Solomon: Astros need changes but not to name

Crane: Auto focus grope.

If you want change, change the team colors, paint the grass at Minute Maid Park orange, and hire scantily clad cheerleaders to dance on top of the dugouts between innings. But don’t make some silly name change as a money-grabbing ploy to sell more jerseys and caps.

Astroworld is gone, the Astrodomain is now Reliant Park, and the Astrodome is a blight on the city skyline.

But the Astros are Houston’s team, and despite what idiot politicians who didn’t grant us a space shuttle say, Houston is Space City. You may have purchased the franchise, but Astros is the name that belongs to the baseball team in Space City.

From Aspromonte, Watson, Dierker and Wynn to Cedeno, Cruz, Richard and Ryan to Bagwell, Biggio, Berkman and Oswalt, MLB stars in Houston have been Astros.

Keep this up, and your team will be the team formerly known as the favorite baseball team of tens of thousands of Houstonians.

People aren’t embarrassed about being Astros fans because of the team name. They are embarrassed about being Astros fans because the team finished with the worst record in baseball.

You know, I could sort of see the point in chaning the name of the Astros if they were treated (like the NFL's Baltimore Ravens)as a new franchise.

That is, the Astros "records" and "history" remains behind as an NL franchise.

Hmmm, come to think of that, I don't think that this has ever been done (change leagues and names in U.S. - Canadian sports, while also leaving behind the history of the original franchise), so I doubt it would fly.

The Rays are glad to let the "Devil Rays" keep the history of the Wade Boggs-Jose Canseco-Vinny Castilla era and the Brent Abernathy-Damian Rolls era. Go ahead, Naimoli! Build a statue of Ryan Rupe on your own private property!

I could never figure out what was wrong with this storied nickname. It sure as hell represented the state of Texas a lot more than some space program.

My favorite Astros identity was the navy blue and gold one from the 1990s. It was modern, yet simple and not crazy. For people of a certain age, the space program is still the coolest thing ever, as much of a romantic adventure as being a gun-slinging cowboy. There are so many avenues in rebranding the Astros because space travel has taken may forms in the last century. They could choose a 1950s-1960s Jetsons style, an art deco Flash Gordon style or the currently popular steampunk style.

Texans like their guns, Andy, but as murder rates rose in Houston over the past half-century, I think the name would have eventually gone the way of "Bullets." Not to mention that the name is more appropriate to Hartford, Connecticut anyway :)

The current club is much better run, but Devil Rays was exponentially better than Rays. Tampa Bay Devil Rays just rolled off the tongue. Tampa Bay Rays are a couple of pool players, and not very good ones.

Stingrays was apparently the first choice (per Keri's book), but Naimoli was too cheap to give some minor league team $50G for the rights.

I still prefer Devil Rays, due to the syllabic balance with Tampa Bay.

Among major league uniforms that looked like bad softball uniforms, the Astros' various rainbows were.

Colt firearms considered it a copyright violation and would not permit the Houston team to continue using the Colt 45s.

They were talking about this this morning on MLB Radio, and were taking suggestions for the new team name.

Best one, I think, was the Houston Outlaws. Rangers vs. Outlaws. It works.

For the rest of the decade the most appropriate name would be Houston Bitche$. Because they will be the Texas Rangers' bitche$ until at least 2017.

As a Ranger fan I go to Houston for two of the three games there every year. And every year Texas crushes them in Houston.

If the new front office isn't brain dead I expect the Bitche$ to be adequate again in a couple of years. By then most Texans will have become Ranger fans instead of remaining Bitche$ fans. Say what you will about Houstonians, but they are the most bandwaggoning, "I will root only for a team that is winning and then abandon them when they hit hard times" bunch in the nation.

You might live in Houston and say "I am not that way" but you know most "fans" in Houston are.

I can't WAIT for 2013. Welcome to the AL, Bitche$

I notice that the Astros have hired Mike Fast of Baseball Prospectus to work in Baseball Operations. First, congratulations to him. Second, I like his articles and research; I'm glad he is working for the Astros.

I'm also surmising that after JFK was shot to death in Texas, a ball club there probably wouldn't want to be named after a firearm.

Couldn't they have said it was a reference to the malt liquor?

"The Washington Bullets have announced a name change, to distance themselves from associations with violence and crime. The team will now be known as the Maryland Bullets."

Of course... if it were, they'd be the Gamblers. :P
Jim Kelly, run-and-shoot, "Three Musketeers". That was fun stuff to watch back in the day.

The [Oklahoma] Outlaws were fairly nondescript, apart from having Doug Williams at QB. Better than I recall the [San Antonio] Gunslingers being, though - Rick Neuheisel was their QB, IIRC.

solomon needs to go back to his basketball games

i would love it if the astros changed their name when they go to the DH league to stink it up there. it would be nice to not have to stain the names of all the great astros players with the DH taint

they will indeed be beaten by the rangers and everyone else seeing as how they are a bad team and will continue to be bad teams, mike fast or no mike fast. you can't make chicken soup outta chicken poopoo and the astros just don't have one single good position player, not ONE, let alone great player. all those pimped ed wade prospects? you got to be kidding me. jonathan singleton? he ain't even as good as kody hinze

they have 2 good pitchers and they are going to get rid of one of them as soon as possible. they have zero relievers above average. they have no closer. they have no good minor league pitchers.

as for the "bandwagoner" complaints - all i can say is that there is no point in supporting an owner who has no interest in winning, unless it happens by pure accident.

The folks who brought us plastic grass and indoor baseball have done enough staining of their own. The DH can't possibly do them any harm.
