SportsNet: Jays fire Gibbons, hire Cito Gaston

John Gibbons’ tenure as Jays manager is over, and a familiar face is taking over the team.

The Jays fired Gibbons Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh, and Cito Gaston will take over the team full-time.

The last gasp of a flailing GM: trying to bring back the glory years with familiar faces…

WOW! Awesome! I love Cito and never understood why he never got another job. If you have a contending team and need a manager who doesn't tinker much and lets the vets go out and do the job, he's your man. A team like the Mets could do much worse than to hire a guy like Cito Gaston.

OTOH, I can't see him doing well with the personnel in Toronto.

I guess Gibbons didn't enjoy managing

They hired a bunch of the coaches from 1993, as well.

Ricciardi is on a thin line.

Darn, I submitted this too with a not too clever Edward Gibbons pun.

Thats 3 managers in a week?! Any precedent for this which does not include Big Stein the Furious?

If Gaston works his 1989 magic again, he's got Toronto sainthood wrapped up.

This seems more of a Godfrey move than a Ricciardi move (which he probably only accepted to save his job).

Everything old is new again, just like in the long long picture.

I had no idea Gaston was still working for the Jays until today.

His basketball counterpart was Larry Bird with the Pacers. Had a good, smart team that had started to sour playing for a control freak in Larry Brown. Bird steps in, lets them play, and they go to two conference finals and the NBA Finals.

This actually seems like a reasonable interim hire in this case, even if it's probably being done as a call to past glory rather than a strategic decision.

Toronto sports' fans might think they're back in the 1990s. Gaston with the (Blue) Jays, Cliff Fletcher with the Maple Leafs... When is Isiah Thomas coming back with the Raptors?

John Olerud has only been retired for a couple of years, he could probably be talked back.

What's the longest span of time between managerial stints with the same team?

Cito went 11 years between managing the Jays. Red Schoendienst went ten years between managing the Cards.
   20. Shock Posted: June 20, 2008 at 06:23 PM (#2827195)
I think it's pretty funny that after not managing for 11 years, Gaston now has to jump into InterLeague play where he'll have to think about double-switching and the like. Not that he can't handle it, of course.

When I submitted the story there were basically no details as it was just broken, but the Jays have also fired the entire coaching staff aside from pitching coach Brad Arnsberg and replaced them with guys from the 93 World Series.

It seems like a novelty act type of move to appease the fans and I agree that it most likely came from Paul Godfrey.

Given the WS wins on his CV, he felt he shouldn't have to interview for a manager's post and that he should simply be offered a job outright. Such an offer never came.

I can honestly say I have been suggesting this for weeks. Kudos to me - I think I'll buy myself a coke.

Toronto fans, weary of winning World Championships, really turned on Cito in the end. He is very much a players' manager and when our players were no longer good it grew annoying to watch Cito stand behind them. He also seemed to leave pitchers in too long, which can be infuriating.

I don't fully understand why he never got another job. The White Sox almost hired him but went with Ozzie instead.

I suppose Ozzie is the only person I would rather have manage the Blue Jays. Our team is boring, we needed something interesting to happen.

The only clear memories I have of Gaston are 1) the WS victories, of course, and 2) he hated hated hated Shawn Green for some reason. Maybe I'm "misremembering" the second point, but for some reason that stands out in my mind.

That was a fun division race for a while. I remember one stretch where the Yankees went 2-10 on a west coast trip and gained ground when the Blue Jays had a nine game losing streak. Or am I remembering things.

The Yankees almost kept getting into the race in '93, but could never quite do it. Was that the summer that the Jays traded for Cone and Kent? I remember hearing about that, and thinking that the Yankees just weren't good enough to catch a team with those players.

That was also the year there was a mini-controversey when the Jays came to Yankee Stadium and a bunch of idiots booed "O, Canada." I went to one of those games, and even at age 9 I remember thinking "The players aren't Canadian, why do you think this will bother them?"

I think I am now conflating two memories. Sources suggest that he did indeed interview for the White Sox job in 2003. I think his "shouldn't have to interview" posture was assumed immediately upon the end of his stint with the Jays, a position he seemingly jettisoned in subsequent years.

I think he didn't get another job because he was too passive. Play the exact same starters every day; don't make mid-game substitutions, don't bunt. Just trust your talent to win and don't get in the way. My hunch is that execs thought he took those tendencies too far, moving from minimalist to passive non-existance. He was the index fund of managers, and teams wanted someone who could make things happen.

What's the longest span of time between managerial stints with the same team?

Cito went 11 years between managing the Jays. Red Schoendienst went ten years between managing the Cards.

Billy Southworth went 11 years between the Cards gigs.

