SportTicker: Cubs place RHP Fox on 15-day DL

Following on the Mulder story, speaking of the perpetually injured…

Following Monday’s 7-2 win over the Houston Astros, the Chicago Cubs placed righthander Chad Fox on the 15-day disabled list with ulnar neuritis in his right arm.

Fox, who is is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three relief appearances this season, injured his arm during pregrame [sic] warmups.

To fill his place on the roster, the Cubs recalled righthander Jose Ascanio from Class AAA Iowa. The 23-year-old was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 17 appearances for Iowa with 23 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.

I was shocked Chad came back this year, he talked pretty absolutely about it being the end after Dusty murdered him on the mound in '05. I wouldn't be shocked if he hung it up rather than going through this again, even if it's something minor.

It made for a nice story and all, and it may sound cold, but this team is better off with him on the DL.

Well, this explains why he didn't pitch today.

Cubs also put Rich Hill on the AAA DL. In the article (sorry, blog post), Lou says he thinks Rich has more mental problems than physical. There's a lot of speculation in that article (blog post), for those of you who tend to overreact (you know who you are), I'd advise against you reading that.

Too late Moses. I just don't understand why managers feel the need to bring up perceived mental problems to the press. How is that supposed to help a supposed mentally fragile person by exposing these problems to the world?

What should he say? If he's not hurt, he's probably getting asked for a reason. I don't think he's saying he has mental problems, but he is saying that for him to get back to where he was last year he needs to get his head straightened out.

That wasn't what I was referring to though. Maybe I'm the only one here who thinks Marshall in the rotation again is a terrible idea. I'd rather see Hart get a chance before him (and ideal Hill and Gallagher are ahead of him in the pecking order).

Can't we all agree to blame this on Paul Sullivan, Blogger?

Also, I'm looking forward to seeing whether Ascanio can translate success to the bigs.

Where's Soriano?

Not shabby.

Are you serious - look again. Only two guys had a higher OPS than their ace pitcher.

I was pretty surprised to see Fox was back in the bigs when I turned on a Cubs-Cards game a few weeks ago. Kinda cool he came out of retirement and decided he still had something left in the tank, but this was pretty inevitable wasn't it?

Don't forget Fukudome on the dreck list - it was the entire Cubs lineup apart from Lee and Ramirez (with Soriano hurt, so he's exempt).

Kosuke Fukudome: .306/.397/.403

CHAD Fox? THAT Chad Fox??
   13. SouthSideRyan Posted: May 20, 2008 at 07:48 PM (#2788037)
I expect Fox to sit on the DL until it's time for a rehab stint that will coincidentally end around September 1st.

Re: Hill, why can't Lou stick with the reason they say they're putting him on the DL, that being back pain?
