Source: Kendrick returning to Nats on two-year deal - Nationals Pastime

Open the floodgates!!

Kendrick and the Nationals have agreed to a two-year, $7 million contract, a source familiar with the deal confirmed, ensuring the club has a valuable bench piece - not to mention a backup plan at both second base and in the outfield - returning for 2018 and 2019. Completion of the contract, which was first reported by USA Today, is pending a physical, the source said.

Well, there it is: the FA market is no longer clogged up if Howie Kendrick is signing somewhere.

fun fact: Kendrick's career AVG is .291, tying him with Bob Abreu, Ellis Burks, David Segui, Hal Chase, Carlos Baerga, Hanley Ramirez, and HOFer Travis Jackson, among others

24th among active players (counting the decomposing David Wright)

That's a really good deal for the Nats. Kendrick may not be an everyday player anymore, but he has value as a well-rounded bench player who gives 300 PA or so from 2B/LF. $3.5M AAV is nothing these days. Good job by the Nats' front office.

Agree. 1.6 WAR in just 334 PA last year. If he keeps his wRC+ over 100, you probably can get his 450 PAs as a super sub.

And if somebody goes down, he won't embarrass you starting for a month or two.

Kind of surprise the Yankees wouldn't beat this offer, with their IF holes. Is he not tolerable at 2B anymore?

Well, that will certainly help the cubs.

If the MLB story is true - neither Shaw (whom the Pirates probably wouldn't be interested in anyway) nor Beede are included, Pirate fan moods are not likely to improve after the Cole trade...

None of whom have ever been in my ... Well, OK, Travis Jackson was. My great-aunt's living room, anyway, which I wound up inheriting about 12 years later.

Is he not tolerable at 2B anymore?

Hard to say, but it was just 15 starts there last year, 23 the year before. Dodgers, Phils and Nats all seem agreed he's better-suited to LF these days although that may have had more to do with the 2B competition (a declining but still average Utley in 2016, an emerging Cesar Hernandez and Murphy in 2017). You can't just quality from 340 innings over two years but neither TZ nor DRS considered his defense at 2B to be laughable.
