Sources: Angels close to getting Kazmir

The Los Angeles Angels are nearing a deal to acquire left-hander Scott Kazmir from the Tampa Bay Rays, according to sources.

Sweet Sassy Molassy!

Strictly financial it seems. Odd timing, though. The Rays couldn't wait until the offseason to do this?

Not if they have reason to believe that his arm is going to fall off between now and then.

Besides, with the way he's been pitching this season, the Rays already have suitable in-house replacements available for his slot in the starting rotation.

I still think of Kazmir as a LHP with ace potential and possibly, if he put it together, a Cy Young Award or two in his career.

What in the hell happened to turn him into a post-July 31st salary dump candidate?

Alex Torres and Matt Sweeney to the Rays- LA Times says it's done.

Some combination of an increasing walk rate, decreasing K rate, the annual DL stint, and a need to clear salary to help sign some of their other players to new deals.
   8. Danny Posted: August 28, 2009 at 09:05 PM (#3308043)
Kazmir's velocity was way down before his DL stint, he was walking guys like crazy, and he was getting hammered. Since he came back at the end of June, his FB velocity has returned to the low-90s, he's got his walks down to below 3/9IP, and his OPS against has dropped from ~.920 to ~.720.

His velocity and K rate are still a bit below where they were before 2009, and Fangraphs' pitch values show his FB as being a negative value pitch this year after being awesome the past few years. I don't know how much that has changed since his DL stint.

Weird timing for the Rays, who are just 3.5 games out of the wild card. Kazmir just had his best start of the year.

Nice pickup for the Angels. Kazmir's due $20M over the next 2 years, plus an option for 2012. They get to drop one of Saunders/Santana from the playoff rotation this year, and they offset the potential offseason departure of Lackey.

Edit: I'm surprised the Red Sox, Rangers, and Tigers all passed on claiming him.

As a Scott Kazmir fan, this is a sad day. As a Rays fan, I'm cautiously optimistic that this means that we'll have some resources to re-sign Crawford or a free agent during the offseason, and that these prospects are legit. Also looking forward to the Wade Davis era in Tampa Bay.
   10. Loren F. Posted: August 28, 2009 at 09:05 PM (#3308045)
Well, if Kazmir returns to 2005-08 form, then his $8M salary for 2010 is a steal and his $12M salary for 2011 is reasonable, by today's market.

Anyone know anything about Torres and Sweeney? As far as I know, they never made any Top-20 lists of Angels prospects.
   11. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 28, 2009 at 09:05 PM (#3308046)
Good thing the Rays' rotation goes six deep.

Kazmir just had his best start of the year.

That start was against a Jays lineup featuring Wells, Millar, Bautista, McDonald, and Chavez. I would recommend strongly against drawing any conclusions from that start.
   13. ?Donde esta Dagoberto Campaneris? Posted: August 28, 2009 at 09:11 PM (#3308051)
The Angels just had two miserable starts against that Jays lineup. They were desperate for pitching depth and I was fearing the Arroyo move. This (EDIT- would be) much better than that, I think.

Per Sickels in his 'Los Angeles Angels Top 20 Prospects for 2009' entry (published on New Years Eve, which blows my mind):

14) Alexander Torres, LHP, Grade C+: Overlooked lefty, solid strikeout/grounder combination in the California League.

Sweeney is only mentioned in passing at the end of the 'others' list. RHP.

Nah, you guys had the bad starts against the Lind/Overbay version. That's still not a great lineup, but it only has a couple holes, rather than being mostly holes.

Angels fans have to be happy about this. Kazmir's actually been pretty effective in five of his last six starts. With the Angels rotation still so inconsistent and bullpen still so flammable (coughFuentescough), getting Kazmir could go a long way towards winning the division.

Very, very happy with this.

EDIT: COME ON!

The Angels have money and, from the sound of it, the prospects are nothing special. I'm not an Angels fan, and I have to think that at least part of why the Rays are looking to trade Kazmir is because of health concerns, but I'd be pretty happy if I were them. At worst, they have to eat a contract, which they can afford to do. At best, they just got themselves three years of an excellent starter for a reasonable salary.
   22. robinred Posted: August 28, 2009 at 09:47 PM (#3308081)
Asssuming it goes through, this is an excellent idea for the Angels. Seems odd for the Rays, even with all their young arms.
   23. ?Donde esta Dagoberto Campaneris? Posted: August 28, 2009 at 09:52 PM (#3308088)
I can see it being a good deal for both sides. The "spectrum" of Kazmir is overpaid innings-eater vs. top-of-the-rotation guy. The Rays can't afford the cost of guessing at this point- and it's still a guess as to where he ends up. The Angels can afford it. Most importantly, an innings-eater has a lot of value for the Angels right now, which serves to really reduce their downside.

