Source: Yankees hire Jim Hendry

The Yankees just scoop up all the available talent.

Former Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry has been hired by the New York Yankees as a special assistant to GM Brian Cashman, according to a major league source.

Hendry, who was the Cubs GM from 2002 to 2011, was let go by chairman Tom Ricketts after two straight fifth-place finishes.

Hendry, 56, worked 17 years in the Cubs organization in numerous positions, including farm director, scouting director, assistant GM and GM.

Hendry agreed to a multiyear deal with the Yankees, according to the source.

Under Hendry’s direction the Cubs won three division titles (2003, 2007, 2008). The 2003 team was five outs away from the franchise’s first World Series appearance since 1945 before an eighth-inning implosion in Game 6 against the Marlins in the NLCS.

When Cashman leaves, his replacement will already be in-house.

Hendry as the heir apparent to Cashman?

Oh, you'll love this, Yankee fans.

Meanwhile, someone get them on the phone to talk about a deal for Soriano, STAT!

It's a jump to conclusions mat!

I was just following on from #1.

Maybe he'll just talk Cashman into stocking up on crap-hitting middle infielders.

Pre-GM days, the Cubs drafted/signed and developed a pretty good chunk of talent while Hendry was involved with drafting, scouting, farm system, etc. especially on the pitching side. The system has been a bit dry the last few years but a Starlin Castro goes a long way and, while some were stupid trades, the Cubs generally had the minor-league talent to get trades done. And while he rightfully took a lot of crap for the Soriano (especially) and Z contracts, he signed a lot of pretty good contracts too. Seems a perfectly good choice for "special assistant."

Seriously...this looks similar to the Kevin Towers situation to me. Cashman has GM friends and likes to take care of them. All the better if they can provide some value to the team.

They're just jealous of the Red Sox having Allard Baird.

Why should I care who brings Mr. Cashman his coffee?

What Walt said. When Hendry made a move that looked to be based on scouting, it was usually a solid decision. I'm thinking of stuff like Michael Barrett, Aramis Ramirez, Ted Lily, Dempster (BTF cubdom, myself included, pegged the conversion to starter as a disaster waiting to happen), etc.

What he lacked was the ability to take an executive view of the franchise. He couldn't direct his employees to develop the farm as well as he did, he never figured out how to manage the roster, his managers needed managing, and the whole contract thing.

So yeah, the Yanks are doing fine to have this guy scouting potential in-season acquisitions or cross-checking scouts.

I agree with Walt as well.
