South Side - NOTES FROM SABERSEMINAR 2017 FEATURING RICK HAHN

[Hahn] expressed a lot of skepticism about teams that are willing to put a single number valuation on a player (whether veteran or prospect), saying he thinks there’s too much uncertainty and too many different player profiles for him to take such ratings particularly seriously. He said it’s frustrating to hear in trade talks that “this player is worth $100 million and my prospect is worth $120 million, so there’s no way we’re doing this deal.”

There is plenty of uncertainty about how much value a player will actually provide for you. But if you are uncomfortable with a player's prospective value being reduced to a single number then you probably aren't the one who should be negotiating with Scott Boras.

True, it eventually has to come down to the single number of a salary (or the two numbers of years/salary) but I assume Hahn's points are (a) there are a lot of ways to get to that number; (b) a lot of ways a player will fail to get to that number; (c) some ways may be a better fit or a bigger risk for your team's specific needs/context. In Hahn's current context, he's possibly frustrated that he offers a very good player like Quintana then hears back -- yeah, but this prospect you're asking for is projected to provide you 12 WAR before the year 2026 and that's probably gonna be worth $120 M by then ... and him sitting on the phone thinking "maybe but I've got to wait 2-3 years before he starts doing anything, those 12 WAR are better known as 6 years of average play and that $120 M has enough uncertainly around it that the actual estimate is probably something like between $0 and $200 M so stop giving me grief when I'm offering you a player "worth" $100 M right now!"
