SportsTicker: Rangers DH Sosa leaves game after getting beaned

Sammy Sosa was helped off the field after getting hit in the head by a pitch Saturday night.

With the Texas Rangers leading 5-0, Sosa was leading off the top of the third inning when the second pitch from Cleveland Indians starter Cliff Lee skimmed off Sosa’s shoulder and hit him flush on the left side of the head. The veteran slugger dropped to the ground and stayed down on one knee for about two minutes before walking off under his own power.
...
There is no word yet as to his condition or if he will miss any further action. The beaning appeared to be accidental, and no Rangers made any move to charge the mound.
...
Sosa had been honored with an elaborate ceremony prior to the game by the Rangers for recently hitting his 600th career home run, and had a large contingent of family and friends in attendance. Included among the dignitaries in attendance were actor Vin Diesel, who is a good friend of Sosa…

That's a pretty big target.

I hope he's OK.

Another ball to the head?

I hope the helmet stayed intact this time.

Salomon Torres's career was revitalized after he hit Sosa in the head in 2003. We'll see if Cliff Lee has similar good fortune.

Let me guess, he was diving over the plate?

It seems this late in his career he's guessing at pitches and diving over the plate and putting his noggin in harm's way, or completely uneffective.

So ... he was helped off the field while walking off under his own power.

Considering Sammy's infamous unfamiliarity with English, shouldn't the headline read frijole'd?

Sosa wasn't crowding the plate; Lee's command was dreadful. He and Victor Martinez were visible angry with each other that inning -- not quite a Zambrano/Barrett moment, but Martinez was furious with him. The beaning may have settled Lee down as when he came back in the next inning.
