AP: Sheets leaves after 5 innings with tightness in triceps

Milwaukee’s Ben Sheets left the game against the Cincinnati Reds after only five innings Friday night because of tightness in his right triceps. Sheets allowed two singles in five innings, leaving with the Brewers ahead 5-0.
...
He left the game for a pinch-hitter after only 60 pitches, 39 of them strikes.

In four starts, Sheets has allowed only three earned runs in 28 innings.

After he was pinch-hit for, but before the injury was announced, Sheets was just sitting there watching the game in the dugout, looking rather unconcerned, which seemed weird.

He didn't seem to be hurting, before he was pinch-hit for. He carved up Votto in 3-4 pitches to end his last inning, and that was that.

Maybe he wanted to see his sub-1.00 ERA in the paper tomorrow morning, and didn't want to risk giving up a run :P
They certainly weren't hustling him back to run tests or anything.

I got Ben Sheets for $15 in my NL only keeper league, and so far he's been an absolutely bargain (also got Derek Lowe for $9 and Edinson Volquez for $6... and Brandon Webb for $35, but I'm a homer that way). Here's hoping this is nothing serious and Ben can make his next start.

I know we're all used to expecting the worst from any Sheets affliction, but this sounds like the classic Zambrano situation where he just can't pitch the rest of the night due to cramping or what-not and will be fine next time out.

FSN WI is reporting that Sheets told them, after the game, he started feeling the stiffness after his last start, but wanted to try and pitch tonight, and last about 90 pitches or six innings.

He looked great tonight for a guy with an arm w/ some stiffness.

Yost said in his post-game that he pulled him out of the game because it's April, and he didn't want to push things.

tightness in right triceps. This guy aggravates/injures muscles, bones and body parts that have never been associated with pitchers.

Torn tendon in his finger
Groin strain
Hamstring strain
Sore chest muscle
Shoulder tendinitis

It's an odd list, and I believe he's now covered all the major regions of the body in the last few seasons alone.

“He could have continued easy, but this is not a time to take a chance,” Yost said. “He was throwing good, but I’m not going to take any chance with Ben Sheets in April. I’m not doing it.”

I don't even remember the "chest soreness"; how bad is that?

Jokes about what is going to ail Sheets next always remind me of the BTF 2006 Twins preview:

In 2006, look for Morneau to have fewer obscene conversations with both himself and the home plate umpire in the middle of at bats, fewer fights in the clubhouse with supposed team leaders, fewer 19th century diseases, fewer articles written explaining that the team was better with Doug Mientkiewicz.

It's beginning to occur to me that building my fantasy league pitching staff around Ben Sheets, Pedro Martinez and Francisco Liriano, with C.C. Sabathia as my anchor, was a bad idea. I should be in good shape when Mark Prior gets back though.
