Source: Red Sox will pursue Soler

As Dan “Money Bags” Quayleters, once said….“It’s time for the Red Sox Nation to enter the Soler system!”

According to a major league source, the Red Sox do plan to pursue Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler, a 20-year-old who is awaiting approval by Major League Baseball to become an international amateur free agent. Though still considered very raw, Soler has tremendous power, with the potential to hit 30-plus homers a season in the majors if he proves capable of fulfilling his potential.

That said, the Sox—like most of the baseball industry—expect that the Cubs are likely to win the bidding for Soler. In some ways, Soler is emerging as the subject of the last unrestricted bidding war surrounding an international amateur free agent.

Remind me again - how are Cuban FA treated in regards to the salary luxury tax threshholds? Do they only count if they're on the 40 man roster? 25 man opening day roster?

Pretty sure they count if they're on the 40 man roster.

The Cubs are loading up on Cuban FAs. They just signed Concepcion to a 5 year deal. I expect the Sox are in it solely to mess with Theo. If they don't expect to win, they can at least make it more expensive for the Cubs to do so. This story has the smell of LL all over it.

I don't like Source, he's always peddling these deals that never happen.

Sounds more like Solers agent is the source. What better way to drive up the price than to get one of the big money teams involved.
