SportTicker: Keppinger suffers fractured patella

Cincinnati Reds shortstop Jeff Keppinger suffered a fractured patella in his right knee on a foul ball in the second inning in Tuesday night’s game against the Florida Marlins.

Keppinger underwent an X-ray which revealed the fracture. He will undergo more extensive MRI tests on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Keppinger - who was leading the Reds in hits, batting average and RBI - was in the midst of a breakout season, was hitting .324 with three homers and 21 RBI.

That hurts, just reading about it. Best of luck for a speedy recovery, Kepp.

It's a bad year to be the kneecap of a Reds shortstop; Keppinger got the job because Alex Gonzalez had a broken kneecap, too, IIRC.

Before the injury, how was Keppinger's defense at short?

Last or near-to-last in RZR, OOZ, and DPs per THT.

Keppinger ran the bases, then played 2 innings of defense on a broken knee. What does Dusty think he is a pitcher?

Jolbert Cabrera, come on down! Or will it be Jerry Gil? Gil's not hitting but Cabrera hasn't played any SS this season.

Any chance of Hairston getting first look at short?

This guy has had a lot of bad luck in his career. In 2005, the Mets were just about ready to give Keppinger a chance to take over 2b from an ineffective Kaz Matsui, and he hurt his knee.

I believe Hairston's the only SS on the 25 man roster. Paul Janish(exactly.) is the only other SS on a full 40 man roster.

Ah, for chrissakes. My options on the free agent list now are Rich Aurilia, Christian Guzman and JJ Hardy. Yuck.

Any chance Andy Green gets a callup? I'm rooting for him.

Kep's going to come back strong. He doesn't even need legs to hit .320.

"JJ Hardy"

What the hell are you complaining about?

Have you looked at his stats lately? I need a SS who can hit, not a roster filler.

I blame Lassus.

Nah, just making sure of a roster spot for Neifi

Hey, I had Tulo to open the year and then had to make an emergency trade when he went down with the quad injury. I will leave it as an exercise for the reader to guess who I traded for as his replacement.

Well.
If you're looking for a guy with good recent stats Guzman's your man.
Don't look now sportsfans but Guzman has a 112ish OPS+ his last 350 or so plate apps.
328/380/466 last year in 189 PAs and 303/322/448 this year in 170 PA.

He can hit. He just hasn't done much of it lately.
