Spokane Indians will be sporting Salish logo this year

How to genuinely honor a Native American nickname, by the Spokane Indians

Unlike sports teams under fire for using American Indian names and stereotypes, the Spokane Indians baseball team is closely allied with the Spokane Tribe of Indians. When the team unveiled a new logo in 2006, it included an alternate version with “Spokane Indians Baseball Club” written in Salish, the tribe’s native language.

Now they’re making those ties more visible — the Salish logo will be the one featured most prominently on the team’s home uniforms this coming season.

Good for them. I was always sad to see Salish never get a full healthy season with the Red Sox. But knowing that he's living on in the Indians' uniforms is heartwarming.

This is pretty cool. The PNW has a pretty interesting history with its Native population, since White settlers didn't come to the area in earnest until comparatively late in America's history, when some of the more barbaric methods of kicking the Natives off their land weren't as acceptable or necessary. There's a still a fairly vibrant Native culture, with a distinctive (and pretty cool) graphic visual style that still survives today. There are still plenty of problems in the community, but Native culture is stronger in the PNW than anywhere else I've lived. It really adds a lot to the character of the area.
