AP: Giants deal Morris, big contract to Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates got pitcher Matt Morris from San Francisco on Tuesday, an uncommon deal for an out-of-contention team at the trading deadline. Pittsburgh sent rookie outfielder Rajai Davis and a player to be named to the Giants.
...
Morris, who will be 33 next week, is a former 22-game winner for St. Louis who is 7-7 with a 4.35 ERA this season…

“It is what it is,” Morris said in a phone interview from the Giants’ hotel in Los Angeles. “I’m just moving on. It’s just a shock. You hear rumors. I never heard Pittsburgh.”

The Giants were looking for a team to take some of their high-salaried players, and the Pirates will pick up all of the remainder of Morris’ $10,037,283 contract for this season.

“Almost at the 11th hour we were talking to two other teams I would consider competitors in the playoff situation,” Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. “As it turns out, Pittsburgh stepped up not only to take the player as is, with the contract.”

Really?
My god- they went outside the organization and got HIM???

Director of Player development in Montreal late 90s? (gee that explains a lot)
assistant GM in Florida 99-01???

Trying to assemble the 1997-98 Expos drafts... I could be wrong- but aside from Wilkerson it looks like bust city

You think that's fun? Check out the record of our Director of Scouting, Ed Creech.

So did Creech answer to DL in 1997? I assume Director of Plyer development is above Scouting director (I could be wrong...)

It's hard to tell with these guys

In LA it looks like Logan White has his own budget and does whatever he wants- he drafts and he negotiates

In Oakland (judging by MoneyBall), Beane as GM calls all the shots on that.

I dont know what really goes on in Pitt, but Koskos seems to have been DL's call all the way...
