personally pay the ref.

I believe the most obscure thing I have ever bet on was a bass fishing competition, and that was more for the ability to say that I have bet on bass fishing. Otherwise I mostly stay with football, and that's mostly the upper divisions in Europe and international competitions, with an odd bet on Japanese football every now and then.

I just don't see that many Dortmund players being disgruntled enough to want to leave. I wouldn't be surprised if one of Kuba/Perisic/Grobkreutz leaves over a lack of playing time, but everyone else seems set. Barrios is IIRC playing in China next year but I don't think that's too big of a loss.
   786. Randy Jones Posted: May 16, 2012 at 04:42 PM (#4133178)
Apparently SAF and Mike Phelan were at Dortmund's last game and met with Kagawa afterwards. I certainly wouldn't mind if United got him.

For those of you wondering why Carrick wasn't in the England squad: (link)

Another potential option, Michael Carrick, was not considered after the 30-year-old had asked not to be included if he was to play only a bit-part role. Carrick is effectively now retired from international football, though he would be available in extremis in future if required. "Michael had made it clear in the past he didn't want to be involved [as a fringe player]," Hodgson said. "As it is, I'd have to be convinced he was better than the four I've selected, and that he'd be happy to come out of retirement, if he was to be considered."

If and when he does jump ship for a bigger club, it will be interesting to see what Martinez can do with greater resources and better players at his disposal.

Far be it from me to defend the Glazers, or bash the Guardian, but that article is basically nonsense. They are basically saying that United's revenue is down, and using that revenue as a baseline going forward, it will now take them longer to repay the debt. But there's really no reason to assume that as a baseline going forward. The cause of the drop is right there in the article, the fluky early exit from the CL. Odds are, they'll do better next year, revenue will jump back up, and the "increase" in net debt will magically disappear.

If I'm a United fan, I'd be thrilled that groos debt is down 60m squid, despite the drop in revenue. That's a massively positive sign.

The debt is going in the right direction and they've been aggressive about getting rid if the insane PIK's they had. At the end of this, if revenues stay level or increase (and I can't imagine why they won't unless Europe really is headed for Armageddeon), Man U is going to pay all that debt down, eventually. Of course, that debt really exists to pay the Glazers for owning the team so it's going to be a hell of a deal for them and the lenders who fronted the money. So the Glazers get the world's biggest sports team and all they had to do was risk destroying that club to do it. Lucky for them and for Man U fans it looks like it's going to work. I'm trying to figure out how to get Wells Fargo to do the same for me so I can start my Shooty FC project but they won't take my calls. Bastards.

Villa really isn't a bad spot for him. They're a mess, but they have more resources than Wigan and if he does well there he can manage any team he wants. He's only 38 so he has the luxury of taking his time.

The buzz around the Aston Villa boards today is that the team is preparing to appoint...

... *drumroll* ...

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Yeah, I know, I had to look at the Wikipedia page, too, to find out what he's done since he retired as a player. He managed Man U's reserves for a few years, then took over Molde in Norway 18 months ago.

If Villa management are bound and determined to go sign somebody out of left field, this is as good as it could be; OGS has spent a lot of time around Sir Alex and did take Molde straight to a league title. But it's still a helluva reach.
