South Side Sox: Omar Vizquel’s free pass to your 2011 White Sox

“dull, conscientious, dependable, and loyal” Oh, wait…that was said about Omar Bradley not Vizquel.

I know Vizquel is a really nice guy.  I’m sure he’s awesome in the locker room.  I don’t doubt that he offers solid mentoring to the young players.  He definitely has the intangibles.  However, coaches can be in the locker room.  And they can also mentor.  Using an active roster spot on an intangibles player is a luxury for a team.  And, at some point, a sub-.500 team should realize they can’t afford luxuries that don’t clearly show up in the box score.  Those teams need production.

And Vizquel is simply not productive.  Pick your poison.  His triple slash is .252/.285/.303.  His OPS+ is 60.  His wOBA is .257.  So the offense is Rios-bad.  As for his defense, his FRAA is -3.2.  And if you don’t trust defensive statistics, focus your eyes.  He gets a pass from some because he makes plays look pretty.  Of course, the only plays he can actually make look pretty are those approximately five feet to either side of him.  That’s his “competence.” He simply cannot play shortstop anymore. He is a huge liability at third.  He’s a slightly less huge liability at second.

...Basically, you had management wearing blinders, refusing to change their preconceived notions of the players and their roles for the season, and you had entitled players refusing to give up those roles - all in the midst of some of the worst individual baseball performances in history.  That’s how obstinence sunk the 2011 White Sox.  And Omar Vizquel, miscast in the role of Competent Utility Infielder, was a small part of it.

Dang, just checked Vizquel's stats and saw that he is the 2nd oldest player in MLB. Just 3 guys left older than me - him and Wakefield and Stairs. Just two others born in the 60's left - Rivera and Rhodes (LOOGY's last forever).

Sigh. Just a year or two left at best for me :(

Stairs retired.

You old fart.

Isn't Moyer still thinking of coming back next year? That might make up for Stairs.

And Tony Phillips still plays in the independent minors.

Robbie Alomar was the first HoF player younger than me. Ouch.

To John in #1: Don't worry. As long as Tim Wakefield is stuck at 199 wins, there will always be at least one guy older than you playing in the majors.

For me, the disturbing trend is the free-agent drafting of grandsons of players I watched as a kid. Al Kaline's and Bill Freehan's grandsons were drafted this year. This is not right.

Thank God there are still a few players fatter than me.

Of all the problems do pick out for the 2011 White Sox.

Yeah, Vizquel is not hitting (60 OPS+) and is down to average as a fielder. The Sox could probably do better but there are lots of backup MIs like this around the league.

But surely the starting CF with the 55 OPS+, the starting DH with the 58 OPS+, the former starting 3B with the 63 OPS+, the former corner backup/3B (now traded) with the 58 OPS+, the (formerly?) starting 2B with the 69 OPS+ are of slightly more importance. Juan Pierre (84 OPS+) has looked like Jack Clark in that lineup for most of the season.

By the way, Beckham has .9 WAR with about half of that coming on Rroe.

Ken Griffey III is a senior in high school. He's going to play college football next year, but I wouldn't be surprised if a baseball team used a draft pick on him.

the former starting 3B with the 63 OPS+

Former? Including today, Morel has started 22 of their last 23 games at third.

Dunn is the guy losing playing time, today is the seventh time in the last 14 contests he has been in the starting lineup. And that's with Konerko unable to play the field and Quentin out entirely. Dunn might not get enough PA to set all those horrible records he's on pace for.

Of course "obstinence" is a word.

Might have trouble finding a dictionary that contains it, though.

Reminds me of one I've been noticing lately: people talking about "coming to an agreeance." Agreeance?

We've lost the "impactful" battle, but if I hear "agreeance" I'm getting wild.

Agreeance?

Agreeance is a real word. Archaic, but real. It's in the OED and everything.

It got a new lease on life when Fred Durst, of all people, used it in a speech at the 2003 Grammy awards.

For fun I checked the White Sox sOPS+ by position (OPS+ vs the league at that position).
CF: 65
3B: 65
2B: 75
LF: 83

DH is actually at 107 despite Dunn's DH sOPS+ of 68 over 249 PA.

The good thing for Williams is that the holes are pretty obvious. The bad thing is there are 2 disasters, 1 nightmare and 1 ugly slot mixed with a multiyear deal for their CF (signed through 2014) and DH (signed through 2014 as well) who can't hit.

Of all the problems do pick out for the 2011 White Sox.

The point of the article is to show how Vizquel's untouchable nature is representative of the poor team management this season. That releasing Vizquel, to free up space for the two guys hitting so well in AAA (De Aza and Viciedo), was never an option is telling.

Might just be a UK thing, but I don't even think it's that archaic. Although I don't think I've seen it used as 'coming to an agreeance', it's usually 'to be in agreeance about something'. As in 'everyone at BBTF is in agreeance that Jeff Francoeur sucks at baseball'.

I've heard it used practically all my life, and honestly never thought twice about it...
