Source: A’s sign former All-Star Matt Harvey minor league contract

The A’s are taking a chance on Matt Harvey.

A source confirmed to NBC Sports California’s Ben Ross that the A’s signed Harvey to a minor league contract. Roster Resource first reported the sides were nearing an agreement, and Jon Heyman first reported the deal.

Harvey was one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball during the first three seasons of his career, making the All-Star Game and finishing fourth in NL Cy Young voting in 2013. He partially tore his UCL that season and missed all of 2014 after underoing Tommy John surgery, but Harvey returned to form in 2015 and helped lead the Mets to the NL pennant.

And with the minor league season over in a little over three weeks too….

Harvey's getting paid $11 million by the Angels this year.

I mean, why not? Harvey's a warm body, maybe the A's see something and can wring 15 useful innings from him this September. Or maybe he gets bombed a couple of times in Las Vegas and the whole episode is as memorable as Tim Lincecum's tenure with the Texas Rangers.

Probably a signing for next year - collect warm bodies and see what sticks

Is it too soon to start calling all the doubles he gives up Harvey's Wallbangers?

I have no doubt he'll return to top-of-the-rotation quality Matt Harvey within a week now that he's away from whatever hex the Angels operate under.

Seriously, just once I'd like one of these signings/trades to work out for the Angels. Even when they do (Tommy LaStella), the guy ends up hurt for half the season.

Ugh. Can't root for Harvey.

Harvey has enough service time that he's a free agent after this season.

I never get why pitchers like this - talented starters who lose it - don't try to become relievers? Oliver Perez made a nice career out of it, and I think Lincecum tried it, but nobody else ever seems to?

“Oliver Perez made a nice career out of it . . . “

Continues to make a career out of it, no? Ollie Perez was healthy, he just lacked an effective pitch to get RHB out—which almost always revealed itself when he tried. In shorter stints against mostly LHB he has been mostly OK. Harvey’s greatest problem appears to be above the neck as he pushed himself into a TJ surgery and pushed his recovery from said TJ surgery to the point that his arm may already be toast.

Recall the ‘15 WS and the image of Harvey telling his manager that he would choke him out if the latter tried to remove him from the game. Telling Harvey that, in order for his team to have any chance of winning said WS Harvey would need to pitch again and would benefit from the extra rest he would get from leaving the current game after a hundred or so pitches and with a lead, accomplished nothing. You wanna tell this guy he’s moving to the BP?

I would think a half decade of crappy pitching would humble a pitcher. Tell him he can try a bullpen job for the league minimum, a AAA starting spot for much less than that, or he can enjoy his retirement.
