SportTicker: Angels RHP [Francisco] Rodriguez matches single-season save record

Francisco Rodriguez tied the single-season major league record with his 57th save of the season as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim downed the Seattle Mariners, 7-4, on Thursday.

Rodriguez matched Bobby Thigpen’s major league record of 57 saves, set in 1990 while he was with the Chicago White Sox.
...
“It finally feels like all my hard work has paid off,” Rodriguez said. “It would be very selfish for me to say it was just me, but it’s all about the teammates.”

Mark down where you were, so we can remember this day. Nothing else will be remembered.

He's certainly helping my fantasy team stay in the pennant race, for sure.

That's cute.

I suppose for last night he'd especially like to thank his teammates Justin Speier and Scot Shields for turning an easy win into a save situation.

I might care about this if I still played fantasy baseball.

That's why the first thing he does after every save is make a self-effacing gesture to his teammates, and then run up and hug them.

I'll remember this race for years. I look forward to 50 years from now when I can tell my grandkids about that magical day when I saw the immortal Bobby Thigpen finally matched.

Meanwhile, Kyle McClellan remains stuck on 30 holds. Scott Linebrink and Tom Gordon can rest easy another year.

I respectfully disagree. It was on that day in 1985 when Pete Rose broke the hits record.

And it's also Ellis Burks' birthday.

I can't look it up right now. How many holds (and in what year) did Linebrink/Gordon have in their immortal seasons?

And are these the type of holds a pitcher can get w/o getting anybody out?

36, Gordon in '04, Linebrink '06. These are all holds in which someone was retired. See this thread for lots of exciting holds discussion!

If a tree falls in the forest, and the forest isn't on the east coast, does it make a sound?

I'm waiting for the Larry King article advocating that Rodriguez sit out the rest of the season as a way to honor that all-time great player Bobby Thigpen.

He's honoring his late grandfather. And then he does immediately start high-fiving/hugging his teammates. Every teammate last night got a hug, in fact.
