OTOH, I can't see him doing well with the personnel in Toronto.
Ricciardi is on a thin line.
can Joe Carter be far behind?
Thats 3 managers in a week?! Any precedent for this which does not include Big Stein the Furious?
This seems more of a Godfrey move than a Ricciardi move (which he probably only accepted to save his job).
I had no idea Gaston was still working for the Jays until today.
His basketball counterpart was Larry Bird with the Pacers. Had a good, smart team that had started to sour playing for a control freak in Larry Brown. Bird steps in, lets them play, and they go to two conference finals and the NBA Finals.
This actually seems like a reasonable interim hire in this case, even if it's probably being done as a call to past glory rather than a strategic decision.
Cito went 11 years between managing the Jays. Red Schoendienst went ten years between managing the Cards.
When I submitted the story there were basically no details as it was just broken, but the Jays have also fired the entire coaching staff aside from pitching coach Brad Arnsberg and replaced them with guys from the 93 World Series.
It seems like a novelty act type of move to appease the fans and I agree that it most likely came from Paul Godfrey.
I don't know your real name or where you live, but I will find you if you ever bring this up again.
Has Olerud learned to pull the ball yet?
Given the WS wins on his CV, he felt he shouldn't have to interview for a manager's post and that he should simply be offered a job outright. Such an offer never came.
Toronto fans, weary of winning World Championships, really turned on Cito in the end. He is very much a players' manager and when our players were no longer good it grew annoying to watch Cito stand behind them. He also seemed to leave pitchers in too long, which can be infuriating.
I don't fully understand why he never got another job. The White Sox almost hired him but went with Ozzie instead.
I suppose Ozzie is the only person I would rather have manage the Blue Jays. Our team is boring, we needed something interesting to happen.
They also kept Brian Butterfield.
Cito went 11 years between managing the Jays. Red Schoendienst went ten years between managing the Cards.
Yogi - 20 years.
Dude, I was just kidding. And oh, I'm from Quebec City, a eight hour drive north-east of Toronto.
Its kinda funny that despite being an abject disaster with the Raptors, running the Raptors is probably the best thing Isiah can put on his post-playing career resume.
That probably qualifies as hate speech. Be careful, Candadian law is not as tolerant of hate speech as the US.
That was a fun division race for a while. I remember one stretch where the Yankees went 2-10 on a west coast trip and gained ground when the Blue Jays had a nine game losing streak. Or am I remembering things.
He's too busy trying to buy the CFL and run it into the ground.
Can you source this? I've never heard it. He interviewed for the last vacant White Sox job and apparently came second to Guillen in the process.
Good one. I think Ryan Jones agrees with you...
No need for Thomas. The CFL is running itself into the ground...
Isn't that in, like, Canada? Adam Dunn isn't sure there is anything north of Toronto, but he really doesn't care all that much.
No. He was pretty mediocre as coach of the Pacers, which is a step up from all his other stops.
Ah yes. Steve Karsay went back to the A's in that deal I remember being excited about Karsay. Ah well.
Bruce Walton also appears to have avoided the axe. Other than Arnsberg's inability to turn Burnett into a consistent pitcher, Arnsberg and Walton appear to have done a good job of working with the pitching staff.
No, I can't. I recall him either saying just that or words to that effect being attributed to him (of course, I could be wrong). I don't know if he actually interviewed for the White Sox job or refused to interview for it, feeling he shouldn't have to.
SJH: The Long, Long Trailer
You're safe then. While I may be vengeful, I'm not eight-hour-drive vengeful.
Tell you what, if you're ever in the Toronto area, let me know.
As well as kick Shea Hillenbrand's ass!
You might say Gibbons was dumber than 10 gibbons?
is it Paul Wilson good?
What's the longest span of time between managerial stints with the same team?
Cito went 11 years between managing the Jays. Red Schoendienst went ten years between managing the Cards.
Billy Southworth went 11 years between the Cards gigs.
Bill Carrigan went 11 years between gigs with the Red Sox.
Roger Peckinpaugh went 8 years between hiring with the Indians.
In all cases, there were no other jobs in between as MLB manager.
That was a fun division race for a while.
quick--without looking--who won the AL West that year & who was their manager?
White Sox, but Lamont didn't spring to my mind for nearly a minute.
Damon was an inspired pick, as he wasn't considered to be good enough for where the Raptors drafted him, yet he went on to have one of the best careers of anyone from that draft. Of course, much like with Tinsley, it was also a matter of Isaiah wanting to have a point guard who reminded him of Isaiah.
Camby was picked exactly where he was expected to go, and underperformed in Toronto under Isaiah's guidance.
McGrady was also a good pick, and played capably while in Toronto, but also didn't really develop until after Isaiah left (not surprising, given that McGrady was 18.
Carter was drafted months after Isaiah left the organization, although that didn't stop Isaiah from claiming credit for the pick two years later.
Given the high picks of the Raptors, the only one which could really be considered an Isaiah pick which outperformed expectations (while on the Raptors) was Stoudamire.
I don't think Lamont springs to anyone's mind even after several hours
whatever happened to him, anyway?
Thomas put them in position to take Carter with all his losing.
WTF? Cito F'n Gaston?
What the hell has he been doing for the last 5 years anyways?
D'oh! Was that the year of Bo Jackson's Sox cameo?
Working with the Blue Jays. He's been helping out at spring training for years.
Didn't he have a pitching coach who looked 100% like him?
I also think Blue Jays Level of Excellence charter members George Bell and Dave Steib were on that team.
(checks)
Ding! Although Steib only made a brief appearance for them earlier in the season.
I hate this thread because it reminds me that Terry Bevington was allowed to manage the White Sox for multiple seasons in the 90s. I have tried to kill the braincells that hold that unpleasant memory.

they had a bunch of players that one associates with other teams: Steve Sax, Tim Raines, Ellis Burks
(they also had this little SS with a .292 OBP who provided veteran leadership)
Back surgery. Gene Tenace filled in as manager while Cito was out.
Maybe now they'll give Derek Bell the starting job.
Can't wait until he calls them the "California" Angels.
I don't know the exact chronology, but I think for a period since his last stint as Blue Jays manager, he worked for the Braves as a scout.
That may have had something to do with his sacking in 1997 - he was playing Otis Nixon, Orlando Merced, and Jacob Brumsfeld(!) rather than Green and Shannon Stewart.
Isn't he still sitting on the Tigers' bench, lighting cigarettes for Leyland?
Serious question.
Gaston would probably have given Rivera more 2 innings stints in the playoffs than Torre did, but yes, there are some similarities.
In 1997? I'd say that was a pretty onerous misallocation of resources. When was Stewart called up though?
In defense of Merced, at least he wasn't terrible (Nixon and Brusmfeld were)
Tendinitis--he's about three weeks away from returning.
Best Regards
John
