SportsTicker: Reds release RHP Paul Wilson

Attempting a comeback from rotator cuff surgery, righthander Paul Wilson was released by the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.

Wilson, 33, struggled in five spring training appearances, allowing 12 earned runs and 22 hits in 13 1/3 innings.
...
[In 2005], he struggled with discomfort in his shoulder, compiling a 1-5 record with a 7.77 ERA in nine starts before undergoing surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and frayed labrum.

Wilson missed the entire 2006 season as well and had to settle for a minor league contract with the Reds in January.

The top overall pick in the 1994 draft after leading Florida State to the College World Series, Wilson compiled a 40-58 record with a 4.86 ERA in 170 career games with the New York Mets, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Reds.

He's still funnier than Luke Wilson.

No brainer. What's Bill Pulsipher doing these days?

Next step: 2/$3M from Jim Hendry.

I'll always fondly remember him for his brilliant pitching in the second half of '01. Between that, a similarly outstanding late stretch by Steve Traschel (yea, Steve Traschel) and good work from Brian Lawerence, Roy Hallyday, and a fifth guy (maybe Adam Eaton or perhaps Joel Piniero) my fantasy baseball team had a really solid starting staff made up entirely of waiver wire picks. I even renamed my team the Waiver Wire Potluck in their honor.

Nationals' #2 starter?

Wow, Wilson had four consecutive years having a 92 ERA+. That's consistent, anyway.

At least he made $13+ million.