Bill Carrigan went 11 years between gigs with the Red Sox.

Roger Peckinpaugh went 8 years between hiring with the Indians.

In all cases, there were no other jobs in between as MLB manager.

I know he picked Damon Stoudamire and Marcus Camby? Not sure about his tenure, but they also picked up Tracy McGrady and Antawn Jamison (traded for Vince Carter).

Damon was an inspired pick, as he wasn't considered to be good enough for where the Raptors drafted him, yet he went on to have one of the best careers of anyone from that draft. Of course, much like with Tinsley, it was also a matter of Isaiah wanting to have a point guard who reminded him of Isaiah.

Camby was picked exactly where he was expected to go, and underperformed in Toronto under Isaiah's guidance.

McGrady was also a good pick, and played capably while in Toronto, but also didn't really develop until after Isaiah left (not surprising, given that McGrady was 18.

Carter was drafted months after Isaiah left the organization, although that didn't stop Isaiah from claiming credit for the pick two years later.

Given the high picks of the Raptors, the only one which could really be considered an Isaiah pick which outperformed expectations (while on the Raptors) was Stoudamire.
   69. Steibferno Posted: June 20, 2008 at 07:06 PM (#2827323)
Well, I think it is fair to say that a large part of Cito not getting another job was his race. How many managers win two world series, and yet can't get another job for ten years? I'm not saying it is the only reason, but I do believe it played a major factor.

After Schueler canned Lamont in 95 to promote the horrific Terry Bevington, Lamont went back to coach third for Jim Leyland in Pittsburgh. Lamont then succeeded Leyland as manager there, and now he coaches third for Leyland in Detroit. As long as Leyland is working, Lamont will have a job.

I hate this thread because it reminds me that Terry Bevington was allowed to manage the White Sox for multiple seasons in the 90s. I have tried to kill the braincells that hold that unpleasant memory.

I remember the 1993 ALCS as the year they didn't give Frank Thomas anything to hit: 27 PA, 10 BB. And the crowd's desperate cries of "Bo! Bo!" as 0-10 Bo Jackson milled around with a bat in the 9th, waiting for that second runner who never would get on base.

Question about Cito Gaston: I notice on his baseball-reference manager's page that he only managed 129 games in 1991. What happened there? Was he ill for a time, or what?

Back surgery. Gene Tenace filled in as manager while Cito was out.

Rumour is Gaston's back to "finish what he started", and this is an elaborate way of ending Shannon Stewart's career as a regular starter.

Maybe now they'll give Derek Bell the starting job.

I don't guess that Cito will be exposed to the possibility of a Wild Card this year.

Can't wait until he calls them the "California" Angels.

Edit: accidental repeat of comment.

During the press conference taking place now, Cito said he had done a lot of interviews to manage but never got the job. The last time he had an opportunity to interview was a couple of years ago with the Dodgers and he elected not to go, fearing it would be the same result. He felt he didn't want to waste anyone's time by going through the interview process. Cito then said at the press conference that he would then only manage again if he didn't have to interview for it.

Edit: Sorry, don't know what's going on. Now I just feel like quite the fool.

Do the Blue Jays really have a "Level of Excellence"? That is sooo Canadian.

What the hell has [Gaston] been doing for the last 5 years anyways?

I don't know the exact chronology, but I think for a period since his last stint as Blue Jays manager, he worked for the Braves as a scout.

The only clear memories I have of Gaston are 1) the WS victories, of course, and 2) he hated hated hated Shawn Green for some reason. Maybe I'm "misremembering" the second point, but for some reason that stands out in my mind.

That may have had something to do with his sacking in 1997 - he was playing Otis Nixon, Orlando Merced, and Jacob Brumsfeld(!) rather than Green and Shannon Stewart.

I don't think Lamont springs to anyone's mind even after several hours

whatever happened to him, anyway?

Isn't he still sitting on the Tigers' bench, lighting cigarettes for Leyland?

I expect this to bring the same results that the Senators had when they brought back Bucky Harris, the Orioles when they brought back Earl Weaver and the Redskins when they brought back Joe Gibbs.

Is Cito Gaston the black Joe Torre or is Joe Torre the Italian Cito Gaston?

Serious question.

The Italian Gaston just doesn't sound right.

Gaston would probably have given Rivera more 2 innings stints in the playoffs than Torre did, but yes, there are some similarities.

In 1997? I'd say that was a pretty onerous misallocation of resources. When was Stewart called up though?
In defense of Merced, at least he wasn't terrible (Nixon and Brusmfeld were)

Wow! Maybe they'll sign up Duane Ward to pitch the 8th inning too?

Tendinitis--he's about three weeks away from returning.

Best Regards

John