Most importantly, I wanted to know if Joel Sherman's reports were worth anything- I hope they are.
   24. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: August 28, 2009 at 09:54 PM (#3308091)
Sweeney's a 3B. I like him. I would still do this deal in a heartbeat. Kazmir isn't going to be any worse than the kids who have been forced into the rotation and his immediate potential upside is much higher.
   25. RJ in TO Posted: August 28, 2009 at 09:55 PM (#3308092)
overpaid innings-eater

Possibly because of his reputation as a guy who works deep into a lot of counts, I have a hard time thinking of Kazmir as an innings eater. Considering that he's averaging 5.8 innings a start, that title might be a bit of a stretch.

dunno... his report is still up, as is Bill Shaikin's at the L.A. Times, but mlb.com says it ain't so...

This is the part that surprises me the most. The Red Sox really need another competent starter right now.

Well, the Rangers are probably tight on cash, as their owner is in some financial trouble. For the Tigers, it seems like they're at the limits of their budget.

For the Red Sox? Who knows. Perhaps it's just a matter of not trusting the state of his health.

Marc Topkin (Rays reporter?) twats that it will be announced within the hour.

The NY Post blog says it's done. No idea how accurate. It's Sherman, and it's just 10 minutes old, so maybe he's got it confirmed now?

Yeah, but was there any chance the Rays just let him go?

To bad that Kazmir has to clear A.L. teams first during the waiver period. Otherwise, the Mets could trade Zambrano for Kazmir.
   33. flournoy Posted: August 28, 2009 at 11:57 PM (#3308164)
Where's Rick Peterson these days? He could fix Kazmir in ten minutes.

Wouldn't be surprised if it fell through; I presume the Rays are assuming some of Kazmir's remaining money. If the Angels had been willing to take the entire contract, one would think they'd have put a claim on him.
   35. bunyon Posted: August 29, 2009 at 12:06 AM (#3308169)
The Sox were concerned that Kazmir isn't healthy. They prefer to acquire more robust pitchers.

Perhaps whatever god is smiting Mets this year didn't get word of the Kazmir trade.

The Rays probably passed him through waivers at the start of the month, which was before his recent string of better performances and improved velocity. I could see the Angels seeing him as healthier now, and having interest that they didn't have 4 weeks ago.

With the amount of smiting the Mets have seen, you've got to assume it's the Big G God. A god (small g) couldn't cause half that damage.

The last para of Buster's piece reads in full: "Kazmir went to the Rays in a trade with the Mets for Victor Zambrano." Guess his Mets bait didn't work, as this thread has not yet self-immolated.

Yup, LAA press release confirms it: Angels acquire LHP Scott Kazmir from Tampa Bay

Since they are pretty much locked into the postseason, I guess their goal is to get Kazmir tuned up enough to be a #3-4 starter in a short series.
   43. Tripon Posted: August 29, 2009 at 03:10 AM (#3308384)
So the Red Sox, Rangers, Tigers, Twins, and White Sox all passed on the waiver claims?

4 games up with a month to play is not even close to a lock.

The monkey farts escaping the mouth of Mark Grace on the Angels broadcast confirmed this awhile ago, too. They're interviewing Reagins in the booth right now.

EDIT: Wait, I'm wrong on the baseball guy. It is the godawful Rex Hudler.

It'll be funny if this is how Brandon Wood finally leaves the Angels. To a team that doesn't need a short stop.

The Rays do not need a corner outfielder with no power, can't steal bases, and is already 28.

EDIT: Or, what #42 said hours ago.
   51. Johnny Tuttle Posted: August 29, 2009 at 11:35 AM (#3308478)
If this isn't the Rays seriously fearing further degradation to Kazmir's value (and they must really regret not dealing him at last year's winter meetings or something like that), then the economic disparities of the AL East are much worse than even I feared, and I'm the primate who gets hammered for using "Yankee$" and "Red $ox."

In fantasy this year, in a keeper, I've traded away Bedard, Dice, Volstad, Baker, and Volquez because I feared what would be coming next. (Sadly, I didn't or couldn't do the same with my beloved Johan, about whom I nearly make Gleeman look rational.) I wanted out before the bottom fell out. It would take some serious cajones for an MLB team to do the same with the potential for looking like a cheap Finley/Loria level ######### in the public's eye.
   52. Ivan Grushenko of Hong Kong Posted: August 29, 2009 at 12:24 PM (#3308484)
I'm guessing it's someone on the 40-man roster who would have to clear waivers. Rodriquez was rumored to be offered to Oakland for Wuertz. There's also Bell, O'Sullivan and Mathis...and of course Wood.
