Source: Red Sox, Eduardo Nunez agree to deal

The Red Sox have agreed to a deal with super-utility man Eduardo Nunez, pending a physical, a source told MLB.com on Thursday.

The Red Sox, sticking with team policy for uncompleted free-agent negotiations, have not confirmed the deal. The length of the contract is unknown.

Always had a soft spot in my heart for Nune5.

His "helmets-jettisoned-per-distance-covered" ratio is second-to-none!

He might be second on this team, after Hanley. Hanley's helmet falls off when he blinks.

Yeah but Hanley has the added benefit of a size 7 head with size 22 hair.

Nunez played SS for the Yankees, so he has a size 7 head with size 22 aura.

Looks like a 1-year, $6M deal, plus incentives, although structured a bit differently:
The Red Sox have announced the signing and designated right-hander Ben Taylor to make room for Nunez. He’ll earn $4MM in 2018, and his player option is also worth $4MM (with a $2MM buyout), per Heyman, who adds that the deal includes escalators and incentives. Specifically, Nunez could earn an extra $1MM in 2019 based on number of plate appearances this year and another $1MM in ’19 based on performance bonuses, Drellich tweets.

If he's any good, the opt-out would seem certain.

1/6 is a really good deal for the Sox in my opinion. I’m really glad they brought him back. He was what they needed.

Wow, this is crazy cheap. I'd prefer him over Frazier, honestly.

Incredibly cheap.

NOOOOOO!

OK, complete overreaction on the latter. Still, I liked Taylor.

Is it just me, or is this not normally how these things are described?

I'm confused about what that means. He has a player option to get paid $4MM to rejoin the team, or $2MM to become a free agent?

I think so. Another way to describe the contact is a 1-year $6m contract with $2m of that $6m deferred (briefly), with a one-year $2m player option.

I get what they're saying, but I don't recall player options coming with a buyout. Club options often come with a buyout.

I've looked through the entire American League and found buyouts for club or mutual options, with only two exceptions, one being Nunez. The other is Ian Kennedy. Five-year contract with opt-out after two years, and a $6m buyout if he opted out.
