Sox on Mariotti’s split: ‘It’s about time’

You knew this was coming.

Word of Jay Mariotti’s split with the Chicago Sun-Times reached the White Sox’ clubhouse minutes after their victory Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles, and the reaction could be heard outside.

...

Ozzie Guillen—the top target of the venom-spewing columnist who called for the Sox to fire their manager this season despite the team being in first place—said his e-mail inbox had a record number of new arrivals by Wednesday afternoon.

It was a steady stream of digital high-fives.

‘‘When people wish the worst on people, you have to be careful because the baseball gods are going to get you,’’ Guillen said. ‘‘He was not asking just for my job, he was asking for thousands and thousands of people’s jobs over the years. I’m not going to say I will get the last laugh because I will get fired from this job. But the day I get fired is the day I lose interest in this game.

‘‘Am I enjoying this? Yes, because he tried to make my life miserable. He did everything in his power to make my life go the wrong way, but he didn’t make me miserable because I don’t believe him. Maybe if somebody else wrote that stuff about me, then I would put attention on it. And that’s what he wanted. He wanted attention. He has to thank me because I gave him a lot of [stuff] to work with. I know I helped him the last four years to make his money, and, obviously, he did not help me at all to make my money.’‘

Also read the end, the official statement from a Sun-Times editor. By far the best put-down in the history of Newspaper Sportswriting.

Someone will hire him. He might have to take a pay cut to keep working, but he'll get a job writing or talking about sports for someone. He's a lazy hack, by all accounts a despicable human being, and his opinions have the weight of a gnat's ####, but he gets readers.

He's a lazy, hard-working hack, if that makes any sense. Not many columnists can match his output in terms of columns and inches.

Mariotti quit because he couldn't write a column on Obama. See - Obama's already making changes, being a force for good, uniting the nation, and making people feel better. If Barak Obama's existence can do this for the Chicago Sun Times, imagine what his presence in Washington can do for this country.
   105. Esoteric Posted: August 29, 2008 at 01:17 AM (#2921028)
Dag Nabbit, I have to admit, you've made the first argument in favor of Obama that's convinced me. If Obama can somehow engineer Plaschke's departure then I'm sold: Barack Obama truly is an agent for hope and change.

Its not enough to just get rid of the poor sports reporters and columnists- who should be promoted in their place?

Geoff Baker. He deserves it just for that "White Jays" article.

"Promoted"? Not sure what business is more imperiled than the newspaper business, where getting a job there would be a promotion. Maybe someone from UAL's in-flight magazine can take Mariotti's place.
   113. McCoy Posted: August 29, 2008 at 02:55 PM (#2921372)
Lincicome, the old Chicago Tribune version of Mariotti, should go as well. I believe he is out in Arizona somewhere and while we are at it they should take Skip with them.

Wow. I don't follow newsroom politics, so I didn't know how much of an ass this guy really was. Even Plaschke has at least one defender here (baudib, IIRC.) I guess one lesson here is if you're gonna be a terrible columnist, don't also be a terrible coworker too.
   115. Cooperstown Schtick Posted: August 29, 2008 at 03:02 PM (#2921375)
Also Woody Paige and Bob Ryan.

One objection to removing Bob Ryan. Please replace with Skip Bayless.
   116. Dr Love Posted: August 29, 2008 at 03:12 PM (#2921378)
Definitely add Bayless, yes, but Ryan has to go, at the least just stay in Boston and never appear on national TV or print. Mitch Albom can go as well.

GGC,

I never imagined I'd ever see something like this from a newspaper. It's one thing to celebrate a dickish co-worker's exit inside the office walls, but to share that joy with readers in print/online has got to be damn near unprecedented.

After I cancelled Tribune delivery I was often called to renew. I would ask is Lincicome still employed there? The response was always, "yes he is," and I would hang up. This went on for years. Turns out he had been long gone from the Trib, and if any of the phone solicitors had known that I probably would have had to resubscribe.

Was his departure this much fun?

By the way future VP Sarah Palin has been a sports reporter for two Anchorage television stations.

I believe that he must have had an offer on the table from someone else or he really is an idiot.

How lucky are the Cubs? They're going to the playoffs and the 2 biggest sports dopes in town - Mariotti and North - BOTH voluntarily quit their jobs.

Woah, when did North quit and why did he quit?

I moved away in February so I am out of the Chicago media loop but North's departure is good news.

No. Lincicome was just gone one day.

Woah, when did North quit and why did he quit?

He didn't quit. His contract was up, The Score offered him a lower salary - to go along with his lower ratings - and he refused. He played out the string and disappeared.
