Soto’s inside-the-park homer should have been automatic

Good to see someone throwing Joe West under the proverbial bus. Now if only someone would throw him under a literal bus.

Bob Watson, Major League Baseball’s vice president in charge of rules and on-field operation, acknowledged Geovany Soto’s inside-the-park home run Monday night should have been ruled a regular home run, which would have saved Soto from racing around the bases at full speed.

“That’s the way the ground rule reads,” Watson said, referring to the ball hitting above and to the right of an L-shaped yellow line on the left-center-field wall of Minute Maid Park.

Umpire Joe West said he lost sight of the ball, according to Watson, which is why the ball was ruled in play after it hit above the yellow line. Of course, Soto made that a moot point by running around the bases and scoring anyway.

“For me, it wasn’t that difficult a call,” Watson said. “But I’m not an umpire.”

Is he implying that you have to be nearly blind to be an umpire?

I will say that it's much harder to tell where on that wall the ball hits during live game action than it is to see it on a replay. That wall is lightly-colored (the same color on both sides of the line), and if you lose track of the ball in flight, you'll probably hear the ball hit rather than see it.

much ado about nothing, If Soto didn't get hurt on the play I guarantee you that 20 years down the road he's going to remember this homerun more than almost any other homerun he hits in his career... A catcher with an inside the park homerun, that is something to tell the grandkids. And since he plays for the Cubs it's very unlikely he'll hit a world series Homerun :)

If it weren't for these newfangled outfield fences that zig and zag and get higher and lower across the outfield (Oakland Coliseum - sigh), if we still had nice simple fences of the same height all across, then it would be easy again to tell what is a home run and what isn't. Ball on the field? In play. Ball over the fence? Home run.
